Pygmy owls are only about 7" high but are ferocious hunters with a taste for songbirds.

I think he chased a sparrow into our window which he also hit. They both flew off but before this owl did he sat in a tree in my backyard for several minutes! I have not seen them in my yard before so this was a special sighting for me.

Pygmy Cormorant, Hungary

The Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) is the smallest owl in Europe.

These owls are 16-18cm. tall (6.3-7.1") They hunt during the day searching for songbirds, mice, and voles. They frequently prey on birds and mammals larger than itself. Songbirds will sometimes gather to "mob" a pygmy-owl discovered in daylight to chase him away.

I went on a birding tour yesterday in hopes of finding one and was so excited to finally do just that!

Occasionally I catch these staredowns from the Owl that make me so glad it is tiny :)

Taken in Leavenworth, Washington, U.S.A. by David.

I photographed this guy while visiting Leavenworth to see the local White-headed Woodpecker pair. We got great views of the 'peckers but between their preference for shade and man-made perches they were extremely tough to photograph.

Pygmies are almost as bad as Kinglets for hyperactivity, but they are pretty friendly little guys.

Eurasian pygmy owl, Glaucidium passerinum, varpuspöllö, Finland.

I first noticed the pygmy owl from car when passing by a small logging opening. Later I returned to the spot but the owl stayed far away in a tree all the time. A patient wait yielded no results.

As I was leaving I looked back and saw the owl finally coming down and stopping on a small bird feeder. There were no birds around so the owl was after voles which also like to visit under the feeder. To get to a better position I had to walk close by the owl. It was funny how its head slowly turned around as it followed my every step.

There has been a pygmy owl territory nearby for several years now. Their wistful sounds can be heard often there in spring evenings.

Post dinner portrait

We were watching the owl hunt for over an hour last night it captured this shrew right in front of us. Yesterday was one of those epic days with my friend Anthony we found Pygmy Owls, Black Bears plus magical forests.

I spot metered as the light was fading fast although I don’t normally like a dark background here it helps subdue background distractions.

He got prey about 100 ft away and took off to this mossy branch for us to photograph about 20 minutes at sunset yesterday.

Thank you so much for all your comments and faves. Have a great day folks. Dont forget to check out my facebook page here www.facebook.com/ThyBunPhotography/ I post daily there.

My husband and I saw these two cuties on Thanksgiving Day in Costa Rica! We heard a weird call by the hotel pool and then my husband spotted these two ferruginous pygmy owls with the binoculars. What a find :-)!

Not much birding activity lately but one recent highlight was this pygmy owl which I photographed from car window on a very dull day.

The Northern Pygmy-Owl may be tiny, but it's a ferocious hunter with a taste for songbirds. These owls are mostly dark brown and white, with long tails, smoothly rounded heads, and piercing yellow eyes. They hunt during the day by sitting quietly and surprising their prey.

Well after driving around for almost 5 hours - stopping - looking - seeing nothing - we finally saw this owl. I feel that we were very lucky. This was a cooperative owl who moved around onto about 10 different perches. Most of the time he was surrounded by branches or in poor light, but I finally managed to get him on a clean perch in open shade. I took over (gulp) 1000 shots!!! We had 16 minutes with him before he flew off.

Been away for a few days, we found this little darling on our road trip, made my day :)

As a defensive measure, songbirds often gather to mob sitting owls until they fly away. Mobbing songbirds can help you find these unobtrusive owls, as can listening for their call, a high-pitched series of toots."

A Northern Pygmy-Owl in Ketchum Idaho. The owl was looking at some Black-billed Magpies that were pestering and pecking him. He finally flew away. I hope it got some peace from the annoying Magpies.

A ferruginous pygmy owl seen in Costa Rica. It later joined its mate and they both sat on the same branch together.

A Pygmy owl is always a pleasure find, but find it with some fall colors in the background and then it becomes extra special.
