for the ol' boy ( 72 ; )

When I was a kid we called these girly pushups. If you were caught by one of the other boys doing them this way, your life was over. It didn't matter that I was a weakling and could only do one regular pushup.

Eight Israeli soldiers joined us as peers for 6 days, and they were awesome. Their names were Mor, Bar, Barack, Gal, Ofri, O'fear, Liat, and Yarden. Service in the Israeli army is a mandatory 2 years for girls, and 3 for guys, starting at age 18. Our friendships with them were formed almost immediately. Everyone was in the same age range, and it was very interesting to learn how different their lives are from ours, but also incredible how much we had in common. They are just as addicted to their cell phones and Facebook as American students, and we shared a lot of the same interests in movies, tv, and pop culture.

On the morning of our sunrise hike up Mt. Masada, our soldiers pulled a prank on us. As we arrived at the base of the peak, the soldiers started yelling and screaming at us to get off the bus and line up. They were giving us a little taste of the army. I got called out for laughing too much and was made to give Mor 20 pushups. Then they gave us some war paint and told us to get our asses up the mountain.

Continuing a tradition since 1663 when the Lords Proprietors were first granted permission by the Carolina Charter, North Carolina National Guard Soldiers kept ready to deploy in defense of friends, family and neighbors during May Drill at headquarters in Raleigh and at Camp Butner in Stem, North Carolina. Pushups, sit-ups, 2-mile runs, pistol and rifle qualification were the order of the day for students, business owners, professionals, stay at home parents, Citizen-Soldiers all. Many of the bigger grand ancient temples of north no longer exist. However some ancient beautiful temples still survive in remote places such as Kajuraho, orissa, rajasthan etc. Many new large temples have been built in the last 100 years. Most north indian temples however, are simple small structures meant for the needs of the local people. During the difficult period of islamic rule 12th to 17th centuries, the temples lost their zeal for elaborate and expensive rituals, and in most ordinary temples in north india ritual is very simple in stark contrast to south indian temples which have elaborate ritual. Also north indian temples often tend to be less orthodox and in many cases all and sundry are permitted to enter the innermost sanctum of the deity and worship the deity personally. In such cases, the deity will not be adorned with valuable jewellery. The innermost heart of the temple is the sanctum where the deity (usually of fixed stone) is present, followed by a large hall for lay worshippers to stand in and obtain "darshan" or divine audience. There may or may not be many more surrounding corridors, halls etc. However there will be space for devotees to go around the temple in clock wise fashion circumbulation as a mark of respect. In north indian temples, the tallest towers are built over the sanctum sanctorum.
