Look closely, this photo shows the bridging of the gap of technology vs old school. The ipad and iphone are running apps by Positive Grid which are tube amp and effects simulations. The tones and sounds from these apps are incredible.
This was a little pick me up that I got for my birthday last year, which arrived (finally) yesterday and actually had a wee play with today. It is a Positive Grid Spark 40 amp and it absolutely blows the Yamaha THR30 out of the water!
And that is before the funky stuff it can do - such as playing Spotify tunes with a chord progression on your phone, crazy digital modelling of real world rigs, dynamically creating a backing track to your noodlings and even being a bog standard Bluetooth speaker.
It is a bit awesome.
