A view from the South Shetlands, Antarctica

THE FIG AND PLUM TREE, in our garden , only feed the birds, rarely do we get to eat of the fruits.. This was taken in the darkest possible spot, and therefore of poor quality, but a bit different. My wife Chris and I have been feeding two families of Blackbirds, and they have become very tame, and even enter the cottage, and has given us so much joy and entertainment during these difficult times of near isolation.

The Laugavegur is a famous trekking route in South-West Iceland from the hot springs area of Landmannalaugar to the glacial valley of Þórsmörk . It is noted for the wide variety of landscapes on its 55 km (34 mi) path. The route is typically completed over 2–4 days with potential stops at the mountain huts at Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil and Emstrur. An ultramarathon is held on the route each July. It is possible to combine the trek with the Fimmvörðuháls route which goes over the pass from Þórsmörk to Skógar for an additional one or two days or an additional 25 km (16 mi). Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and Skógar are all reachable by bus during the summer. A bus from Hella connects with Álftavatn once a day during the summer.

It is possible that there was a church on this site in Saxon times, and it is known that a church was built here about 1250-70. The record of Rectors of Child Okeford Superior and of Child Okeford Inferior begins in 1297. In 1297 Galfrid de Stocks was presented to the Parish as priest, by his relative Roger de Stocks, who held the land under the King.

The old medieval church was largely knocked down in 1878 and a “new” church built. The new North Chancel Aisle, designed for 52 Sunday School children, was actually occupied by the new Organ. This was built to a specification set by Dr (later Sir) Arthur Sullivan. The Vestry, which had been in the Tower, was also moved to the new North Chancel Aisle, where it remains.

It would be possible to get this shot where I live HOWEVER that is not what happened.

The hawk is my shot that I took while out on a winter hike and although I do have trees like these around here, these particular trees are courtesy Unsplashed. I blended the two together for a little winter wonderland.

OutreTerre - La nuit de tous les possibles

N’ayez crainte…

Outland - Night of Mystery

Have no fear ... Despite what your eyes are telling you, you are not alone. Close your eyes and you will see …

In the world of Outland, the adventure does not take place outside of you, but within you; and reality is just one of the many possibilities that await you.

This place is called Sautauriski, where, according to a legend, the ancestors of the North gather during the long nights of the full moon, in winter.

Do not ask me for advice before advancing on this frozen river. There are no sure rules or methods of coming into contact with those who have populated the myths, tales and legends of so many generations of humans.

It's an enchanted world, a night of all possibilities.

O inevitável cotidiano / The inevitable daily

The inevitable daily

Collection: The poetry of invisible movements

It is inevitable, points of conflict, lines of organization and insurrection, invisibility. Time passes... over.

A look, a step, a gesture, the lines of the city or any detail, completed by the look, creating a poetics in the movements that only exist in the encounter between bodies, photographer, place, people photographed and who sees the photo, and this can generate a power of presence, a static dance.

This is another typical farm house in Azumino Valley with cedar woods for windbreak. This photo was taken in Matsukawa village, a few km south of the previous photo.

Dispersed settlement is a characteristic of western part of Azumino Valley where the development was relatively new compared with the eastern part where settlements are older and agglomerated. It is thanks to the improvement of security conditions along with the progress of flood control techniques in the Edo period (17th to 19th century), which made it possible to convert the flood plains to rice paddy.

Not 100% sure but I suspect it's ticks that are damaging the birds eyes, if you zoom in just under the eye there's something that looks like a fresh tick. Sorry Jean Marie but your comment made sense, I think you are right it's the ticks that's damaging the eyes..

Description in English, German and Dutch

English:

During my walk from Murnau to Ohlstadt in Bavaria I walked along the Loisach river. The Loisach is a tributary of the Isar and the Isar is a tributary of the world famous Danube. Some parts of the river have a beautiful blue-green color. I decided to get off the trail to get a closer look at the river. When I got close to the current I was enchanted by the beauty of the water and the green surroundings. I was all alone, because the spot I had chosen is not known by tourists, but it is very beautiful. On the waterfront I decided to take some pictures first and then turn my phone off completely. No distraction for a while. With my pants pulled up I walked barefoot into the clear water and that was very cooling on this sun-drenched warm summer day. Staring at the impressive mountains of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, I then stood in the shallow part of the river and decided to close my eyes and think about nothing for a while. It was another special experience in beautiful Bavaria where I experienced a moment of satisfaction and ultimate peace in one of the most beautiful tributaries of the world. All my beautiful experiences of recent times have been made possible by the 9 euro ticket. Unfortunately, everything comes to an end and August 31 was the last day that the ticket could be used. I used it for three months. Only 27 euros for travelling in thee months. Sweet 9 euro ticket, it was an honor to carry you with me in the summer period. I miss you already, but the memories will last forever in the form of my photos. There will therefore be a lot of pictures here on Flickr of my adventures in Germany.

Deutsch:

Even geen afleiding.

Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies can survive Winter and often do. As such they're among the first Flyers out in Spring. But I doubt whether the Tortoiseshell I saw this afternoon will survive long. One of its wings has been severely damaged either in a possible Winter bivouac or by a hungry animal of prey. It did, however, happily flutter away when I came too close to that Viburnum cluster.

It’s still possible in these mesh-charged days in Second Life to get a perfect gorgeous gown that’s still essentially an old-fashioned flex offering, and here’s a brand new example from Sascha’s Designs. Though the basic dress is mesh, all of the trimmings are decidedly flex and move and float with your body in a frankly adorable way! The beautiful hair is the new offering from D!va at the current C88.

Happy Monochrome Thursday ;-))

This is the first image in a two-frame sequence: This wee four-day-old piping plover had been hunting for insects on the beach when it suddenly stopped and began scratching at its beak. Finally, one last swipe as it flung a tiny bug to the ground. You can see it a little if you zoom in on this first image. The second image is the very next frame, post-extraction. Perhaps that’s one of the hazards of hunting live insects. They're not always cooperative when you're trying to eat them. I had been alone with them, laying as flat and unobtrusive as possible when this one came super close to where I laid. July 11, 2019

As the name suggests, the Marsh Harrier lives in wetland habitats. They are a success story now after being extinct in Britain in the 19th Century. Since the first pairs bred in 1971 in Suffolk they have increased very well indeed, as has the wetland management on which they depend. It is now a regular sight to see these wonderful large harriers hunting over our marshes. I photographed this one locally, something that I would not have thought possible only 30 years ago.

Thank you for having a look at my photos. Comments or faves are very welcome and much appreciated.

Winter is a lean time for me to find lots of neat nature subjects to photograph so here's a scene from work today. My co-workers who are all specially trained to fight wildfires are conducting a controlled burn in a small waterway that has a large population of reed canary grass. Reed canary grass is aggressive, invasive and non-native here in Iowa where it chokes out our valuable native grasses and sedges in settings like this. Reed canary grass has practically no value for birds and wildlife and is essentially a flora & fauna diversity desert. Reed canary grass is very difficult to control by conventional means - spraying, mowing, spring burns - but some recent research suggests that a winter burn, if possible, might really set it back some. I guess we'll see next summer.

Coming from southeast Texas where we pretty much get one species of hummingbird it is thrilling to visit Costa Rica where there are around 50 species possible. Many of those species are elaborately colored like this Purple-throated Mountain-gem that we photographed this past March in the Monteverde area. On this particular day we wrapped things up at a coffee shop with a bunch of feeders swarming with hummers. What a way to finish a great day of bird photography!

Have a wonderful Sunday.

I didn't have the right camera or lens to capture this amazing spring properly. Even if I did - the wind was blowing steam right over the boardwalk and it wasn't possible to capture it. So you need the right gear and the right moment and weather conditions to capture this place. With that being said, it was still one of the coolest places in the part and you can see why it is so popular.

Seen crossing the Connoquenessing Creek at Ellwood City is an eastbound B&P freight (NCRI or NCBT, I can't remember). Just enough light was present on this October evening to make the shot possible.

A new bird joins my Flickr gallery..

The speckled accentor is the size of the familiar robin, but not the look.

It is reminiscent of a sparrow by its warm brown coat marked with black, hence possible confusion, but it is immediately distinguished by the finesse of its beak.
