An interesting example from the 'representative samples' section of the Penrose Annual for 1935 showing what I suspect was a booklet cover - the BBC were avid publishers in the 'thirties of booklets to accompany radio series - but that oddly credits no artist or designer. The sample is printed on double cartridge paper made by John Galloway & Co Ltd at their Balerno Bank Paper Mills in Midlothian and the reproduction is from two-colour line blocks by Raithby, Lawrence & Co Ltd of Leicester and London.
In a print annual a fine example of the work of the Barmen printing concern of Carl Weddigen issued c.1929. Intended to sell the quality of their work it takes the form of an illustration by German commercial artist Carl Breuer-Courth (1884–1960) that smacks of the debauchery of 1920s Berlin! Interestingly, Breuer-Courth appears to have an illustrator of 'erotic' material. It is printed in four-colour photo-offset lithography.
Alphabet and Image was a relatively shortlived post-WW2 journal dealing with typography and the graphic arts and that was published by James Shand of the Shenval Press, under the editorship of Robert Harling. Eight issues were produced before the titles were 'split'. The production standards are, for austerity Britain, remarkably good and the feel is of other contemporaneous magazines such as Signature and Typography.
This full page advert is for Ilford's thin film half tone panchromatic plate that was used in certain printing processes. It uses a 'clean' typography, set at a variety of angles to draw the eye. Iford were the well known manufacturer's of cameras, films and film processes based in Ilford, London.
From an article on printing processes, and used to illustrate four-colour block process this staged photo of two London newspaper sellers by Yevonde. In those days London had a plethora of competing newspapers, especially evenings, and even I can recall the cry of "Star, News, Standard" all rolled together. For many years we've now suffered the monopoly of the ghastly Evening Standard.

This metal plate is a “stereotype” (or “stereo”) created from a paper mold or matrix known as a “flong” or a “mat” (short for matrix). Cartoonists’ art (or any art or photo) would be photographically exposed onto a plate that would be etched. That plate would be put under pressure with a fresh piece of dry flong to produce the first mold.
For syndication of newspaper photos, comics, ads, and other material, many flongs would be produced from a plate—sometimes many hundreds or even more. The flongs were then sent to newspapers, which first cast them as flat stereos. These flat plates were locked up in a page form with other elements, including slugs of type, headlines, ads, and other material.
The page form was then fed into a flong-making apparatus. That flong was finally put into a cylindrical casting machine to produce a metal hemisphere of a printing plate that would be locked onto a rotary press for high-speed newspaper printing.

This is a type height (0.918") stereotype plate of the comic strip Joe Palooka as appeared on May 8, 1942. The plate was cast from a flong at a newspaper, but it's a rare example of the type-height plate (which weighs nearly 6 pounds at 8 by 2.25 inches) not being melted down after the page was assembled, and *another* flong was made to cast the curved plate for printing. It’s unknown why this plate survived.

As a supplement to an article on "The newspaper of the future; will it be printed in two colours?" found in the Advertiser's Weekly for 5 November 1926 comes a series of examples of colour adverts in newspapers. This looks at the new technology that allowed a colour deck to be fitted to newspaper printing presses that allowed the addition of colour as seen here.
Three adverts are printed on news print and were produced especially for the Weekly by the Dutch daily newspaper "Algemeen Handelsblad" on their presses in Amsterdam/ One additional page of miniaturised adverts appears within the magazine proper and again these are of Dutch adverts.
The centre pages open to show an advert for Karel I Sigaren - Karel I Cigars. These were manufactured by the Dutch company founded by Henri van Abbe in 1900. In 1908 the works move to Gestel in Brabant near Eindhoven and unusually van Abbe decides to produce only one brand, Charles I, and to back it by a large advertising campaign. In the 1960s, as tobacco is no longer imported from the former Dutch colonies, the company seems to have struggled with alternative supplies. In 1969 it was sold to an American concern and in 1971 a huge fire seriously damages the factory. In recent years the remains have been demolished.
