Country: United States. Style: Soul.
Lineup: Mavis Staples (v), Donny Gerrard (v), Vicki Randle (v/shaker/tambourine), Rick Holmstrom (g), Jeff Turmes (bass g), Stephen Hodges (d).
I took photos of Mavis Staples at Union Chapel in 2014 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157645936028804/). The band was the same then, apart from also it including Mavis' sister Yvonne who died in April 2018.

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: Funk.
Lineup: Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), Raymond Williams (trumpet), Calvin Johnson (tenor sax), Kyle Roussel (keyboards), Hiro Manu (g), Kevin O'Day (d) and guests: Harold "Homeboy" Wilson (congas/bongos/shaker), Ebria Kieffer (snare d), unknown (bones), Dat Boi Cue [Cuentin Stewart] (v).
Kirk Joseph was born in the 7th Ward and is best known as a founder member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which rejoined in 2010. He formed Backyard Groove in 2004. Other photos I’ve taken of these musicians are of Joseph with the Forgotten Souls (2011) and the Dirty Dozen (2012); Williams with the Hot 8 (2012); Johnson with Baritone Bliss (2011; Roussel with the Dirty Dozen (2012) and Keiffer with the Mahogany (2011). French Quarter Festival, www.fqfi.org/.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: R and B.
Lineup: Probably Joe Krown (organ), Brent Rose (tenor sax), Brian "Breeze" Cayolle (tenor sax/baritone sax), Brint Anderson (g), Jim Markway (bass g), Mike Barras (d).
From Long Island, New York, Joe Krown moved to New Orleans in 1992. Between then and 2005 he was part of Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown’s backing band. This was the Joe Krown Organ Combo, based around his Hammond B3 playing (he also plays piano) and formed in 1999.

Most of my pre-digital camera photos are of dubious quality (probably more down to the original photo than the digitising process), but I hope they are still worth uploading.
7th May 2011 at the Fair Grounds Race Course (Jazz & Heritage Stage), New Orleans, USA.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Lineup includes: Cayetano "Tanio" Hingle (bass d), William Smith (trumpet/v), Kenny Terry (trumpet), Marlon Jordan (trumpet), Corey Henry (trombone), Reginald Stewart (trombone), Byron Bernard (tenor sax), Jeffrey Hills (sousaphone), [probably] Arian Macklin (sousaphone), Kerry "Fatman" Hunter (snare d), Louis Lederman (percussion).
If anyone can confirm whether I’ve correctly identified the lineup, I would be most grateful.
The New Birth Brass Band was formed in 1987 from musicians from the 6th and 7th Wards who had played in the Junior Olympia (Tanio Hingle - the band’s leader, Kerry Hunter, Kenny Terry) and the All Stars. Whilst open to the modern Brass Band influences of funk, hip hop, etc., it has always kept more of a traditional Brass Band sound than most of the bands which appeared then and since.
This was an expanded lineup for Jazzfest which brought together a number of former members of Rebirth (Stewart, Bernard) (plus a current one in Henry) and of the Treme (Hills, Macklin).

18th July 2012 at Under the Bridge, London SW6.
Country: United States: New Orleans. Style: R and B.
Lineup: "Dr John" (Mac Rebennack) (v/p/organ/g/percussion), Jon Cleary (p/keyboard/g/percussion/v), John Fohl (g), David Barard (bass g), Raymond Weber (d), Derek Huston (baritone sax), Sarah Morrow (trombone).
Mac Rebennack grew up in the Third Ward. After playing on numerous New Orleans R&B recordings, he made his commercial breakthrough in 1968 as Dr John, the Night Tripper. In recent years he has mostly reverted to a more traditional style R & B. The band included long time colleague David Barard, with Raymond Weber (until recently of Dumpstaphunk) replacing the late Roscoe Ernest. John Fohl has been around for a few years since he replaced Bobby Broom. For this European tour Jon Cleary (who leads his own band and performs with Bonnie Raitt), Derek Huston (once of the Iguanas) and Sarah Morrow (once of the Ray Charles band) made up the Lower 911.

28th March 2013 at Islington Assembly Hall, London N1.
Country: Britain. Style: R and B.
Line Up: James Hunter (v/g), Lee Badau (baritone sax), Damian Hand (tenor sax), Kyle Koehler (keyboards), Jason Wilson (b), Jonathan Lee (d).
James Hunter from Colchester, Essex, now aged 50, has been performing a blend of 50s/60s R and B/Soul since the 1980s (originally under the name Howlin’ Wilf). His breakthrough, particularly in the USA, came with his 2006 album “People Gonna Talk”. I never saw him as Howlin’ Wilf. My first view of him live was in 1997 at the Weavers, and the last (before this gig) in 2006 at Bush Hall. With the exception of American organist Kyle Koehler, the members of the band have played with James Hunter for many years.

19th June 2015 at The Scoop, London SE1.
Part of More London Free Festival (annual event).
Country: Britain. Style: R and B & Rock'n'Roll & Blues & Country.
Line Up: Kitty Durham (v/g/harmonica/tenor banjo), Daisy Durham (v/keyboard//tambourine/d), Lewis Durham (v/g/keyboard/d), Graeme Durham (g/tambourine/coconut), Ingrid Weiss (bass g/b) and guest: Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton (trumpet).
The three Durham siblings from Kentish Town formed this band in 2001 when Daisy and Lewis were in their early teens and Kitty younger. While sometimes described as a Rockabilly or Rock'n'Roll band, their music covers a wide spectrum of American Roots styles. As always when playing live they were joined by their father (who is Anglo-Indian from Bombay) and mother (of part Swedish descent), and (for most of the last decade) Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton.

3rd November 2012 at Islington Assembly Hall, London N1.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Line Up: Gregory Davis (trumpet/flugelhorn/v), Efrem Towns (trumpet/flugelhorn/v), Kevin Harris (tenor sax), Roger Lewis (baritone sax), Kyle Roussel (keyboards), Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), Terence Higgins (d) and guest: Pete Thomas (tenor sax).
This gig was part of the Dirty Dozen’s 35th anniversary tour. The band was formed when a group of young musicians, several of whom had come through the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band and then the Hurricane and Tornado bands, linked up with Benny Jones who was part of the Social and Pleasure Club scene in Treme. They became the premier Brass Band in the city, making a number of innovations to the format: in 1994 replacing the separate Snare and Brass Drummers with someone playing a Drum Kit, later adding Keyboards or Guitar (for a while they even dropped the Brass Band part of their name). Davis, Townes, Harris and Lewis have been members for the entire journey (though Davis hasn’t toured much outside the New Orleans area in recent years). Higgins has been in the band since 1994. Kirk Joseph left in 1991 and has rejoined for the anniversary celebrations. Roussel (of the Glen David Andrews Band) is new to the Dirty Dozen (the last Keyboard player was Richard Knox). I’ve taken photos of some of these musicians with other Brass Bands - Townes and Joseph with the Forgotten Souls (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626762648868/) and Lewis with the Treme (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626842194353/).

6th May 2011 in the 12 Bar, New Orleans, USA.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: R and B.
Lineup: Henry Butler (v/p), Vasti Jackson (g), Doug Wimbush (bass g), Shannon Powell (d), Howard "Smiley" Ricks (congas).
Henry Butler was born in New Orleans in 1949, and displaced to Colorado by Katrina. He has played the piano since he was 6, and is classically trained (with a Masters degree in Vocal music). He has played Jazz (recording with Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins and Jack DeJohnette), and was in a Blued duo with Corey Harris. In recent years he has focused on R and B in the Professor Longhair tradition (though I did see him playing Jazz at the Snug Harbor in 2007). Vasti Jackson (from Mississippi) has primarily performed as a Blues artist. Doug Wimbush (from Connecticut) was in Living Color and performed with various Rock “legends”. Shannon Powell (from Treme) plays in a variety of Jazz styles, mostly Traditional. Smiley Ricks is a Mardi Gras Indian Chief who has played with Dr John, Donald Harrison Jr and the New Orleans Nightcrawlers (who was displaced to Nashville by Katrina).

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Lineup: Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), William Smith (trumpet), Efrem Towns (trumpet), Charles Joseph (trombone), Roderick Paulin (alto sax), Eric Traub (tenor sax), Keith Frazier (bass drum), Ajay Mallory (snare drum), Henry Petras (tambourine).
The Forgotten Souls Brass Band (it now seem to have been dropped the last part of the name) was formed around 2000 by Kirk Joseph. who had left the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In just a few years it released no less than four albums (produced by Henry Petras on stage here playing tambourine). These days it only seems to come together for the French Quarter Festival and Jazzfest. This is because the membership is drawn from other brass bands and, therefore, busy elsewhere. This time the lineup consisted of Kirk’s bother Charles Joseph (ex Treme and Dirty Dozen), Efrem Towns (Dirty Dozen), William Smith (New Birth), Roderick Paulin (Paulin Brothers and ex-Rebirth), Eric Traub (sometime New Orleans Nightcrawlers), Keith Frazier (Rebirth) and Ajay Mallory (101ers and ex-Rebirth). The Forgotten Souls were joined on stage by a member of the Uptown Bone Gang, playing a similar role to a Grand Marshall. Bone Gangs are a Mardi Gras Parade formation like the Indians.

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Lineup: Walter Ramsey (trombone/sousaphone), Chris Cotton (trumpet), Eric Gordon Jr (trumpet), Glenn Preston (trumpet), Ersel Bogan (trombone), Alfred Grove (trombone). Virgil Tiller (tenor sax), Clifton Smith (sousaphone), Frank Norris (bass d), Antoine Coleman (snare d), John Dotson (percussion).
Originally the Lil’ Stooges Brass Band (after comic characters) and briefly JumpShive (to avoid confusion with the Rock band), the group came together in 1996. They were founded by students at two High Schools, John F. Kennedy and St Augustine’s. Leader Walter Ramsey’s grandfather, Ashton, was part of the Dirty Dozen Kazoo Band which preceded the Brass Band of the same name. There has been a substantial turnover of musicians - Troy Andrews, Sam Williams, Andrew Baham and Ellis Joseph are amongst those who have passed through. The Stooges are one of the groups which take Brass Band music furthest in the direction towards Hip Hop.
