[NL] In 2022 vierde InterRail het 50-jarig bestaan. Dat werd gevierd met een kortingsactie: 50% korting op maandpassen. In een impulsieve bui besloot ik ook een pas te kopen. Deze gebruikte ik hoofdzakelijk voor mijn enkele reis naar Estland. Op de 6e dag van mijn reis naar Estland had ik een rustdag in de hoofdstad van Letland: Riga. Deze dag gebruikte ik om onder andere het Letse spoorwegmuseum te bezoeken. ’s Avonds maakte ik nog een wandeling en maakte daarbij wat foto’s, onder meer van het passerend treinverkeer op de brug over de Westelijke Dvina.

Het passagiersvervoer per spoor is in Letland niet bijzonder divers. Ten tijde van opname waren de enige raampjestreinen die van Pasažieru Vilciens. In 2022 bestond het materieelpark louter uit oude Sovjetproducties, maar anno 2024 zijn de eerste Škoda 16Ev-treinstellen ook ingestroomd. Op de foto zien we echter een zesdelige ER2T, eentje met de oude kopvorm, onderweg naar eindbestemming Riga, op de avond van 26 augustus 2022. Verder zien we op de achtergrond van links naar rechts de werkzaamheden aan het station van Riga, dat wordt voorbereid op Rail Baltica, de markthallen van Riga en de Letse Wetenschapsacademie.

[EN] In 2022, I made an Interrail trip towards the Baltic States. On day 6, I had the entire day to spend in Riga. After dinner, I made a walk towards the other side of the Western Dvin/Daugava. The sole passenger operator in Latvia, Pasažieru Vilciens, uses USSR rolling stock only, back in 2022. Now, in 2024, the first Škoda 16Ev EMU’s are in service. The photo shows an unknown ER2T EMU approaching its final call, Riga Main Station, on the evening of August 26, 2022.

[DE] Im Jahr 2022 habe ich eine Reise mit Interrail gemacht. Am 6. Tag war ich in Riga. Nach dem Abendessen machte ich eine Spazierrunde entlang des Dünas (Daugava). Ein Abendbild bei der Eisenbahnbrücke war natürlich eine Pflicht. Ein unbekannter sechsteiliger ER2T-Triebzug, mit Ziel Riga Hbf, überquerte die Düna am Abend des 26. August.

Moments before the angry Pacific decided to show me who is in charge. The seawall, in front of me, is about as tall as I am. Thirty seconds after this photo was taken a monstrous wave crashed over. With water up to my knees and splashing over my head I bunkered down, facing shore, with my camera and tripod held tightly against my chest, I just took the saturating sea life-lesson. When the quenching subsided, I waddled away and proceeded to the nearest exit. My pockets were filled with sand, my clothes were soaked through, and my ears were ringing. I nodded to the pelicans, I'm sure they were laughing, and scurried up the goat trail that led me here. Lesson being: Always get insurance for your camera rentals. (No cameras were harmed in the making of this tale)
