And hiding from the rain at the same time! Thankfully it stopped fairly soon after 😄

The quarry, long since disused, is now surrounded by Alnwick Castle Golf Club.

An old quarry, white fence and train tracks...an unusual combination for a rather beautiful view. Maybe not that unusual after all.

Rano Raraku is known as “the quarry” as it was here where the moai were carved and then taken to the ahus distributed throughout the island. The quarry is made of tuff, i.e. hardened volcanic ash and is, therefore, softer and easier to cut; although it’s more fragile than basalt, a material used primarily as a sculpting tool.

Going back through the images I took on this windswept damp day out this week, I think I prefer the landscape shot of this scene to the portrait image I posted earlier. Although the light was better in the portrait shot I think this gives a better impression of this location and its setting on the bleak foothill moorlands.

So I decided to give it an airing! The forecast is looking promising for next week with some snow and a bit of light heading our way. So I hope to get back out into the Lakes and Dales in better conditions and tick off some of my "yet to do locations"!!

Thanks for taking a peek.

Enjoy a wonderful weekend!

Fisk Quarry Preserve is located in Isle La Motte, VT and is part of the Chazy Fossil Reef, a National Natural Landmark. This area offers visitors a chance to see some of the oldest reef in the world, as well as providing short interpretive walking trails.

I've always thought about photographing the magnificent old moss covered trees in Ricklow Quarry. But it's a photo I've always missed as it means unpacking the camera gear again.

With recent tree felling (I think these are safe), I thought I'd better take this opportunity.

I got myself in a position to fill the background fully with the quarry spoils. A foggy day would be nice. It might not help too much though as you can't get enough distance to compress the fog.

The Vivian quarry section has both climbing and diving sections. The diving experience has normally good visibility, with depths ranging from 6 metres (20 ft) to 18 metres (59 ft), a platform at 6 metres (20 ft), plus flooded buildings, boats, a van and a gnome garden

The Dinorwic quarry also known as Dinorwig quarry) is a large former slate quarry, now home to the Welsh National Slate Museum, located between the villages of Llanberis and Dinorwig in North Wales. It was[when?] the second largest slate quarry in Wales, indeed in the world, after the neighbouring Penrhyn quarry near Bethesda.

It covered more than 700 acres (283 ha) consisting of two main quarry sections with 20 galleries in each and a number of ancillary workings. Extensive internal tramway systems connected the quarries using inclines to transport slate between galleries

The deep depths of the quarry are revealed on the steep climb up Moughton via Moughton Nab.

Another impression from our foggy November walk last weekend. Taken from a relic of the past, the granite extracted from the quarries in the area was used for prominent buildings and constructs like the Tower Bridge or Trafalgar Square in London.

For those interested, here is the link to a video I made of the entire walk: youtu.be/4igRPi1W_b4

View on the ENCI quarry located at Sint-Pieterberg, Maastricht.

A slide of a not so quite typical Dutch sight!

ENCI stands for Eerste Nederlandse Cement Industry (First Dutch Cement Industry), Its activities started in the 1920s. Commercial excavation activities at this location will soon cease (around 2018) and the site will be redeveloped for recreation.

When we had a holiday home in Cornwall and used to cross Dartmoor on our way to Tavistock, we invariably passed this old granite quarry on the western side of the moor. Some of the rocks appear to be piled very precariously on the side of the road, but they haven't moved yet! The quarry started operating in 1876 and finally closed in 1997. It is said that the granite from Merrivale was used to pave Trafalgar Square and also the Falklands Memorial. It is reckoned to be one of the three main quarries on Dartmoor.

The white buildings to the right of centre include the Dartmoor Inn, where we often use to stop for a break. But on this occasion we simply didn't have time.
