Le comité d’évaluation de la stratégie nationale de prévention et de lutte contre la pauvreté, présidé par Louis Schweitzer et piloté par France Stratégie, a tenu sa première réunion, le jeudi 3 octobre. The fourth and final safety drill exercise in Phalombe District, Malawi, focuses on protection — teaching students how to prevent, recognize, and report abuse or violence. Kondwani, a 16-years old student (in the middle), is part of the students leading this session.
One of the key mechanisms discussed is the Child Helpline (phone number 116), a toll-free service that children, parents, and community members can call to report cases of child abuse, violence, or neglect, or to seek counselling and support. The helpline is managed by Childline Malawi in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, with support from UNICEF and other partners.
The school is practicing four types of drills: fire, earthquake, flood, and protection scenarios. The activity helps children learn how to respond safely in emergencies, guided by clear sign boards and colored flags across the school grounds.
In Malawi, the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative led by the Government of Malawi and supported by GPE in partnership with UNESCO, UNESCO-IIEP, and Save the Children is helping build a more resilient education system. Through school safety drills, emergency preparedness training, and climate-smart planning, the programme equips schools and communities to protect children’s learning from the growing impacts of floods, droughts, and other climate-related hazards.
