More than 160 junior rifle athletes competed in the Precision Rifle event at the 2020 U.S. Army Junior Rifle National Championship at Fort Benning, Georgia today. The athletes, who came from 24 different states across the Country, competed side by side in the Precision competition, which consists of shooting 60 rounds from the standing position within 75 minutes. The U.S. Army Junior Rifle National Championship is organized and hosted annually by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit and the Civilian Marksmanship Program to promote the development of rifle marksmanship skills among American youth and to recognize those who respond to this challenge. The top 30 Precision and Sporter individuals and the top 30 teams in both disciplines were invited to Fort Benning for this championship event.

OPLEX 3.5/9cm Test Film
This is my first test on film of the rare OPLEX 3.5/9cm produced by Optique & Precision de Levallois SA (O.P.L. SA) French company for its range-finder camera FOCA. The long focal (90mm) lens was produced for both the « Universel » bayonet FOCA mount and also for the FOCA 36mm screw mount from production year 1948 to 1963 in different models and versions. The official end of O.P.L. SA of all the photo productions occurred in December 1964.
The « OPLEX » branding was specific of the last series of 3.5/9cm for the FOCA Universel with a specific black anodized finish (model-5). OPLEX 3.5/9cm is considered as a very rare lens of about 200 units only produced in 1962 and likely a hundred in 1963. I found this one by chance at the last photo fair of Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure, France, sept. 2025. The lens is in a pristine condition but a careful examination of the front three screws shows some marks, indicating that he lens was probably serviced in a more or less long past.
I mounted the OPLEX 3.5/9cm on my second FOCA Universel RC body for a test on film using a Rollei Superpan 200 (Agfa Aviphot 200). The Rollei Superpan 200 is the same film formula as the Agfa Aviphot 200, a super-panchromatic film further sensitized in the red and near infra-red up to 750nm. The film is coated on a clear polyester base (polyester teraphtalate, PET) with anti-halo layers that dissolve into the developer during the film process. This type of film is particularly efficient to differentiate the vegetal species and the clear in part the atmospheric haze and was used typically for aerial photography.
The film was exposed over two consecutive days on sept. 29 and 30, 2025 during two small hikes in the Mont d’Or massif next to Lyon city, France. The weather was pretty and clear and I used for all views the 42mm push-on FOCA yellow filter with given coef. x2.5. Expositions were metered for 100 ISO to compensate the light absorption of the yellow filter (not the x2.5 value). Metering was done using a Minolta Autometer III equipped with a 10° finder for selective measures privileging the shadow areas.

After the last view (Nr. 38) exposed, the film was fully rolled tback to the cartridge and was developed in a Paterson tank using 350 mL of Adox Adonal (Agfa Rodinal) developer prepared at the dilution 1+25 and the film processed for 8 min at 20°C.
Digitizing was made using a Sony A7 camera (ILCE-7, 24MP) held on a Minolta Auto Bellow III equipped with a Minolta Macro-Bellow lens 1:3.5 f=50mm and a Minolta slide duplicator. The light source was a LED panel CineStill Cine-lite.
The RAW files obtained were inverted within le latest version of Adobe LightRoom Classic (Version 14.5 of Aug. 2025) and edited to the final jpeg pictures without intermediate file. They are presented either as printed files with frame or the full size JPEG together with some documentary smartphone pictures.
The results show that the best infinite focus is not obtain for the normal infinite position of the lens, but instead shifted between the marks «10-20 m » on the distance scale. The origin of this shift is unknown and should be compensated. Using the depth-of-field scale, the real distance should be read at the mark « 22 » on the right.
