This old steam locomotive was placed there as memorial to the time when the Xuhui riverside promenade and park (徐汇滨江公园) used to be a busy warehousing and cargo handling area.

The locomotive was made in 1987 by the Datong Locomotive Works (大同机车工厂). It is a 2-8-2 "JS" (建设, Jianshe = Construction), in the revised "B" specification, build no. 8145.

Of the "JS" in total 1,916 units were made in two production runs (not only at Datong), from 1957-1965 and again 1981 until the final end of production in 1988/9.
