Hansestadt Lübeck GER

The Salzspeicher (salt storehouses), of Lübeck, Germany, are six historic brick buildings on the Upper Trave River next to the Holstentor (the western city gate).

Built in the 16th–18th centuries, the houses stored salt that was mined near Lüneburg and brought to Lübeck over the Stecknitz Canal. The salt was then shipped to several ports in the Baltic region, where the commodity was relatively rare, but was in high demand for the preservation of food. The salt trade from the late Middle Ages onward was a major reason for the power of Lübeck and the Hanseatic League.

My first attempt at capturing this stone arch from an adjacent footbridge, had the sun reflecting too intensely down onto the brook. We tried again an hour later and the light was less severe. However, a steady stream of hikers wanting to cross the single file bridge had me frequently moving out of the way and every time someone set foot on it, the wooden structure moved. I finally crawled under the bridge to get this point of view. I'll have to try again on an overcast day when it's not so late in the year and much of the foliage is in full bloom.

The original mill, built here in the mid 19th century, ground lime in much the same way a grist mill produced grain. This arch is an original feature of the mill race and you really have to admire the masons that cut and fit the stones together to make it last this long. The Halton Hills Branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, strongly requests that people stay clear of the arch to assist in it’s preservation.

Valley of Fire State Park is a public recreation and nature preservation area covering nearly 46,000 acres (19,000 ha) located 16 miles (26 km) south of Overton, Nevada. The state park derives its name from red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. It is Nevada's oldest state park, as commemorated with Nevada Historical Marker #150. It was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.

Valley of Fire is located in the Mojave Desert 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 1,320–3,009 feet (402–917 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the east at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.

New Orleans’ Preservation Hall was established in 1961 to honor one of America’s truest art forms – Traditional New Orleans Jazz. Operating as a music venue, a touring band, and a non-profit organization, Preservation Hall continues its mission today as a cornerstone of New Orleans music and culture.

Situated in the heart of the French Quarter on St. Peter Street, the Preservation Hall venue presents intimate, acoustic New Orleans Jazz concerts over 350 nights a year featuring ensembles from a current collective of 100+ local master practitioners. On any given night, audiences bear joyful witness to the evolution of this venerable and living tradition.

The Longmen Grottoes (aka Longmen Caves) is a UNESCO–listed world heritage site which has thousands of statues of Buddha carved in caves excavated from its surrounding cliffs. Unfortunately, the site was subjected to significant vandalism and senseless destruction at several points in its history. Major artifacts were removed by Western collectors and souvenir hunters during the early 20th century and by the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The heads of many statues were also destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

The Chinese government has since recognized the cultural and tourist importance of the Longmen Grottoes and has been active engaged in the preservation and restoration of the site. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longmen_Grottoes

Eight years ago yesterday I had the chance to undertake what would be one of the most difficult air-to-air sorties I've ever attempted.

The challenge, as it transpired, was to shoot the Vampire Preservation Group Vampire T11 from a Cessna 150 with the door still in place! It would be fair to say that the window of opportunity was very small, even when the air brakes were out on the Vampire!

Far to the south in Fiordland NZ after a night of rain we woke to see mists rising as the sun gently warmed the forests. It was hard to break away to have breakfast.

Hope you are having a good weekend and thanks for visiting down-under where we have a warm version of Christmas in 3 weeks.

Misty fiord view,

Foggy veil hides the forest,

Sound whispers secrets.

The weathered wood door tells a rich story of New Orleans culture past in layers of colors. The layers like a period long gone, but influence built on top of influences to the present day.

Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, located in the eastern part of the country along the banks of the Kura River. The city has a rich history that spans over 1,500 years and has been influenced by various cultures and civilizations over the centuries. The old part of Tbilisi, known for its charming architecture and unique atmosphere, is one of the most fascinating areas of the city. One of the most striking features of this area is the traditional houses with wooden balconies. These wooden balconies, often adorned with intricate carvings, are a significant element of Tbilisi's urban aesthetic and culture. This old Tbilisi, also known as the Old Town or Dzveli Tbilisi, is one of the oldest parts of the city and has a rich history dating back to the 5th century. Over the centuries, Tbilisi has been influenced by Persian, Byzantine, Arab, and Russian cultures, which is evident in its diverse architectural styles. The houses with wooden balconies are typical of Tbilisi's traditional architectural style and reflect both Georgian and Persian influences. Perched on a steep hill overlooking Tbilisi’s Old Town and the Mtkvari River, Narikala Fortress is one of the city’s most iconic and historic landmarks. Dating back to the 4th century, this ancient fortress has seen the rise and fall of empires and has been a silent guardian of Tbilisi for centuries. Narikala’s origins date back to the founding of the city itself, with the first fortifications believed to have been built by the Persians in the 4th century. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and strengthened by various ruling powers, including the Umayyads in the 7th century, the Mongols in the 12th century, and later by Georgian kings. Within Narikala’s walls, you’ll find the restored St. Nicholas Church, originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 1990s. The church’s interior is decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from Georgian history and the Bible. Visitors can reach the fortress by taking a scenic walk through the old town or by taking the modern cable car from Rike Park.

Narikala Fortress, perched on a steep hill overlooking the old town of Tbilisi and the Mtkvari River, is one of the city's most iconic and historic landmarks. This ancient fortress, dating back to the 4th century, has witnessed the rise and fall of empires and has been a silent guardian of Tbilisi for centuries. The old part of Tbilisi below the fortress, with its characteristic houses featuring wooden balconies, offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the city. The baths in the city centre are an important historical and cultural attraction. These baths, known as the sulphur baths, have characteristic domed roofs, which are partly underground to keep the heat inside. Historically, the baths played an important role as social meeting places. People came here not only to bathe, but also to talk, relax and do business. These charming architectural elements are a must-see for anyone who wants to experience Tbilisi's rich traditions and unique heritage.

The building was originally the old Western Market (North Block), which was identified by Antiquities and Monuments Office as one Declared Monument in 1990. At present, it is the oldest market building surviving in Hong Kong. The former Land Development Corporation converted the market into a centre of traditional traders, arts and crafts in 1991 and renamed it as "the Western Market". The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) refurbished the Western Market again in 2003 and tried to bring it back to its useful economic life by adopting the so-called concept of adaptive-reuse...

At the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, inside the former B&O Passenger Car Shops lies a behemoth of a steam engine, only 1 of 2 examples that survived into preservation, the mighty Chesapeake & Ohio H-8 2-6-6-6 "Allegheny" steam engine #1604.

With a fleet of 45 of these giants, built between 1941-1944 for the war effort and another 15 built in 1948 to aid the post-war economic boom, these engines cost the C&O $392,500 a pop. Replacing the older 2-8-8-2 H-7 steam engines, the H-8 Allegheny's delivered on Lima's goal of the ultimate expression of steam locomotive “Superpower,” as seen by the 6 wheel rear axle to support the massive firebox. And with a successful career that these engines put in until the last fire was dropped in 1956, the only 2 issues of these locomotives was #1642 boiler explosion in 1953 and that Lima had miscalculated the Allegheny's engine weight, thus engine crews weren't paid properly (paid based on the weight on the engines drive wheels) so the C&O had to issue backpays and they subsequently sued Lima for over $3 million in 1944 because of that.

C&O 1604 survived into preservation, and even flooding, when it was originally stored at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, the engine almost overturned when the museum grounds flooded and the track underneath the engine became soft. Thankfully 1604 did not topple over and later Norfolk Southern did a cosmetic restoration to 1604 before it was moved up to Maryland where it was displayed as the centerpiece of the then Mount Clare Junction shopping center in 1987, then being donated to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum a little later in 1989, where it now resides.

In preservation, the locomotive has also worn the identities of a number of its scrapped classmates, including first of the A4 class 2509 Silver Link and most recently as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand as seen in this image taken on the line running through St Neots on its way from London to Edinburgh.
