We have two chipmunks that visit the garden. I caught them the other day in a battle over some sunflower seeds. This is the victor standing guard and giving him that “make a move I dare you” look. LOL

The weather has just not been cooperating for photos this winter. On the milder days it's always gloomy with no sun. Today we finally get full sunshine and it's a cold -30°C outside! So I went through my archives and found this mallard duck making me think of the warm days of summer.

I can't believe how I still have flowers on my butterfly bushes after the morning frosts we've had. There are still a few bees hanging around. They move slow because of the cold, so it's a perfect opportunity to practice my macro shots.

It snowed again yesterday and seems spring is still a while away. I’ve been looking at Flickr friends’ photos and seeing all these beautiful images of crocuses and apple blossoms and I’m green with envy! I went into my files and found these two baby chicks from last year as my spring photo stand-ins. LOL

I started seeing this Cormorant at the park for the first time last year but he was always way too far out in the river for a good shot. This year I spotted him on the same log I saw my first merganser on earlier. I couldn't believe it! I doubt I'll ever get this close again! I was thrilled!

When I walk on the path by the river, I always stop whenever there is a clearing in the brush along the river’s edge and take a quick peak. This day I got lucky! I was so excited to come face to face with a little Green Heron standing there in front of me. No time to even adjust my camera, I just pointed and clicked and hoped one would turn out. A lifer for me!

I haven't seen any cardinals here since the fall. Maybe I'll see them again when winter food gets scarce. Took this photo last winter, hoping it will bring me some luck and we'll see them again.

Our resident red squirrel Dr. Sinister is not to happy with this young Grackle stealing his peanuts. I watched him chase him from the fence all through the apple tree. Who will win the battle of the peanuts?
Tina & the Puglets xo
The temperature here has been averaging about -30℃ or colder for the past week. It was so comical watching this poor chickadee try to grab hold of a peanut, they kept sliding out of his little beak. I hope things warm up soon. I haven't seen many animals venturing out for food lately and I'm worried for them.

I've been trying to get a photo of one for the longest time. They are so skittish around here and fly away to the top of the tree every time I try to get close. I wish it hadn't been such a gloomy day and was a better shot, but beggars can't be choosers. LOL

The other morning I looked out the window at the squirrel house in the apple tree and I couldn’t believe my eyes! I saw what I think is an Eastern Screech Owl perched in the opening of the house basking in the sunshine. I have never seen an owl before! I think he was just roosting and seemed like he was half asleep. I grabbed the camera and was able to get a photo.
I hope he doesn’t have squirrel and chipmunk on the menu! LOL
He seemed so small, maybe he’ll go after smaller prey than our resident red squirrel Dr. Sinister and our little Chippy. They might be in for some trouble!

Little female mallard Duck. Had to take a photo from my files last summer. I haven't been able to take many photos this winter with the terrible weather. At least the temperature has warmed up but the snow just does not want to stop coming. So far for the month of February we've had 61cm of snow!

What a difference from yesterday. Woke up this morning to a cold -31°C with the wind chill here in Ottawa. The temperature is supposed to rise today and tomorrow and then back to the bitter cold for the weekend. This black squirrel had frozen whiskers, glad he has a thick coat to keep him warm.

Two things I need a lot of practice on in photography are birds in flight and macro shots. I have always admired the beautiful birds in flight shots I’ve seen here on Flickr. I just never realized just how difficult it was going to be until I started practicing them. My photos were always blurry and the birds were never properly in frame. The other day I was practicing on seagulls and I got lucky when a great blue heron flew by unexpectedly, needless to say, I wasn’t prepared. LOL I just clicked away like a maniac and crossed my fingers that I could get some half decent shots. My great respect to all the photographers that take those amazing flight photos!

I should call it the snoozing tree! LOL It's been so hot and humid lately. Today the squirrels and birds were all trying to escape the heat. Stay cool Flickr friends!

Another first for me! I went down to the local park yesterday and I saw this bird far out in the middle of the river. I had never seen one before. I hope he returns so I can try and go back and get some better, closer photos. What a treat it was to spot this beautiful Hooded Merganser.

I've never gotten this close to a Nuthatch. This guy was taking a break from the heat in the apple tree and didn't notice me standing beside him. I stood on my tip toes trying not to get that bottom branch in the photo. Then I guess I moved too much because he saw me and flew off. But at least I got a shot! LOL

I’ve been seeing a lot of firsts this year. Maybe it’s because I’ve taken the advice of a few Flickr friends that told me I had to start getting out more! You all know who you are ;) LOL
The other day I decided to go into a more brushy part near the river. When I finally got through all the branches I came face to face with this Great Blue Heron. I have never seen one that close! I was so surprised my hands were shaking. I managed to get a couple of quick shots before he spotted me and took off. I’m full of mosquito bites, but boy was it worth it!

Please spill your macro secrets!
I have gotten some wonderful advice from a few Flickr friends on macro tips but I am still struggling. My camera is a Nikon D-3100 and the only lenses I have are an 18-55mm and a 70-300mm. I also have an old tripod. Ideally I know a macro lens would be best but not in my budget right now. I want to know what is in your bag of tricks to achieve those amazing shots I’ve seen! Also, to crop or not to crop?
And if anyone has advice on the best butterfly attracting flowers, I’d love to know. I greatly appreciate any tips to help improve on my nemesis, “the macro shot”. LOL

I think this gull made his own rudder as he was blowing along down the river.
I've seen so many beautiful shots I admire from friends on Flickr where they have these amazing perspective of birds on the water. So I crouched as low as I could and my camera almost got dunked. LOL

I finally got a shot of a chickadee where the eyes don't look like pure black dots. It's too bad about the shadows from the branches. I'm just happy I can finally see a Chickadee pupil! LOL

During my hike I spotted a mother mallard duck keeping her ducklings warm. Summer has finally arrived in Ottawa. We went from freezing to a heat wave in a matter of a few weeks!

I had to go all ‘Ninja’ and stalk this guy along the shoreline. He kept hiding behind the reeds so I couldn’t get a shot. Then I got lucky and he hopped up on this rock. I was so happy to finally get a photo of a Red-winged blackbird!

I think Boo Lefou is glad that Fall has arrived. I’m hoping he’ll get some relief from his allergies. You can see in this photo the skin in the corner of his eyes is still swollen. When he has flare ups he gets all red under the eyes and in the folds around the nose. I have him on a special diet and he takes the medicine Apoquel which he’ll probably be on for life.

Saw this beautiful painted turtle yesterday sunning himself on a log. He was far away behind a bunch of reeds so I kept creeping closer, hiding behind the reeds in front of him. I got a soaker in my rubber boots and was sinking in the mud. But it was worth it! I was close enough to get a few shots before he noticed me and jumped into the water.

The other day I saw a pileated woodpecker on a telephone pole across the street. I had only spotted one twice before. I ran and grabbed the camera and chased after him around the neighbourhood like a mad woman! LOL I got lucky and he stopped at another pole and a stump to hunt for food. I was thrilled to get a few shots of this beauty.

I was so surprised to see this poor baby bunny being chased by a cat into our backyard one morning. I rushed out and shooed the cat away. The bunny was so frightened he didn't move for a few minutes, enough time for me to get a couple of photos of him before he ran away.
