on our first day in Chilean Patagonia we reached Torres del Paine NP right before sunset
We were delighted when our guide spotted a female Puma with her 2 cubs descending a hill to reach a waterhole in a valley.
This image shows the 2 cubs looking at their mother

a herd of Guanaco's has detected a female Puma among the low vegetation on a hill. Instead of running they are intensely watching the cat
Guanaco's are the main prey species of Pumas in Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile
With sentinels placed on hill tops Guanaco herds have a very efficient defense system during the daytime.
We have observed several times that with their excellent eyesight these sentinels are able to detect movement several hundred meters away. Often it are Puma cubs that break cover for an instant which makes daytime hunting very difficult for puma mothers.
The sound of the Guanaco alarm calls carries quite far.

Puma is a genus in the family Felidae whose only extant species is the cougar also known as the puma, mountain lion, and panther, among other names. Pumas are large, secretive cats. They are also commonly known as cougars and mountain lions, and are able to reach larger sizes than some other "big" cat individuals. Despite their large size, they are more closely related to smaller feline species than to lions or leopards. The two subspecies of pumas have similar characteristics but tend to vary in color and size. Pumas are the most adaptable felines in the Americas and are found in a variety of different habitats, unlike other cat species. Here a mother and one of her "big cubs" (there were two), peacefully enjoying their habitat in Torres del Paine, Chile.
Wishing everyone a Peaceful Travel Tuesday!

With a shoulder height of up to 90 cm and a weight of 100 kg, the Puma is one of the largest predatory cats in the world. Nevertheless, he is not scientifically one of the big cats, but one of the small cats. His next relative is the Jaguarundi, also called weasel cat.
Unlike big cats such as lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar, the puma cannot roar. Instead, he often produces scream-like sounds.
This a young 1,5 year old female named Neneo. She is a successful hunter. Her scars on the nose are distinctive.

We watched as the puma kitten ran up the mountain right by where we were standing to get to her mamma who was calling her from above.

Torres del Paine. Derrière un rideau de graminées. Les prochaines images concernent Neneo. Tall grass screen. The next pictures concern Neneo being familiar with tourism since her birth.
I gave a talk about Patagonia yesterday evening which made me search through my old files for images. This was a shot of two Pumas silhouetted against a red sunrise but I had initially dismissed it as too grainy. But I reprocessed it using Topaz software and it made a dramatic image to finish on, even though it was sunrise, not sunset. It was taken in the Torres del Paine national park in southern Chile where Pumas (aka Cougars or Mountain Lions) are not uncommon and relatively easy to see. They are most active at dusk and dawn so we used to set out before dawn to reach the best areas when it was light enough to see. This was an opportunistic sighting en route to the best areas. One Puma is obvious but the left hand Puma could be mistaken for rocks. And if you want to know what they look like in daylight here's one: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/30268381566/in/photolist

Portrait of a big tomcat ;-)
His "cry" surprised me, a very little "miaw" almost ridiculous regarding to it's height :-)

Untamed Pumas of Patagonia
We're done!
Just before Christmas we ended 2022 with an intense series of incredibly successful Pumas of Patagonia Expeditions.
We can safely say every client went home wowed and immensely pleased with their stash of photos and memories. Some are already planning their next visit.
We kept waiting for it to peak, but every day brought something new and amazing and special.
Roll on 2023.
Thanks to the guide and tracker teams that made it all possible.

Patagonia, Chile
October - December 2022
We caught this young Puma coming down the hillside just as they walked through a patch of Mata Guanaco in flower.
Taken on one of our Untamed Pumas of Patagonia Photography Expeditions in October 2022.
We are now offering our first Fixed Departure for this destination in October 2023!
Join us and a small group of individuals for the opportunity to take a walk on the wild side. To observe, immerse yourself and photograph the pumas and other wildlife of Patagonia.
Come and explore the southern tip of the America’s, where the winds race across glacial fields, between towering mountain peaks, across the open steppe and glacial lakes.
