Back in the days when nearly all men wore a hat this little Portable Hat Brush kept the hat in tip top condition :)
It measures 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches and was possibly kept in a wallet or top pocket. Natural bristles held in a thin leather pouch. Circa 1930's.

Work lights from different eras.
On the right is a carbide lamp Invented in 1892. Carbide lamps are simple devices that produce and burn acetylene which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide with water.
Acetylene gas lamps like this one were worn on the hat or carried by hand and were widely used in mining in the early twentieth century.
To operate, calcium carbide is placed in a lower chamber called the generator. The upper reservoir is then filled with water. A threaded valve or other mechanism is used to control the rate at which the water is allowed to drip into the chamber containing the calcium carbide. The gas is ignited from a flint spark caused by turning the wheel on the reflector.
On the left are two LED flashlights. To operate, push a button.

I do not know which is harder: using a lighter with your left hand or using a camera with your left hand.
I do not know about this one. I just know that I feel ill.
“here was the secret of happiness, about which philosophers had disputed for so many ages, at once discovered; happiness might now be bought for a penny, and carried in the waistcoat-pocket; portable ecstasies might be had corked up in a pint-bottle; and peace of mind could be sent down by the mail.”

Philip Banks cracked out two of his strobes to shoot nighttime roster shots of the ex-Chessie GP15T's in Seneca, IL. While Phil shot at a blistering 1/250th of a second I used his lights as fill-flash to paint this 20 second exposure.

ca. 1870-1880. This print decorates the shed lid of an old trunk I came across at an estate sale today.
I found a basket not to get used to in the waterside that duck always walked. A gentleman of the friends of this cat was very cooperative with my photography and suggested to take it more.

Just needed a little height to include the CN family of power sitting in the Car Works as NS southbound 145 rolls towards TRRA Madison Yard. CN / GT power is for the nightly TRRA to Centralia local as well as power staged for work at Quality Rail (located in the background).
