This evening I downloaded Snapz Pro, a screen capture tool for the Mac. Experimenting with some screencasting ideas, but until I can get the file size down, and ideally export to flash, I'm not sure how successful they will be.

The music is a little more pop, but I think it's a worthy interpretation of this video. The concept behind our piece is about dreams. 6/26/2010: Comparison 2.2 of uncompressed source file to Expression Encoder 4 Pro H.264 MP4 output on Vista 32-bit system. EE4 A/B Difference Mode shows very dark and very bright areas have the greatest variance between the input and output files (i.e. lower contrast in the MP4 file).

A windsurfer has his work cut out for him. Although Chicago wasn't in Irene's path, we did see strong winds and waves along the shore. Lake Michigan is normally placid; the large waves we were seeing looked more like ocean waves.

10/2/2010: Image and color profile P19 of a source H.264 mp4 file prior to editing. The video image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in VLC Media Player 1.1.4 on a second Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.

Video quality improves in VLC Media Player when the source file is played on a different Vista-32 computer (see previous slide P18). The color and luminance profile is comparable to Windows Media Player 12 (slide P13). In addition, there is little noticeable difference between the source video and EE4 output when played in VLC Media Player on the same computer (slides P11-P12). Therefore loss of contrast is likely a result of player-specific codecs and color management.
