A short while after taking this photo I witnessed something I had never seen before and hope never to witness again. There were 2 male Redstarts trying to claim this territory. There was a lot of chasing going on and all of a sudden one flew into the glass of the hide 2 of us were sitting in. The chaser just missed the glass. The one that hit the glass went to ground a little stunned and the chaser jumped straight on him and started trying to finish him by pecking violently at him. It was incredibly vicious pecking of the head and back and went on for some time. Slowly the victum stopped moving and the perpetrator flew off. The 2 of us watching from the hide were powerless to do anything becasue we couldn't reach the victim. There was no movement for several minutes although we could tell it was breathing. To our amazement it then tried to get to its feet but couldn't but it was moving its head to look around. After about a half hour it did manage to get to its feet and to our amazement eventually flew away. I really hope it survived its ordeal.

" I watched you fall apart and chased you to the end

I'm left with emptiness that words can not defend

You'll never know what I became because of you

Ten thousand promises, ten thousand ways to lose

And you held it all but you were careless to let it fall

You held it all and I was by your side, powerless

And you held it all but you were careless to let it fall

You held it all and I was by your side, powerless

Powerless

The power, ingenuity, and sheer beauty found in nature has always fascinated mankind. When we look at powerful ocean waves rolling in, we cannot help but feel small and powerless in comparison. Mighty trees in a vast forest inspire feelings of insignificance and awe. Animal mothers taking care of their young make us question the cruelty with which we sometimes treat one another. The truth is, nature can teach us many valuable lessons. It can also lead us to wonder, did this beautiful earth with all of its natural treasures come about by chance or was it created?

Furillen is gone.

The war is going on.

It's always happening somewhere.

Ukraine is not the only one. Wars are always going on all over the world.

I know that if I lament the stupidity of war here, the world will not change immediately.

Many people also know that they don't pay much attention to the words written here.

Some say that art is powerless against war.

But all I can do is make something and make a small voice.

Is it meaningless?

But I don't think people should be indifferent to being in a dangerous situation, exposed to sadness and fear.

Art may not match bullet, but indifference will destroy a lot more than missiles.

And the chain of sadness and hatred will be bigger and deeper, and will eventually swallow us too.

I don't want to stop making something, even if it doesn't make sense.

And I will continue to mutter peace in a small voice.

If I make something and you see it

And you make something and I see it

The small circle of ripples that spreads in this way may change the world little by little.

The Pacific Golden Plover is a rare visitor to North America, and certainly to the east coast.

This beautiful shorebird is just starting to come into his breeding plumage. They breed in western Alaska and Siberia and winters on islands across the Pacific Ocean, through southeast Asia, and to northeastern Africa. This is only the third record in New Jersey. What a thrill to not only see the bird, but to photograph it as well.

Deep within the heart has always known that there was freedom

Somehow breathed into the very soul of life

The prisoner, the powerless, the slave have always known it

There's something that keeps reaching for the sky

And even life begins because a baby fights for freedom

And songs we love to sing have freedom's theme

Some have walked through fire and flood to find a place of freedom

And some faced hell itself for freedom's dream

Let freedom ring wherever minds know what it means to be in chains

Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain

Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key

We can be free and we can sing, let freedom ring! --William Gaither

We can ignore it

Or fall victim to it

The perception can pass quickly

Or slow it's pace

Powerless against it

Find the time to breath

Accepting the fact

It will not stop

“Zen wants us to acquire an entirely new point of view whereby to look into the mysteries of life and the secrets of nature. This is because Zen has come to the definite conclusion that the ordinary logical process of reasoning is powerless to give final satisfaction to our deepest spiritual needs.”

Happy Tuesday ;-)

Lousiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark 06/2023

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is probably the most important museum for modern and contemporary art in Denmark.

It is located 35 kilometres north of Copenhagen in Humlebæk, directly on the shore of the Öresund. The museum buildings were designed by different architects and are located on a hillside site by the sea. All the buildings are directly connected to each other. The park facing Öresund and a garden with a lake on the west side are integral parts of the museum. Sculptures, landscape art and designed nature are coordinated with each other.

The artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset planned their work Powerless Structures, Fig. 11, for Louisiana’s Panorama Room in the South Wing. The work consists partly of the view from the Panorama Room that was already there: the sea, a few trees outermost in the visual field and the sky. And it also consists of an object that the artists have placed in the room: a white diving board, ready to use – and then again not. The big difference between the diving boards you see on holiday or at a swimming pool and this one is that the diving board is placed in a room at the Louisiana Museum. The view is real enough, but in the middle of the diving board, the thick pane of glass puts a stop to any further fantasies of jumping out into the blue. It is also a little too far to the water and a little too far down.

As in many of their works, Elmgreen & Dragset’s piece in Louisiana is based on a familiar object. But the meaning of the diving board has changed – partly because it has been placed somewhere else than where we expect to see it and partly because it has been deprived of its function.

Hello Everyone,

Most of you are probably aware that the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. It has become a symbol of the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people during the invasion by Russia. I can't tell you how many tears that I have shed as these brave people fight for their lives and their country. I do so hope and pray that the Ukrainians will prevail, but they need all the help that they can get.

Oftentimes we can feel quite powerless to do anything, but you CAN help the Ukrainians in the way of donations, no matter how big or small. There are many reputable organizations from which to choose and I have listed a few of them for your reference.

Take good care of yourselves and thank you for viewing this image.

The last week of February 2022, to me, was one of the darkest weeks in our collective world history.

On top of all the existing problems, critical issues, and pressing challenges the world is already facing, a completely unnecessary and avoidable war in Eastern Europe erupted. This event and the resulting humanitarian toll are complete anathema to me.

I am angry about the absurdity. I am concerned for my friends and contacts in Europe. I am stressed about the uncertainty of what might or might not occur in the short-term and long-term with the aggressor. I also feel useless and powerless to do anything to counter this...but I am heartened by the resolve and determination of the Ukrainians.

On Saturday morning, after all the terrible news that very few of us could ignore, I woke up to this scene from the balcony of my home in Seattle -- an auspicious dawn featuring Mount Rainier on the horizon. I can only hope to take the occurrence as something positive.

O Lord, how long shall I cry,

And You will not hear?

Even cry out to You, “Violence!”

And You will not save.

Why do You show me iniquity,

And cause me to see [b]trouble?

For plundering and violence are before me;

There is strife, and contention arises.

For the wicked surround the righteous;

I realise this is a very stark image - I chose it partly because it matches the tones of the video, but it also reflects my own feelings. This is also a tribute to my dear father who endured 5 years of treatment without hope of remission or recovery.

Not everything in life is nice and pretty, and I am amazed at his bravery and his willingness to carry on and be there for everyone - and in the end, though we were all powerless to help him with the illness, the care and love of those around him became the only thing that held any meaning and joy as all those things that once brought color to his life, were slowly let go. Miss you dad.
