Quito is the capital and most populous city of Ecuador, with a population of approximately 3.1 million. The city stretches from north to south for 50 km, at an altitude of 2,800 m, on the slopes of the Guagua Pichincha volcano. It is said to have been founded by Spanish settlers on 6 December 1534, but in reality the Incas had settled there some 50 years earlier, in an area that had already been inhabited for almost 2500 years.

En torno a la Plaza, además de la Iglesia y el convento, se levantan edificios civiles de importancia.
La Plaza tiene una superficie aproximada de 7200 metros cuadrados, con lados que miden en metros lineales aproximadamente 85 metros. Al igual que las otras plazas de la ciudad, fue originalmente una simple explanada, y luego se lo convirtió en un parque y en una estación de autobuses.

La Virgen de El Panecillo, también conocida como Virgen de Quito por el nombre de la escultura en la que está inspirada, es un monumento de la ciudad de Quito en Ecuador.
Está ubicada sobre la cima de la colina de El Panecillo, una peculiar elevación con forma de un pan pequeño que se encuentra emplazada en pleno centro de la urbe y sirve de telón de fondo al Centro Histórico.
Con sus 41 metros de altura, si se suma la base, es la estatua más alta de Ecuador y una de las más altas de Sudamérica, superando incluso al famoso Cristo Redentor de la ciudad de RÃo de Janeiro. Es además la escultura de aluminio más alta del planeta.
