This led to the formation of the Neville Brothers. From time to time Aaron performs as a solo artist, notably in an annual appearance at the Gospel Tent at Jazzfest. 10th July 2013 at the Village Underground, London EC2.

Country: United States. Style: R and B.

Line Up: Shuggie [Johnny Alexander II] Otis (v/g), Eric Otis (g), Michael Turre (baritone sax/flute/piccolo), Albert Quon Wing (tenor sax), Larry Douglas (trumpet), Russell "Swang" Stewart (keyboards), Lucky [Johnny III] Otis (bass g), Nick Otis (d), Jon Otis (percussion).

Shuggie Otis in the son of 1940s-70s R and B bandleader Johnny Otis (real name Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes). This father was a Greek American and his mother African American/Filipino. His nickname - a variant of Sugar - was given coined by his mother at an early age. Born in Los Angeles, CA, Shuggie performed with his father’s band from when he was 12. At 15 he made his name with the Supersession Vol II album with Al Kooper. Then in the 70s he made a series of what would much later became cult albums. Dropped by his label he disappeared from view, apart from an unsuccessful comeback in 2001 and this one, which started in 2012. Given his own start it is not surprising to find his backing band - Shuggy Otis Rite - full of relatives: two brothers (Jon and Nick), two sons (Lucky and Eric) and a cousin (Swang).

6th May 2011 at the Fair Grounds Race Course (Jazz & Heritage Stage), New Orleans, USA.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.

Lineup: Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), William Smith (trumpet), Efrem Towns (trumpet), Charles Joseph (trombone), Roderick Paulin (alto sax), Eric Traub (tenor sax), Keith Frazier (bass drum), Ajay Mallory (snare drum), Henry Petras (tambourine).

The Forgotten Souls Brass Band (it now seem to have been dropped the last part of the name) was formed around 2000 by Kirk Joseph. who had left the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In just a few years it released no less than four albums (produced by Henry Petras on stage here playing tambourine). These days it only seems to come together for the French Quarter Festival and Jazzfest. This is because the membership is drawn from other brass bands and, therefore, busy elsewhere. This time the lineup consisted of Kirk’s bother Charles Joseph (ex Treme and Dirty Dozen), Efrem Towns (Dirty Dozen), William Smith (New Birth), Roderick Paulin (Paulin Brothers and ex-Rebirth), Eric Traub (sometime New Orleans Nightcrawlers), Keith Frazier (Rebirth) and Ajay Mallory (101ers and ex-Rebirth). The Forgotten Souls were joined on stage by a member of the Uptown Bone Gang, playing a similar role to a Grand Marshall. Bone Gangs are a Mardi Gras Parade formation like the Indians.

6th May 2011 in the 12 Bar, New Orleans, USA.

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: R and B.

Lineup: Henry Butler (v/p), Vasti Jackson (g), Doug Wimbush (bass g), Shannon Powell (d), Howard "Smiley" Ricks (congas).

Henry Butler was born in New Orleans in 1949, and displaced to Colorado by Katrina. He has played the piano since he was 6, and is classically trained (with a Masters degree in Vocal music). He has played Jazz (recording with Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins and Jack DeJohnette), and was in a Blued duo with Corey Harris. In recent years he has focused on R and B in the Professor Longhair tradition (though I did see him playing Jazz at the Snug Harbor in 2007). Vasti Jackson (from Mississippi) has primarily performed as a Blues artist. Doug Wimbush (from Connecticut) was in Living Color and performed with various Rock “legends”. Shannon Powell (from Treme) plays in a variety of Jazz styles, mostly Traditional. Smiley Ricks is a Mardi Gras Indian Chief who has played with Dr John, Donald Harrison Jr and the New Orleans Nightcrawlers (who was displaced to Nashville by Katrina).

James Booker, along with Professor Longhair, is probably the most influential New Orleans R and B pianist.

Originally from Ohio, Tom McDermott has been in New Orleans since 1984. He plays in a variety of styles including Traditional Jazz and Choro.

Rebirth Brass Brand were formed in 1983 by students at the Joseph S. Clark Senior High School in Central City. They were strongly influenced by the new funkier style of Brass Band music introduced by the Dirty Dozen. Over the years there has been a high level of turnover of musicians. The only constants being the Frazier brothers, though the lineup has been stable over the last few years. A second trombone player, Stafford Agee, missed this gig.

One of two performances I attended which were part of a “Festival on the Move” stream (five performances in all over three days).

Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.

Lineup: Lumar LeBlanc (snare d), Julian Gosin (trumpet), Marcus Hubbard (trumpet), Erion Williams (tenor sax), Corey Payton (trombone), Damion Francois (sousaphone), Derrick Moss (bass d).

The Soul Rebels play in the characteristic modern New Orleans Brass Band style which combines older elements of jazz and marching band music with newer elements of R and B (funk, hip-hop, etc.). Like quite few other New Orleans Brass Bands their origins lie in the Young Olympia, mentored by Milton Batiste. The band contained founder members Lumar LeBlanc, Derrick Moss and Damion Francois (who left but was back for this tour at least). They kept to the traditional Brass Band instrumentation (no sign of a guitarist which has been part of the Soul Rebels in recent years).
