Back in the days when nearly all men wore a hat this little Portable Hat Brush kept the hat in tip top condition :)

It measures 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches and was possibly kept in a wallet or top pocket. Natural bristles held in a thin leather pouch. Circa 1930's.

I had been doing some photography from a portable hide in the garden when I decided to go in for some lunch. Within 5 minutes of me going in I saw this bird from the kitchen window. At this point my camera was still in the middle of the lawn ! Twenty minutes later the bird was still there so I resigned myself to going out and disturbing it. Despite this I managed to creep up to the hide, unzip it, get in and then fire off a hundred shots or so while the bird sat there preening itself. I still cant believe I got away with it.

On the right is a carbide lamp Invented in 1892. Carbide lamps are simple devices that produce and burn acetylene which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide with water.

Acetylene gas lamps like this one were worn on the hat or carried by hand and were widely used in mining in the early twentieth century.

To operate, calcium carbide is placed in a lower chamber called the generator. The upper reservoir is then filled with water. A threaded valve or other mechanism is used to control the rate at which the water is allowed to drip into the chamber containing the calcium carbide. The gas is ignited from a flint spark caused by turning the wheel on the reflector.

On the left are two LED flashlights. To operate, push a button.

I do not know which is harder: using a lighter with your left hand or using a camera with your left hand.

I do not know about this one. I just know that I feel ill.

“here was the secret of happiness, about which philosophers had disputed for so many ages, at once discovered; happiness might now be bought for a penny, and carried in the waistcoat-pocket; portable ecstasies might be had corked up in a pint-bottle; and peace of mind could be sent down by the mail.”

Truck Thursday

There was a major paving job going on in this area when I snapped this photo.

Philip Banks cracked out two of his strobes to shoot nighttime roster shots of the ex-Chessie GP15T's in Seneca, IL. While Phil shot at a blistering 1/250th of a second I used his lights as fill-flash to paint this 20 second exposure.

I found a basket not to get used to in the waterside that duck always walked. A gentleman of the friends of this cat was very cooperative with my photography and suggested to take it more.

About the eye: The eye under the sunglasses is called "Glotzer" and consists of fruit gum.
