Fallow deer are a medium to large sized deer. Fully grown males (bucks) stand at around 0.84 to 0.94m tall at the shoulder and weigh between 46 to 93kg.

Fully grown females (does) are 0.73 to 0.91m at the shoulder and weigh between 35 to 56kg. By comparison, an average adult man in Britain is 1.77m high and weighs 79kg.

Fallow deer have four main variations of coat:

Common – tan/fawn, with white spotting on flanks and white rump patch outlined with black horseshoe shaped border. Coat fades to a general grey colour during the winter

Menil – paler colouration with white spots year-round and a caramel horseshoe shape on rump

Melanistic – black, almost entirely black or chocolate coloured

White – white to pale sandy-coloured turning increasingly white with age (this is a true colour and not albino).

Fallow deer often have a distinctive black inverted horseshoe shape on their rumps, and a black stripe on their tails which are the longest of all British deer.

The Fallow deer is the only species in Britain with palmate antlers. These become full-sized after the deer are three/four years old and can reach up to 0.7m in length. Facially, their head is more elongated than some species with large angular ears.

Does and their young give short barks when alarmed. Bucks groan loudly during the breeding season.

Fallow deer leave large hoof prints (slots), about 6cm long in soft ground. Their feet are more elongated than Roe deer and are heavier, creating deeper prints

Last month we went hiking along the coast of Santa Cruz, California. At the lighthouse we met a group of people playing drums and juggling with fire. Santa Cruz has an old hippie feel; I like it - it's so different from the Silicon Valley.

I can't think of a better title but when looking at shots that I took of my city of Nottingham I once again remembered what I considered a case of inverted snobbery. I reminded Jonathan who does not take my side in this saying "it’s tough but you can't win so drop it " No support there then. I was born in Sneinton a suburb of Nottingham and attended Secondary school in the heart of Sneinton and when married lived on Windmill lane a two minute walk from Greens Windmill and all the four children I had were born in the house on Windmill lane which is THE very heart of Sneinton. I just did another check of the boundary map and just as I was informed by this eclectic group my present house is literally a cul de sac ( just to make this clear) on the wrong side of a boundary road. There is a group that make up The Sneinton Artists Quarter that have markets and stalls and events to market their various Arts. I print and frame my own photo's and asked to join this group. I was turned down flat as I live mere metres away on the wrong side of the street now :( Some times I am proud of where I was born and where all my mothers side of the family hailed from...I feel like the egg which was kicked out of the nest by a cuckoo lol...I know I am mixing metaphors but ' hey, I am accepted on Flickr and know my friends don't make distinctions like that ..Sue :)

Btw, you may find my use of a macro lens here odd...but it is still a prime lens and I like that length occasionally as it covers different options when I go into town...

dense fog this morning, the bluehour heralded no dawn just offered a blue blanket. I was alone entirely 5am on St Mary's beach save for the birds, not even the Lighthouse herself was visible. only 20 metres of causeway showing and the feeling was one of exceptional simplicity, serenity, and peace.

Have printed this both ways as I like the square that shows in the thumbnail too.

I love the time of sakura. It indicates the start of spring. These stairs are at the Upper House in Hakone Gardens, a Japanese garden in Saratoga, California.

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and pulled the curves.

We had nice clouds in the Silicon Valley. I headed to Alviso, hoping the clouds would light up at sunset, but that didn't pan out. After taking some shots in the marshland I drove through the town of Alviso. I am glad I stopped at this market. This is quite an unusual look for the Silicon Valley.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from two RAW long exposures, and reduced the color saturation for all but the store so that the eyes are drawn towards it.

Last November, a Swiss Airlines pilot who likes to fly small aircraft invited us to join a Bay Tour, a flight in a four seater Cessna 172 all over the San Francisco Bay in California. It was a perfect day for flying. The south bay has salt ponds with beautiful patterns and colors. This is near Facebook headquarters. See more photos of the Bay Tour at bit.ly/319JeYv

I processed a balanced, a photographic and a paintery HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Captured this with three RAW shots at -2..0..+2 EV. Digital blending in Photoshop CS6. I increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. 1 layer mask in soft light mode at 50% gray, using brush tool to lighten and darken some areas of the image, to bring out details. Topaz DeNoise to reduce noise. Topaz Clarity for boost in color and contrast.

Finished this top... over the summer sometime. There are 168 stars total - I planned to make closer to 220, but man I got sick of sewing these teeny stars. I started this quilt in 2010!

Each star is 4" finished with a 1" sashing. I didn't trim down most of the half-square triangles, so there's quite a bit of variance in the finished size of each star. It felt pretty sloppy during assembly, but I don't think it's as noticeable in the photos.

The other day we went to a nearby Chinese restaurant in Cupertino, California. While waiting for a table I snapped this out of focus shot with the f/0.95 dream lens.

I took this photo with the vintage Dream Lens at f/0.95, which produces this distinct bokeh. I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves.
