The mill in Bethlehem saw most of its operations cease in 1982 after the company reported a loss of $1.5 billion due to increased competition from foreign imports made with cheaper and less regulated labor and industry elsewhere in the world, as well as financial obligations to former workers via pensions. The company became profitable again in the late 1980s, but subsequently saw further losses in the 1990s, leading to most of its operations becoming fully shuttered in this decade. The Bethlehem Steel Mill, which had produced steel used in so many iconic 20th Century landmarks in the United States, finally ceased operations in 1995. The company was declared bankruptcy in 2001 owing to its decline and was subsequently dissolved, with its remaining assets being first merged into International Steel Group in 2003, then the Mittal Steel Company in 2005, then ArcelorMittal in 2006, and finally, Cleveland-Cliffs in 2020.
The former mill consists of multiple brick and stone buildings in varying conditions, most of which date to the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, which were once surrounded by now-removed newer structures that housed much of the operation of the steel mill by the time it closed. The buildings feature relatively simple footprints and rooflines, with many of the stone buildings featuring arched window and door openings and hipped roofs, and the brick buildings featuring rectangular window and door openings, roof monitors, and steel windows. However, large sections of the complex are in a state of serious disrepair, with major roof failure evident on many of the buildings, with large sections of metal and membrane roofing entirely missing, meaning that the buildings are seeing further interior deterioration. Though redevelopment efforts have been ongoing for some time, the buildings of the former steel mill will require extensive work to be adaptively reused for other purposes. In the meantime, many of them remain fenced off, overlooking the new buildings and activities on the site, with many having been built between 2011 and 2015.

Residences spread outward in both directions along the hillside. The story of Nuttallburg and its founder, John Nuttall, is a classic tale of the American dream.
Born in England in 1817, John Nuttall worked in mines—starting at age eleven—for most of two decades. He came to America in 1849. Working in a silk mill for seven years, Nuttall saved enough to pursue opening coal mines. With help from in-laws, he opened mines in western Pennsylvania. Successful, he learned of opportunity in New River Gorge, and opened mines here in 1873.
John Nuttall and his family prospered. When he died in 1897, the Nuttall family owned thousands of acres of land, operated profitable coal mines, and provided livelihood for hundreds of mine workers and their families. After John Nuttall's death, Nuttallburg lived on for 61 years until the mine closed for good in 1958.
THE NUTTALL FAMILY
John and Elizabeth Nuttall had three daughters and one son. The daughters all married, and their husbands and the Nuttall's son, Lawrence, managed and operated John Nuttall's mines. Lawrence and son-in-law Jackson Taylor came here to New River Gorge, the others stayed in Pennsylvania.

Preserving Their Heritage
To preserve Nuttallburg's heritage, the descendants of John Nuttall conveyed their Nuttallburg property to the National Park Service in 1998. Nuttallburg was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and today is preserved as part of New River Gorge National River.

Family history is much like a seed.
It starts with a person planted in a particular spot and soon enough, it becomes deeply rooted in its community, connecting to things around it and creating a legacy.
Take the DuPont family for example.
In Florida, it starts with a man named Josiah DuPont, who was the first DuPont to settle in the state.
And for the last 30 years, his descendants have researched the family tree from one generation to the next.
Planted in Florida
St. Augustine natives Fred and Jim DuPont were born in the 1940s. They are two of their parents' six children and descendents of Josiah's brother, Charles DuPont.
Since 1980, they have compiled extensive research on the DuPont family history, pulling them all the way back to 16th century France.
"I started at the library up in Washington when I first got into it in 1980," Jim said. "I was always interested, but I didn't have the time to research it until I got to Washington."
Their research revealed the DuPont name appeared in the Huguenot stronghold of Rouen, France.
After facing persecution, Abraham DuPont fled to London, where he became a British subject, allowing him to immigrate to what is now the United States.
Born in 1658, he settled down in New York in 1699 and married.
Abraham's grandson Josiah is who Fred and Jim found to be the first to arrive in Florida based on copies of Spanish land grants that dated back to the 1790s.
He and his family tried to settle on the lands provided by the grants but were driven off by Native Americans in 1801.
The following year, Josiah died from a fever leaving all of his land in Florida to be regranted.
Charles, Josiah's brother, had 11 children.
One of them was named Abraham, born in 1783.
In 1828, Abraham and his family moved to St. Augustine, where he died in 1857.
"We've been here ever since," Fred said.
Abraham was active in the St. Augustine community.
He owned properties that extended to the south from what is now the Flagler County line to the north end of Hammock and from the ocean to the Matanzas River.
He owned acres on the other side of the Matanzas River bordered by Pellicer Creek.
He also owned a house in St. Augustine that is near where Price's Barbershop is today.
Abraham was on the building committee for the Trinity Episcopal Church in 1830 and went on to be the mayor of St. Augustine in from 1842 to 1843.
Deepening the Roots
In research done in 2013, Fred and Jim explored the development of the DuPont Center.
It sits on some land remaining of the Spanish land grant and is at the intersection of U.S. 1 and County Road 206.
According to the two's research, the DuPont Center was originally a farm that was created when Cornelius DuPont, grandson of Abraham, and his wife purchased 40 acres of land in the 1900s.
Subsequently, the couple purchased 120 acres, for a total of 160 acres.
The farm was on both sides of what is now U.S. 1.
It got its name when Cornelius and his wife donated the right of way to the government for the highway to be expanded.
After the intersection was established as the DuPont Center, the family decided that gas stations, restaurants and a roadhouse were more profitable options than farming.
That area became a place for travelers to get gas, fill their bellies or even attend a Saturday night dance during the 1940s and 1950s.
"I can remember going there with my parents and the kids would be running around and the parents would be inside and it would be a great time," Fred said.
In 1947, W.D. DuPont Sr. and his two sons, Andrew and William, founded W.D. DuPont and Sons Construction Co.
W.D. retired in 1959 at the same time the company purchased 120 acres of land to build a factory for the manufacturing of DuPont Steel Buildings and to farm.
In 1970, as W.D. celebrated his birthday, family tragedy struck and his wife suddenly died of an aneurism.
That same year, his son was killed in a plane crash at the St. Augustine Airport, and W.D. died from what his relatives say was a broken heart.
W.D. and Sons folded in the late 1980s and the county bought the property.
Growing up with History
Many of the DuPont family members have good memories of their upbringing.
"It was a great way to grow up. We were all one big family, and we had our own identity," Fred said.
As a kid, he remembers 160 acres was divided among the family.
Beehives and sugar cane were grown on the property.
"When it was time to harvest, the whole family would go out there," Fred said. "Every year, the family was provided with cane sugar and honey."
Chris Delaporte is a DuPont descendent and said growing up DuPont gave him a sense of heritage.
"I was born in Orlando, but my earliest recollection of the DuPont family was going to Crescent Beach to visit my grandparents," he said. "All those great memories of hunting and fishing were with my family."
He said keeping track of the family history is key and he serves as president of the family's council. His mother is one of the oldest in the family.
"(We) create a legacy and something our heirs and the people who came behind us will have," he said. "The word-of-mouth thing can only go so far."
Jim said researching the family's history with his brother works out well for the both of them, and they're able to retain the memories.
"I've always believed you can only see as far ahead of you as you can see back, so I've been looking back, back, back," he said.
Fred says everyone still manages to keep in touch.
"All the families in the area come together and stay in touch with each other," he said.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF PAWTUCKET
The manufacture of cotton cloth never seems to have been a popular or profitable industry in Pawtucket until the last quarter of a century. There are now, however, two large concerns here that will compare favorably with any similar establishments elsewhere, namely, the Slater Cotton Co., with factories on Church and Main streets, started in 1869, and the United States Cotton Co., which began operation in 1883 in a large factory in Central Falls. The latter mill was built by Fales & Jenks in 1863, but was sold by that firm in 1865 to A. & W. Sprague, who greatly enlarged it, and operated it as a flax mill for several years. As this industry did not pay, the factory was converted into a cotton mill and was running as such at the time of the Sprague failure in 1873. The United States Cotton Co. also has a small factory on the east side, on Division Street, which was originally built in 1869 and operated by the Hope Thread Co. Each of these cotton companies employ over six hundred hands. Darius Goff began in 1840 the manufacture of cotton wadding and batting on the Palmer River in Rehoboth, but in 1847 removed to Pawtucket, and laid the foundations of the business from which the present great establishment of the Union Wadding Co. has grown. In 1861, in company with his eldest son, Darius L., and W. F. and F. C. Sayles, Mr. Goff began the manufacture of worsted braids. After various vicissitudes, fires and removals, the Sayles brothers withdrew from the firm. Mr. Goff and his son returned to Pawtucket, and in 1864 began to manufacture in the old Stone mill south of the bridge on the east side. The business increased and prospered. In 1872 the brick mill was erected and has since been enlarged and improved at various times. Mohair plush has also been made in the great factory since 1882. The works are entirely operated by water power, and are now conducted by Darius L. and Lyman B. Goff, the sons of Darius Goff, under the name of D. Goff & Sons. A unique industry, originating in Pawtucket, which has brought wealth to a few of its citizens and a livelihood to a great many, is the manufacture of haircloth. This was begun in 1856, but little success at first attended the effort. The members of the original company were Freeman Baxter, David and James Ryder and George L. and Alfred H. Littlefield. In 1858 Gen. Olney Arnold bought Mr. Baxter’s interest and Richard Ryder also became a partner. Finally, in 1861, Isaac C. Lindsley, who had been engaged in trying to perfect a loom to weave haircloth, succeeded in the attempt, and the company secured his patents and others, which gave it a monopoly of the manufacture. An incorporated company was organized May, 1861, with a capital of $100,000, under the name of the Pawtucket Hair Cloth Co. The capital was subsequently increased to $300,000, and afterwards to $500,000. David Ryder retired from the management in 1863, and Daniel G. Littlefield became superintendent and agent. Under his direction the large mill at Central Falls built in 1864, and the machinery was set up and arranged. When the business was first successfully started in Pawtucket only about a dozen operatives were employed, but the factory now gives constant work to from 125 to 150 hands. The haircloth loom is a wonderful piece of automatic machinery. By the action of the mechanism a single hair is selected and so placed as to be accurately woven into the fabric. Through Mr. Littlefield’s skill in management and in adjusting the machinery, and also because of the excellence of Mr. Lindsley’s invention, the company had the field to themselves, and the industry was very successful. The Strictest Discipline

Jesus did not say that everyone must cut off his right hand, but that “if your right hand causes you to sin” in your walk with Him, then it is better to “cut it off.” There are many things that are perfectly legitimate, but if you are going to concentrate on God you cannot do them. Your right hand is one of the best things you have, but Jesus says that if it hinders you in following His precepts, then “cut it off.” The principle taught here is the strictest discipline or lesson that ever hit humankind. When God changes you through regeneration, giving you new life through spiritual rebirth, your life initially has the characteristic of being maimed. There are a hundred and one things that you dare not do— things that would be sin for you, and would be recognized as sin by those who really know you. But the unspiritual people around you will say, “What’s so wrong with doing that? How absurd you are!” There has never yet been a saint who has not lived a maimed life initially. Yet it is better to enter into life maimed but lovely in God’s sight than to appear lovely to man’s eyes but lame to God’s. At first, Jesus Christ through His Spirit has to restrain you from doing a great many things that may be perfectly right for everyone else but not right for you. Yet, see that you don’t use your restrictions to criticize someone else. The Christian life is a maimed life initially, but in Matthew 5:48 Jesus gave us the picture of a perfectly well-rounded life— “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
