The Magdalenenklause is a hermitage, designed as an artificial ruin, located in the Nymphenburg Palace Park.

The purpose of the building was to serve as a memento mori for the Elector (Kurfürst) Max Emanuel - he was supposed to visit the building and contemplate the transience of being alive and a ruler.

Unfortunately Max Emanuel did not live long enough to see the building completed - sic transit gloria...

Mekong Delta is covered with a network of canals, and goods are transported by boat. But the primary purpose of the canal was to drain water and secure dry farmland. Excavated soil was used to construct dykes to save the farmland from flooding, and houses were built on the dykes. These dykes were later strengthened to form circle levees that shut out flooding water in the rainy season completely.

This is a knowhow developed in the Vietnamese homeland of Red River Delta (or Hong River Delta) in the north, with which ancient Vietnamese converted the wetlands and flood plains to fertile rice paddies.

The same knowhow was applied to much larger Mekong Delta from the 17th century onwards.

A large, big-headed diving duck with a gently sloping forehead and a stout neck. They are gregarious during the nonbreeding season, forming large single-species rafts or mixing with Redheads and scaups. It dives underwater to feed on plant tubers, seeds, and clams.

This excavator had a primary purpose as an earth mover, yet in this snow covered image - it looks like it could have been contracted out to dig through the freshly fallen snow.

Looks can be deceiving.

**Captured less than two weeks ago. The snow has since then melted and Spring appears to have arrived.

Excavators are heavy construction equipment consisting of a boom, dipper, bucket and cab on a rotating platform known as the "house". The house sits atop an undercarriage with tracks or wheels. They are a natural progression from the steam shovels and often mistakenly called power shovels. All movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. Due to the linear actuation of hydraulic cylinders, their mode of operation is fundamentally different from cable-operated excavators which use winches and steel ropes to accomplish the movements.

Our famous Boulder Flatirons shot while visiting Chautauqua Park. We were lucky there was a lull in our wind and the temps were very mild. These rocks were named after the old flat iron, irons that lady's (or men) would use to do their

laundry with.

I'm not for sure what the purpose of the fence was but I think it's there to remind people to stay on the trails.

Nasi Gorend (Fried Rice) is the most popular dish on the Indonesians menu, in exclusive restaurants as well as at the little street stall to enjoy right there or take away! :)

Crisp facial markings make the White-throated Sparrow an attractive bird as well as a hopping, flying anatomy lesson. There’s the black eye stripe, the white crown and supercilium, the yellow lore's, the white throat bordered by a black whisker, or malar stripe. They’re also a great entrée into the world of birdsong, with their pretty, wavering whistle of Oh-sweet-Canada. These forest sparrows breed mostly across Canada, but they’re familiar winter birds across most of eastern and southern North America and California.

Ataturk Arboretum may be defined as a living museum established for scientific and educational purposes where indigeneus and exotic trees, shrubs and other woody plant species with known origin and properly labeled with botanic names take place.

The eponymous owner of the Buick factory had already made many inventions during his younger years including the garden sprinkler and a way to enamel coat cast iron in a cheaper way.

In the year 1890, Buick became interested in the internal combustion engine, but for the time being produced stationary engine first.

In 1902 he founded the Buick Manufactoring Company whose purpose was to build engines and automobiles.

In the meantime, he had also invented the OHV enigine that allowed higher power than the side-valved enginers in use untill now.

Buick sold his company to James Whiting who brought William Durant to run the company, and these made the Buick brand one of the largest automobile builders in the United States.

In 1908 James Whiting founded General Motors with the earned capital as a holding company above the Buick brand, and through various acquisitions General Motors grew into a large concern of more than 30 companies and acquired an excellent reputation for reliability.

This juwel in the picture is an original 1931 condition Buick Series 90 with an 8 cylinder inline engine with a displacement of 5.650 cc and an output of 104 HP at only 2.800 rpm.

It was driven by a 3 speed manual trnasmission and its top speed was a staggering 160 km/h for the time.

His road handling was excellent and there was nothing lacking in passenger safety either, for example, the car was ecquipped with a front spotlight that rotated with the steering.

The famous "Flying Lady" adorns the top of the radiator cap as Buick's mascot., and it is like a small work of art........

This song sparrow is resting in a redosier dogwood shrub. These wonderful bushes grow naturally in the wet barrens here at Chipera Prairie, but do just as well when planted in the front lawn for decorative purposes.

Krzyżtopór is a castle located in the village of Ujazd, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It was originally built by a Polish nobleman and Voivode of Sandomierz, Krzysztof Ossoliński (1587–1645). The castle was partially destroyed during the Swedish invasion known as The Deluge in 1655, and then reduced to ruins during the war of the Bar Confederation by the Russians in 1770.

Even though extensive research has been carried out through the years, historians have been unable to fully explain all aspects of the complex. No documents have been preserved that have enabled the determination of either the date of commencement of the castle's construction or the date of its completion. The name of the architect is also unknown. Krzysztof Ossoliński was enamoured with magic. while the unique symmetry of the castle is evident even in its ruined state, the hidden meanings that may have been incorporated into virtually every part of the castle are not obvious.

The very name of the complex is a mysterious one. Krzysztof Ossoliński officially named it Krzysztofory, which is derived from Latin word Christophoros. Later, the name changed to Krzyżtopór, which is a compounding of two Polish words – krzyż ("cross", a symbol of the Catholic faith and Ossoliński's policies) and topór ("axe", the charge from the family's coat of arms). Both symbols can be seen on the gate of the castle. Also, above the gate there is the date 1631, but to what this date refers has not been firmly established.

The castle, built by Swiss engineer Wawrzyniec (Lawrence) Senes (probably born in Sent, Switzerland), is a typical example of the so-called palazzo in fortezza – an intermingling of both palace and fortress. The total size of the complex is 1.3 hectares; the length of the perimeter walls is 700 meters; the total area of all interior rooms is around 70 000 square meters. The basic design was based on the palace of Cardinal Alexander Farnese, located in the Italian village of Caprarola. Reportedly, the castle once had 365 windows (as many as days of the year), 52 rooms (as many as weeks of the year), 12 ballrooms (as many as months of the year) and also 4 towers (as many as 4 seasons of the year). For defensive purposes, the castle was erected upon a rocky hill, making it impossible for an enemy to organize an underground attack.

Krzyżtopór was furnished with amenities that were rarely seen in the 17th century, such as ventilation and heating system, and unique waterworks that provided all rooms with fresh water. Allegedly, the ceiling in one of dining rooms was made up of an aquarium containing exotic fish. Additionally, a system of dumbwaiters carried food from pantries to the upper floors.

The castle, without convenient proximity to main roads and rail connections, is visited by relatively few tourists. However, as walls, bastions and moat are relatively well-preserved, its magnitude is still very impressive. Though it is regarded as a permanent ruin, since around 90 percent of the walls have been preserved, reconstruction has been planned several times. Currently, efforts have been underway to roof the entire complex; however, this ambitious project lacks sufficient funding.

Broadway Tower is a "folly" on Broadway Hill, near the large village of Broadway, in the English county of Worcestershire and was constructed at the second-highest point of the Cotswolds. In architecture, a "folly" is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose. The tower itself stands 65 feet (20 metres) high.

This "Saxon" tower was the brainchild of Capability Brown and designed by James Wyatt in 1794 in the form of a castle, and built for Lady Coventry in 1798–1799. (Wiki)

Probably the most common duck species in North America, but still one of my favorites to photograph-especially when they're "hamming it up" for the cameras. There were three drakes surrounding a hen vying for her attention. This drake was bathing and stretching for minutes on end. He must have won her affection because he swam off with the hen. The two remaining drakes took a cold shower.

1 cup margarine, softened

2 cups white sugar

3 eggs

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

|2 cups apples - peeled, cored and finely diced

1 cup semisweet parve chocolate chips

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9 or 10 inch tube pan.

2. In a large bowl cream the margarine with the sugar. Beat in the eggs then add the water and the vanilla.

3. Stir the flour, cocoa, baking soda, ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg together. Beat this mixture into the creamed mixture. Stir in the chopped apples and the semisweet chocolate chips. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

4. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the cake tests done when a toothpick is inserted near the center. Transfer to a rack to cool. Makes about 16 servings.

The Blisterhead or Groninger Blisterhead is a Dutch breed of dual-purpose cattle. for blister head. Its main breeding area is in the province of Groningen.

White-headed cattle in Holland have been mentioned as early as the fourteenth century Cattle showing some similarity to the modern Blaarkop appear in an Adoration by Pieter Aertsen dating from about 1560, and in a seventeenth-century From the nineteenth century, there are also Blisterheads in the Utrecht and Leiden regions.

Bulls of this type were among the cattle shipped to the Cape of Good Hope by Willem Adriaan van der Stel during his time as governor of the Cape Colony (1699–1707).

The Blisterhead founding, a non-profit foundation for the development and conservation of the Blisterhead, was established in 2002.

The Blisterhead breed is sturdily built with matching muscles, a horned head, and strong legs. Both red (60% of the population) and black (40%) Blisterheads exist. The body is solid red or black, while the head is white with a red or black ring (blister) around the eyes; the tail has a white tip.

Bulls are 1.45 to 1.50 metres (4 ft 9 in to 4 ft 11 in) high and weigh 800 kilograms (1,800 lb). Cows are 1.35 to 1.40 metres (4 ft 5 in to 4 ft 7 in) high and weigh 600 kilograms (1,300 lb).

Diglossa sittoides (Rusty Flowerpiercer / Picaflor canela)

No problem with her bill! The hooked, upturned bill is used to puncture the bases of flowers for the purpose of feeding on nectar.

The Rusty Flowerpiercer is a small tanager of South American mountains. The species is found in forest, edge habitat, and gardens between 1500 and 3000 meters from the coastal mountains of Venezuela south along the Andes to northern Argentina.

CSX B708 arrived in Shippensburg right as a short rain storm moved across the area. I'm a sucker for the Geep mother-slug sets, and when I saw the no-longer-a-GP30 was going to lead west to Letterkenny I stuck around despite the conditions. I'm glad I did.

Just as the rain tapered to a mist the setting sun found a hole in the clouds, setting off this brief rainbow. Luckily the train was close, and made the frame before the light quickly faded.
