Stopping a Police State: A Pocket Guide from Refuse & Resist!
We have seen the round-up and secret detention of those from Muslim and South Asian countries. We have seen the President order the military to seize citizens and hold them incommunicado and without charges. We have seen free speech marginalized and protest banned from public spaces. We have seen the FBI questioning people planning protests at the political conventions. We have seen the Patriot Act give police agents vast new powers of secret search and surveillance. We have seen a campaign to impose fundamentalist religious social norms. And we have even heard government agencies talking about plans to postpone national elections. For many in this country, police state conditions are not new. And since 9/11 millions more are threatened. It won’t do to count on others to do something and hope that it will all go away. No! We see where things are heading. The time to resist is now.
1. Build Communities of Resistance.
All across the country, local governments are refusing to cooperate with the Patriot Act and people are beginning to organize. Hang-outs, house parties, book clubs, film series, discussion groups, open mics and other cultural scenes build communities of trust as well as the networks to read the alternative press, discuss current events, raise money, organize defense committees, and promote active resistance.
2. Stand with Those Under Attack.
The government seeks to scapegoat whole sections of people and go after the leadership of any real resistance to their plans for empire. Yet all across the country people went to the aid of their Muslim neighbors and stood watch at local mosques after 9/11. The government’s plan is to pick us off one at a time. Our response must be to recognize that “It’s all one attack” and give aid and shelter all those under attack.
3. Don’t Talk.
Never answer the questions of police or government agents beyond identifying yourself where required by law. You should then state that you do not consent to any search and that you wish to be represented by an attorney. Do not say anything else, even if agents threaten you with a grand jury subpoena or promise to leave you alone if you “cooperate.” Recently activists at Drake University were called before a Grand Jury to give testimony about an antiwar conference on campus. They refused and public outcry forced the government to withdraw the subpoenas.
4. Defend Every Legal Right.
At the same time that the government invades other countries in the name of democracy, there is a constant chipping away at every legal right in this country. Follow the example of those who have videotaped and exposed beatings by police. Every denial of a permit, every arrest, every police raid on dissenters, every wire-tap, and every grand jury subpoena must be fought both in court and in the court of public opinion. This is part of the battle. Don’t let the police and media decide what is “legitimate protest” and who are “legitimate protesters.”
5. Handle Information Responsibly.
Choosing to keep your personal information and that of your organization confidential does not mean you have something to hide. It means you know what kind of country we live in! Librarians in California now destroy the records of what books people read to protect their patrons from government snoops. Unnecessary records should be destroyed, the audience at meetings should not be videotaped, e-mail should be encrypted with PGP, and vital information should be duplicated and stored in a secure location.
6. Oppose the Climate of Fear and Compulsory Patriotism.
It is the policies of the U.S. government that have put the American people in harm’s way. The leaders of the “new Rome” constantly seek to ensnare us in a “devil’s bargain”: a false promise to keep us safe if only we will give up all our rights to privacy and dissent, and hand over to them our allegiance for their war plans. In Madison, WI, the local school board refused a call from the federal government after 9/11 to compel school children to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in unison.
7. Be Part of the National Resistance Network.
In Refuse & Resist! some of us strongly believe in the principles and values to which this country has historically aspired, while others of us find oppression and injustice to be rooted in those same principles. But we are united as one in our determination to build a culture, climate and community of resistance against the current Ashcroft police-state measures with its imposition of Christian fundamentalist social norms.

Re-writing history
In his photo series, the french photographer, Nicolas Demeersman, invites us to see « history » from another point of view, questioning the images we see everyday, in mainstream media & film.
Well known, white, historical figures are presented as black people, in new and sometimes very clichéd scenarios, attempting to question what many people see as their reality.
We rarely think about the struggle of being ethnic in a “white world”, because many of us do not believe this struggle exists, until we experience it for ourselves. In media, there are very few black actors and cartoon characters in lead roles. The black character is always the first to die in horror films or is cast as the « best, funny friend ». Directors, producers, writers… are overlooked at awards ceremonies. This is happening in the 21st century, a time when all the consensus, intellectual and media, conclude that racism is one of the worst things to occur in the world.
One of the most obvious reasons for all of this, is that the history we know and learn about black culture, tends to focus on the bad events, such as slavery or colonisation… Very few people can name a good event, apart from the launch of Beyoncé’s last album.
Shot in studio, staged and retouched, the photographer plays with the codes of advertising and media, which sometimes excludes the black character/history. All the while creating amazing marketing words and sentences to justify this exclusion. The photographer uses all the « black clichés », to exaggerate the stories of the characters, creating a funny, sacastic photo series, that puts the onlooker at ease.
As if Snow White would have a banana instead of an apple or Hitler would question his own face. A black Wonder Woman for all the little girls to look up to, a black Napolean & Cesar, leaders of two the greatest Empires of their time, and a black Obelix, still larger than life. History is made by heroes and characters, not their skin.
Here's a couple of pieces that probably had some people, more specifically my wife, questioning my sanity. In my defense, it was cheap and I was in Winnipeg, so I needed a little something extra to keep me powering through the week.
Nendoroid Anna and Elsa from Frozen.
Now, I'm not as big of a Disney Nerd, as it were, as I used to be. I've always enjoyed their designs (though IMHO Aladdin beats them all), and I did enjoy the once or twice I saw Frozen. The story was cute, and the designs were quite nice. Didn't quite get into Carpool Karaoke mode that many others did when the song came on the radio, and with my children being quite young, I didn't have to endure tone dea.... I mean.. charming, renditions of the songs by my daughters.
Whist in Winnipeg, a local seller had these up for $25 a pop, albeit with slight damage to the Olaf that came with Anna. Figured it was a good opportunity to get them both at once, so one rainy morning before work I met up with the seller and got the deal one.
On a side note, the Medicom Anna and Elsa are OUTSTANDING, and I would love to get my hands on those without having to pay black market organ prices.
If you haven't watched Frozen.. somehow.. then you're probably still somewhat familiar with the characters. Anna is the plucky younger sister of the Royal family, while Elsa is quite literally an Ice Queen, and lives a life like Bruce Wayne from Act One of The Dark Knight Rises.
As I've probably said before, the Nendoroid "style" lends itself to certain characters. At worst, you get a chibi version of a normal proportioned character, like with those Cosbaby release that Hot Toys puts out, but sometimes that Nendoroid magic just makes this release of the character that much more magical.
In this case, it leans more towards the magical side, though not as magically delicious as, say Kirby. The simplifed art style and cute proportions do make animated characters like Anna and Elsa somewhat more appealing that normal, but I feel that, especially in the case of Elsa, there significant loss of detailing on the outfits is to the detriment of the overall character itself.
Again, your standard Nendoroid rules regarding articulation, QC, included accessory types and so on apply here. Of the two, I'd have to give the slight advantage to Elsa with her raised eyebrow expression and much cooler ice based accessories.
Olaf.. well, he's kind of there. Nice addition, but ultimately doesn't really add a whole lot to the set IMHO because if you bought one, you probably bought both to display together.
GSC included a set of arms that allows you to link the two figures together in that pose I keep picturing Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in.
This also brings me to the weakest part of the set, as it were.. that horrible snowflake base that Elsa comes with. It's honestly like a take out container lid with a snowflake moulded in.
Obviously while not an essential part of the Nendoroid experience (I don't think I actually own any of those, to be honest), a good solid set of figures that you shouldn't hesitate on if you find them for a good price.

All Is Quiet on the Domestic Front: a look at intimacy and dwelling was a daylong seminar on the home. The speakers explored various perceptions and theorisings on the home, the private, and the intimate. Ine Gevers began by critically questioning who may be excluded from conventional or traditional notions of the home. Her thesis focused on the significance of listening to those who reside outside the borders of inclusion, the mad, the disabled, and those without residence. Polly Gould gave a lecture and performance on “matter in and out of place”. She examined the social taboos around bodily secretions, specifically breast milk and touched upon the blurred and at times contradictory distinctions society makes between the public and private, the sightly and unsightly. Riek Sijbring, taking an art historical approach, looked at still life painting and the ways ‘the feminine’ was represented through the depiction of floral arrangements within an interior space. Finally, Apolonija Sustersic compared and contrasted the Modernist high architectural visions of Le Corbusier with the illegal self-built and at times provisional dwellings in Slovenia. At the end of the day there was a discussion among the guest lecturers and the audience. One of the over arching themes emerging was the necessity to look beyond the spatial qualities of the home and acknowledge its socially constructed borders.

PEACEKEEPING
For many Canadians, our peacekeeping tradition has become an important part of our national identity. Questioning the role of peacekeeping in our history and national identity is certainly provocative, but do Canada's international contributions during the Cold War merit a deeper look?
Canada did participate in many peacekeeping missions during the Cold War period Lester B. Pearson, a Canadian, is considered by many to be the founding father of peacekeeping. Canadian troops were involved in dozens of missions in Africa, the Midd East, Europe and Asia, earning high praise for their contribution to conflict resolution Canada is often seen, especially by Canadians, as a sort of neutral, honest broker motivated by humanitarian reasons to send troops abroad in the cause of peace.
While humanitarian concern and a desire for peace are important Canadian values, were there other motivations for our actions? Canada was a committed member of NATO and did not want Communist influence to spread. Did the Cold War influence our peacekeeping activity? A case in point is Cyprus. Canadian troops served on the Mediterranean island for decades reducing conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots Greece and Turkey were important NATO allies, and the fighting in Cyprus was straining relations between them. Conflict in Cyprus therefore risked weakening NATO and exposing an unstable Cyprus to Soviet influence. Do you think NATO's goals factored into the peacekeeping strategy?
Canadian peacekeeping missions were among the most high-profile activities of our military during much of the Cold War. Media paid a lot of attention to our troops serving in remote locations or in world "hot-spots" like Egypt, Pakistan or the Congo. After Korea, Canadian forces weren't involved in sustained combat operations-we even refused to send combat troops to Vietnam. To many, it seemed peacekeeping was our primary objective.
Was another story unfolding for Canada's military as well? Peacekeeping involved a small part of our military personnel and resources. Where did the rest go? The majority of Canada's military effort was dedicated to training for a war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The Navy developed anti-submarine techniques designed specifically to combat Soviet submarines. The Air Force prepared to intercept Soviet bombers over North America and to attack Soviet troop concentrations in Europe with nuclear weapons. How should we weigh our NATO training in our history?
What do you think about Canada's peacekeeping tradition during the Cold War?

They asked for a coupla shots of the finished, healed tatt for use in the vid.
So I asked Jennifer to take a few shots this morning after I emerged from the bath.

I salute you my loyal shadow
You are always here
Please do come to me if you may…
You will come to me!
For you are of no existence without me!
You’re my last hope…
Who would have thought that one can find hope in darkness?
& that this darkness is caused by light when light's considered the source of hope?

The guy in the denim jacket stood on the street corner for some time. He had a wheeled basket and a dolly containing a bass guitar, amp, TV, large fishing rod and several other items. The police passing by came to an abrupt halt and questioned the man as to where he obtained the items. Apparently he had a good explanation, because the cop got in his car and left. My guess is that he was trying to sell his personal items for rent money.
