Students are able to choose where they sit in the centre taking into consideration where they want to be, the seating style they prefer, the lighting that suits them best, what they are going to do and for how long. Electricity points embedded into the seating allow laptop and other electrical equipment to be used. Drinks and snacks are allowed making this area both an informal social learning space and a more organised learning space.

Students can group together or work independently on work tables in the Learning Street.

This large area has been divided into small sections without cutting off the area. The visitor can still see through to the far corner. A mounted plasma screen provides information and interest.

Overhead power cables drop down from the ceiling in this multi-functional space. Practical hands-on experience and taught information is shared here at the beauty treatment tables section. All of the specialist beauty therapist furniture is on wheels/castors and could easily be rearranged or moved away completely giving the space flexibility.

The college is experimenting with the addition of a classroom style teaching space within the open plan, more 'hands-on', Construction Department space. The use of blended teaching and learning techniques can help embed knowledge at a deeper level. The design of this data projector from America means there is no need for ceiling mounting, as it has a wall mounted design it offers real flexibility in how and where it is used.

All teaching room equipment has one central control panel which is standardised throughout all the teaching rooms, this helps with familiarity. Electricity points are located in the floor space.

Collaborative work is being demonstrated in this classroom. Traditional tables and chairs are in the room together with plants to add colour. Large windows allow natural daylight to illuminate the room. Electrical powerpoints are provided. The classroom layout puts the tutor in the middle of the room rather than the front and allows students to face each other facilitating peer-to-peer learning.

The use of a ceiling mounted steel frame for the attachment of a variety of technology and non-technological items gives extra flexibility to this space.

Each lighting panel can be a different colour - this is one way used to create zones with the room.

A variety of furniture styles and colours make this an inviting location for informal study. Easy access to power is provided from the ceiling mounted extension cables. Wireless access the the world wide web is also provided. Flexible screens for reconfiguration of space give students some privacy and help absorb sound.

In this social space some colourful soft seating has been provided for informal study or chatting. The fabric covered seating has a small writing table attached which can be swung to the side out of the way when not needed. Full length windows and glass doors let natural light flood in.

Students have 24 hour access to books, PCs, soft seating areas and tables to work at in this building. A paper recycling bin is provided.

Social or peer-to-peer conversation can have a positive impact on learning. The availablility of informal areas such as cafés and social seating areas help students to engage in informal discussions which may lead to formulating ideas and strengthening understanding. Laptop use allows for blended learning.

The seating in this lecture theatre in the Student Learning Center is different from the usual bench type making it easier for students to use. Artificial lighting supplements the natural light from the large windows at the rear of the theatre. Electricity points are located in the desktop space.

Laptops in use throughout the college are charged up and transported in these portable cabinets. This allows them to be securely stored when not in use. White boards and electronic smart boards are available for staff and students in this teaching room. Posters on the walls add colour and information.

I lucked out getting the new business class configuration on the Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Sydney for my snoozing phase of the return journey. Completely flat bed, massage in-built in the chair, big screen tv, herringbone layout of the seats so no leaping required over the person next to you to go for a wander. Very comfy flying!

My other flights had the older configuration which have flat beds but they are positioned on a bit of a slope so you feel like you're sleeping (comfortably though) on a gentle hill.

Needless to say I'm not looking forward to going back to self-funded long-haul economy class international travel after getting a taste of such comfort!

This image of the hair and beauty salon shows the layout of the individual teaching/learning and work stations and their set-up which includes specialist equipment. Power cables are accessible through the ceiling reducing risk of tripping on trailing wires/cables or the need for a false floor. Each station has its own trolley for accessories. State-of-the-art drying / treatment hoods are provided, these are shown next to the large windows.

In this Blended Learning Unit teaching space large floor-to-ceiling windows allow not only natural light into the room but views outside. Long distance views can be important in providing tired eyes with some respite during hours of close-up work. Natural daylight can be stimulating and aid concentration. Openable windows allow fresh air (negative ions) into the room counteracting positive ions emitted from technical equipment. Negative ions promote feelings of wellbeing.

This group of seats is located just to the edge of the open plan collaboratory teaching and learning area. The provision of informal social spaces can help students feel comfortable in their surroundings and help to build relationships with fellow students. Learning through informal peer-to-peer conversation can help further embed knowledge taught in more formal situations.

A ceiling mounted projector, smart board and white board are available in this teaching room. Work tops are arranged in a circular fashion maximising group and/or collaborative work. Electricity points are located in convenient places around the room.

There is plenty of space for laptops with power sockets that can be flush with the desk when not in use. The area is wireless flooded.

These desks were in the original Scottish Parliament building but are now used in the Learning Resource Centre. Artwork is shown around the room adding inspirational splashes of colour. Electricity and ventilation points are shown in the floor space.

Power points are widely available throughout the space, including in the partitions found around study areas.

Students are able to exercise choice satisfying their preferred environment for self study; areas with different seating, light levels, noise levels, times of the day etc are offered to users. There are no restrictions for food and/or drink.

Informal group work/social areas with high quality furniture and technology are provided in this department. Informal study areas can play an important role in developing a clear understanding of complex concepts through informal discussions with peers.

A group work area has been set out here using soft tub-style chairs. Each chair has a small work surface attached that can be pulled into and pushed out of position whenever needed. The half-wall partition includes a clear 'window' section. The colours chosen for this area are coordinated and vibrant without being too bright. The light from the large windows can be controlled using the blinds.

Shaped and flexible space dividers provide areas for individual and/or group collaborative work without isolating the user or blocking the flow of the room.

This lab space has additional directional anglepoise-style spot lighting for task based close up jewellery work. The room has purpose built work benches, lamps positioned above the user are capable of directing light efficiently for left and right handed work. Walls are painted in a neutral tone to reflect the light within the room.

Electricity points are located in convenient locations in this teaching lab. Users of the room have use of a ceiling mounted projector and an electronic smart board.

Power points are conveniently located in accessible pop-up units in desk tops.

Lots of electricity points and wide tables are shown here in the Fashion Lab to accommodate specialist sewing machines. Staff and students have a bright stimulating environment to study and create their designs. An easy clean floor covering helps to keep the space tidy.

This view shows the steel frame on ceiling, this is usually used in a retail setting and this educational application of it is quite revolutionary. The structure allows flexible use of screens and electricity cables.

Posters and leaflets provide users with information. Security measures help control entry into the building and provide a sense of safety in the 24 hour access building. Low level shelving ensures access for all users of the area.

Around the Learning resource centre areas have been set up with social seating. Here some brightly coloured benches make a visual impact. Settings such as this are conducive to learning through conversation and peer-to-peer learning. Electricity and ventilation points are in floor space. Leaflets are available from a permanent display on the back wall.

This quiet reading room offers users of the library a space to read and/or study either independently or in small groups. The room is decorated and comfortably furnished with a variety of seating and tables to suit the needs of the user. Power points are conveniently located for electronic equipment and the room is fully wirelessly enabled.

Quick access points give students the opportunity to check the library catalogue and media archive stocks. Additional electrical points in the floor space give the staff flexibility when designing and redesigning the Learning Resource Centre space.

There are plenty of power sockets in the floor. There is a variety of colourful seating and tables. Splashes of colour in the flooring support the ethos of the space.

These touchdown desks have network and electricity points for quick access.
