Not sure about the actual purpose of this drainage structure. It apparently belongs to the outflow system of the "Kläranlage Gut Großlappen" wastewater treatment plant.

We saw 3 owls at the ball fields and one at the library, but none had a background or habitat that was pleasing. After driving around town for a while and looking at the vacant lots (of which there are far fewer due to the building boom) we found this cutie that had a nice nest and surroundings.

This excavator had a primary purpose as an earth mover, yet in this snow covered image - it looks like it could have been contracted out to dig through the freshly fallen snow.
Looks can be deceiving.
**Captured less than two weeks ago. The snow has since then melted and Spring appears to have arrived.
Excavators are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper, bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house". The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.

This beautiful warbler flits about very actively in the trees, usually holding its wings and tail partly spread, as if to show off their patches of color. At times it feeds more like a flycatcher than a typical warbler, hovering among the foliage and often flying out to grab insects in mid-air.

With an area of 406 ha, it covers a riparian strip running some 20 km along the St. Lawrence. During August and September, we observed 4 juvenile Piping Plovers in the same general area of the beach. They were usually in the tire tracks or up in the dunes on the dry sand. Nice images but I prefer my shorebirds in the surf or on the wet sand. It was late in the afternoon with about 90 minutes of light left when we came upon our 4 friends. Were where they? In the tire tracks of course. We had to make a decision. Do we wait and hope that the birds move to the water or continue on our way and hope to find something else to work with. We decided to give them 15 minutes. Boy am I glad we waited. They did indeed head to the water and were outrageously cooperative. They made up for all the hours we patiently waited over the summer. We took tons of images but this was my favorite.

Got close and personal to a very vintage movie projector. It was the first time I've ever seen one of these devices and I loved the look of it! It would be cool to have one of these on display and even luckier if I used it for its purpose. It's a purchase I'll definitely revisit in the future.
Have a great day! :)
The "new" St. Lawrence Church of 1778 in Ayot St. Lawrence. I have begun to reflect on this marvellous building in previous images. The two wings of the structure, left and right, are blatantly useless. They serve no purpose whatsoever. Visually, however, they are great, impressive and attractive. Think of a peacock!
My purpose for this shot was to make it look like a drone picture, and I think I went pretty close to it!
I absolutely adore this spot, by far my favourite view from Passo del Lupo.

Life is a Rainbow: Color Gris
"What to ourselves in passion we propose,
The passion ending, doth the purpose lose.
The violence of either grief or joy
Their own enactures with themselves destroy:
Where joy most revels, grief doth most lament;
Grief joys, joy grieves, on slender accident.
This world is not for aye, not 'tis not strange
That even our loves should with our fortunes change;
For 'tis a question left us yet to prove,
Whether love lead fortune, or else fortune love.
The great man down, you mark his favorite flies;
The poor advanc'd makes friends of enemies.
And hitherto doth love on fortune tend;
For who not needs shall never lack a friend,
And who in want a hollow friend doth try,
Directly seasons him his enemy.
But, orderly to end where I begun,
Our wills and fates do so contrary run
That our devices still are overthrown;
Our thoughts are ours, their ends none of our own"

I did a bit of research yesterday. This sheep often has dark liquid coming from the slit next to the eye. Sheep don't have a lacrimal gland, they have an infraorbital organ, a gland that produces a substance with unknown purpose. There are three theories about this substance. A: the moor substance, the more dominance. This could really be it. This sheep is the boss. B: the substance smells good (from a sheepical point of view) and could be a self-produced perfume. Maybe that's why my sheep look so befuddled. C: The substance is a self-produced skin-care. Sounds unlikely, but sheep have scent glands between their toes and while I thought that those interdigital glands produce a substance to nourish the keratin part of the toes, I read now, that the interdigital gland has a sexual function too. And I guess the feet smell better.

Piping Plovers are nearly invisible until they run a short distance, stop, and tilt forward to pull an insect or worm from the soft sand. They tend to forage alone or in small groups sticking to the higher parts of the shoreline relative to other shorebirds.

2 Corinthians 4:18
This small church,located just south of Oakville,IA.,lost its purpose and its soul many years ago.In the spring it is nearly totally buried by foliage,only in the winter does its plight become apparent.Many years ago,the farmer who owns the land put a set of barn doors in the rear of the empty church for machinery storage.It was used for that purpose until the floor caved in-an old wagon still sets inside with its back axles buried beneath the church floor.I'm not making any judgements here,but I think the almighty might not take too kindly to see one of his houses used this way. Nonetheless,this is one of the most photogenic abandonments an explorer will ever come across-no matter how sad it may seem....
Have a great weekend and sliders sunday all!

Red Knots are plump, neatly proportioned sandpipers that in summer sport brilliant terracotta-orange underparts and intricate gold, buff, rufous, and black upperparts. This cosmopolitan species occurs on all continents except Antarctica and migrates exceptionally long distances, from High Arctic nesting areas to wintering spots in southern South America, Africa, and Australia. Red Knots from eastern North America have declined sharply in recent decades owing in part to unsustainable harvest of horseshoe crab eggs, and they have become a flagship species for shorebird conservation in the twenty-first century.

Anchored with Purpose
The Korana carries everything in its path – branches, leaves, fragments of its own shore. The water is still high, still restless.
Yet this boat remains.
Half on land, half in the river. Secured by chain – not out of fear, but certainty. Suspended between movement and stillness.
Sometimes strength is not in drifting forward, but in knowing where you belong.

A mi biramo stati. Ne zato što ne možemo dalje, nego zato što znamo gdje pripadamo.
The purpose of my drive yesterday was to locate the Northfield Tunnel of the defunct New York Ontario and Western Railroad. I believe when I took the picture I was practically above the portal. Perhaps just past this ridge. But my wounded feet and legs and my arthritic knees ruled out any bushwhacking. In looking for the tunnel I spotted this 1930's era car bodies rusting away.

My wife Fran and I, recently spent 9 days in Colorado, primarily photographing the deer rut. The first 2 days there it snowed 16 inches. It was a ton of fun and a wonderful experience. The largest terrestrial animals in North America, bison are characterized by a hump over the front shoulders and slimmer hindquarters. Both male and female bison have a single set of short, sharply pointed, hollow horns.
