A dusk view of Tacoma, WA's, WestRock mill. It is always fun to shoot, and always different. I think the polarizer was still on, perhaps by accident, but it did increase the saturation. Yes, I did enhance the fog effect a bit, as I remember the scene. The tide was calm here which helped with the reflections.

For weeks now I've been trying to get a sunset shot that didn't include the pulpmill smoke stack. Today I gave up. The reflection was just too nice.
The WestRock mill in Tacoma, WA takes on a life of it's own at dusk. It was owned by Simpson until a few years ago. It is often photographed in many different ways but the results are always fun.

The moose River near Old Forge NY is currently very low on water due to the drought conditions. In the background is the old Mckeever pulp mill from days gone by.
I escaped the confines of my condo again today to enjoy some fresh air, sunshine and scenery. I got some river views, some birds, and, of course, some more marmots.

Montana Rail Link’s Schilling Local switches the massive pulp mill located at Schilling near Frenchtown, Montana, on September 21, 2006. In later years, the facility was operated by Smurfit-Stone Container, produced linerboard paper used to make cardboard boxes. It was MRL’s largest customer until the plant closed at the end of 2009. Powering the local are two MRL EMD GP35s came from Grand Trunk Western and are former DT&I locomotives, hence the lack of dynamic brakes.
Yesterday I mentioned getting hired at a pulp mill on the west coast of Vancouver Island. After two years in the machine room - the finishing area, where my favourite job was driving forklift - I was ready to move on. I had money in the bank; these industrial jobs pay well. I had seen some serious injuries; these industrial jobs are dangerous. It was time for something different.
One night in May I brought my camera in, shot some images of the machine room interior. I didn't ask permission and no one told me I couldn't. I made this final shot after my shift ended, propping my camera on the roof of my car. The air quality in my specific workplace was fine - noise was the main issue - but after two years of the stuff you see here raining down on my car, its paint was all blistered and rust was consuming the metal beneath. A four year old vehicle, pretty much ruined. I had bought it almost new for the whopping sum of $2,000, but I now had ten times that in the bank, so I just bought another, and came out ahead - and with all my fingers intact. Watching a co-worker lose three fingers while standing ten feet from me was the final push that got me out of there. I knew I had to find something less dangerous to do for a living.

This is the Simpson Kraft pulp and paper mill in Tacoma, WA. It is being bought out by Rock Tenn and was St. Regis in years gone by. The Olympic Mountains can be seen in the background and the Puyallup River in the foreground. Nothing like a long exposure of industry, right? Locomotive 751 219 has just arrived at Paskov Railway Station with the Mn80031 freight train, which came from the BIOCEL pulp mill and is bound for Ostrava.

Depuis quelque temps je voulais tester un petit truc que j’avais vu sur internet soit prendre une photo avec un masque de soudure comme filtre. La technique est bien simple, il suffit de placer la plaque de verre d’un masque de soudure en face de la lentille ce qui diminue dramatiquement la quantité de lumière vue par l’appareil. Le filtre que j’ai trouvé est environ l’équivalent d’un filtre bloquant 15 stops de lumière. Pour un filtre à moins de 10$ ce n’est pas si mal. Cependant, la photo demande une bonne correction de couleur vu que le filtre ajoute une teinte verte très prononcée.
Ensuite, il suffit de trouver un endroit intéressant avec des objets en mouvement ou de l’eau pour créer un bel effet de flou. Pour cette photo, on peut voir le bâtiment 1912 de la Pulperie de Chicoutimi et la rivière se déversant vers le Saguenay.

This is the pulp sheet coming off the final rollers and heading to the automatic cutter and stacker (called a "layboy"). If I recall, pulp would pass through the machine at 300 feet per minute or even faster, especially when the company had a contract and a deadline. The noise was fearsome, well over 100 decibels in some areas. When I saw one of my co-workers lose three fingers at this exact spot - caught between two rollers and gone in an instant - I knew it was time to get out. That was the last industrial job I took; my next job was in a photolab, and it was life changing.
I don't regret my two years in the mill, although my parents and other relatives surely were puzzled by this choice; I had walked away from a possible academic career a few years earlier. I came out of it flush, and the money saved bought me some time to dive deeper into photography. I bought darkroom equipment and learned to print. I had my first photos published. At 30, I had reached a crossroad.
