Due to a stable high pressure area in the north of Europe the Netherlands suffered from strong and very cold winds from the east lasting for about a week. In times of climate change this has become a quite rare meteorological phenomenon. Because of the strong frost nights and moderate frost days the ice grew quickly in the smaller streams and canals of Holland.
During those rare occasions a lot of Dutch people get their skates from the attic and skate all day. Especially along canals with windmills this creates a beautiful setting for taking pictures. In this case the world heritage site of Kinderdijk in the south of Holland is photographed late in the afternoon on March the 3rd.

Ten gevolge van een stabiel hogedrukgebied in het noorden van Europa kreeg Nederland te maken met sterke en erg koude wind uit het oosten die ongeveer een week aanhielden. In tijden van klimaatverandering is dit een zeldzaam meteorologisch verschijnsel geworden. Vanwege de strenge vorst in de nachten en de matige tot lichte vorst overdag groeide het ijs snel in kleinere vaarten en kanalen van Holland.
Bij dergelijke zeldzame gebeurtenissen halen vele Nederlanders hun schaatsen van zolder om de hele dag te gaan schaatsen.
Met name op vaarten met windmolens levert dit prachte beelden op. In dit geval is het werelderfgoed Kinderdijk gefotografeerd laat in de middag op 3 maart.

The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.

Despite having Christmas on my own I had a fantastic day. An early morning zoom meeting watching my daughter and granddaughters opening presents, followed by the friendship of neighbours, then a fantastic muddy mountain bike ride to the coast, it felt wonderful to get some hard exercise . then another zoom meeting with my daughters, and lots of cooking to show my wonderful Italian friend Maura a traditional British Christmas dinner for our late night FaceTime Christmas special. Finally some dancing to Toots and The Maytals in a kilt :))))) Pressure Drop is by Toots and the Maytals. Sadly Toots Hibbert died to Covid last year, so sad, he was probably the most uplifting person I've ever seen perform at a gig. Pressure drop too after all my cooking exploits, just need to work out how to eat all this food :)))
These rocks have been smashed by waves like this ever since Bass Strait was flooded at the end of the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago. And we worry about miniscule rates of sea level change and tiny increases in temperature.

Oh boy, they're watching. Now I've got to nail this landing.
A pair on male Acorn Woodpeckers appear to be judging the other's landing. The one in the middle could likely be studying his techniques as he is only about a week out of the nest. The best way (other than awkwardness) to distinguish an immature one is the blue eyes. Only when they reach maturity do they develop their iconic bright yellow eyes.

A lovely evening spent at Cwm Nash, watching the tide drop and the sun set slowly, with beautiful shore platforms all around. We're off to see Toots and the Maytals tonight, which should be great , so it has to be a track of theirs, and Pressure Drop, always gives good photography so that's fine.
