MARSYAS (BODY/HISTORY, detail of diptych)
Wood panel, gesso, acrylic, colored pencil
80" x 48"
Below is the transcription of the handwritten voice of MARSYAS (Body/History) on the panel above:
Subsequent to the completion of STUDIO SECTION 2002-2005, Marsyas/Myself, the artist created another studio section, STUDIO SECTION 2005-2007, The Seven Deadly Sins and Three Diptychs from The Winter Notebooks. On Pages 7 and 8 of The Winter Notebooks he reprised MARSYAS/MYSELF in retrospect visual and verbal consideration and wrote the following excerpt about it:
"Marsyas/Myself was completed in 2005 and entered into the permanent collection of the Crocker Art Museum in November of that same year. My three year involvement with this studio section was epiphanic and liberating, the separation nearly complete. However, the song of the artist, the skin of Marsyas, hangs heavy and will not be silenced. It lingers still, as Myself lingers still, and will not be silenced. As long as artists create artifacts and as long as viewers persist in creating Art from these artifacts, the myth of Marsyas is the truth of the artist; his life, his pain, his ecstasy, and his fate. By subjection of myself as a particular artist in equation with the corpus of Marsyas, an attempt was made to recast the drama of art into an anti-fascisttic and non-authoritarian process; a complete reassignment of roles wherein the viewer becomes the sole creator of Art and all else is cultural rhetoric. It was also an attempt by this artist at total honesty. As we know virtually nothing about Marsyas, it was my intention to reveal everything about Myself even to the extent of confessional boredom. All information has been made available to the viewer. Setting the plight of Marsyas in his challenge of Apollo within the context of a contemporary sculptor’s studio establishes the parallel of the cautionary myth with all artists who would gamble their lives on a rigged contest. There is no drama greater than the artist’s struggle with his own mortality. The transmutation of mortal desire into material artifact into immortal response is the distinguishing principal of humanity and it is the artist who personifies this principal in its sublime purity. No challenge is greater, no reality more intense. Marsyas is the artist’s myth and it is to this myth all artists conform…."
STUDIO SECTION 2002-2005, Marsyas/Myself is a multi-part installation work that requires a space approximately 40' x 40' for exhibition in its entirety. It consists of free-standing sculptures, and large panels hanging on the walls and a combination of these and evenly divided into two metaphorical dimensions: "Marsyas" and "Myself."

BODY/HISTORY
"I am Marsyas, a Phrygian of ancient myth, sometime satyr—but that is my skin’s tale. Appearances are not examined here. They were stripped away. I am that which lies beneath the surface of recognition—the instigator of myths and rituals. I am cloaked and covered with skins and skeins of acceptability. Metaphors envelop me to protect from blinding reflection. I am truth, that which lies within and without. That which lies between is for the consideration of others. I am. I am Isness. No tropes intercede on my behalf. These are the inventions of artists and others—poets, even, who sing their songs of civilization. It is they who seek me out flaying and restructuring my acceptability. How amusing. They, too, are a part of Isness. Like a snake, I shed them when their season subsides. Even the gods do not prevail for they, too, are metaphors invented for the protection of men. Examine my myth. Obviously, it is an instruction against hubris: skin stretched tight over the blinding darkness. But it is my skin and only my skin that bears witness to my awful fate. I languish forgotten within the beads of history. This is the unbearable truth. To be and be no more. A momentary presence in the abiding now. To be not unique. A mere thread in the constant fabric where-in only time prevents oblivion. And when this skin is stripped away...this metaphor called Time...the face of nothingness, the body of truth is bared. Few can witness this flaying. Few can accept the void—the nothingness of it all—and create metaphors out of human compassion. To lie and make bearable the continuum. To lie and have the courage to lie and the will to lie. This is for the living. But I am dead, my skin taken, my body set aside. I have nothing more to lose. I will speak for myself. I will speak for Marsyas. I will speak for memory which is neither metaphor nor history. I will speak for myself...my life and my death. Compassion is no longer required of me or for me. I have sung my song and been flayed for it. My skin holds the audience. I speak for myself. I was an artist, a composer and performer of song. The flute was my instrument, a voice of surpassing beauty. Tooled by my hand, controlled by my lung, I could sweep the breezes of the plain through the boughs of the treetops. Air was my medium, invisible and inclusive. Bird song and cat purr were mine. the rustle of grass and the gale in the boughs. I knew them all. No sound escaped my mimicry. Nothing moved outside my song. My song was my life and my life was my song. I and it were one. We were inseparable. Never did I not sing with the most beautiful ringing clarity. Never a false note. Never an unpleasing line. Everyone loved me. My audience was legion. My sound was legendary. Through my flute came the song of Marsyas. Through my song came the voice of Marsyas. Through my voice came the soul of Marsyas. My song was my soul and my life was my song. We were inseparable. I was born with my song and with me my song would die. I and it were one. Admittedly, there were some few who envied me, some few who rumored that I had stolen the flute of Athena, some few who questioned the authority and authenticity of my song, the pitch and precision of my voice, the breadth and profundity of my soul. Jealous and petty carpers all! Would be critics and has been artists—these were not my audience. I did not seek their applause. My song fed and clothed me. I was splendid, I was magnificent, I was famous, invited here and there and thither and yon. Kings and rulers were my audience and as I became ever more renowned, my song was fashioned for their ears and pocketbooks only. Soon, most who once had heard me now heard only of me and I became ever more celebrated and admired. I felt the gods were with me. Why else this good fortune and fame? I was Dionysian and it was during the Dionysia that my flute excelled. As the cult spread from region to region so, too, my song. Soon even Apollo took note of me. I shined in the sun. My brilliance was unparalleled. Truly, I was blessed by the gods. Favored by Dionysus under the golden reign of Apollo, my flute thrilled with the power of Athena. My legend grew. I was without peer. Still, my detractors persisted. Others, of course, had their voice. Others had their song. Some even satirized me. Often they were ostracized for their presumption. Though others had their voice and had their song, increasingly they had no audience. Few ears received their carping, fewer voices extended their song. It was I who flourished within the wide and broading smile of the gods. As renown broadened, my fame intensified. It became palpable. I could sense myself enclosed, obtected. Fame began to have a life of its own. I could sense it expanding and contracting me in respiration. I was becoming other, something bigger, harder, brighter. A diamond, perhaps, or some other valued decoration. The sensation was not unpleasant. I was, in fact, euphoric. I began to hear my song. Does this surprise you? This is what fame does. It separates the artist from his song. This is the first cut and, as the blade cuts deeper, his voice follows and then his soul. This was my fate and my instruction. But I am premature. My tale should not be hastened. I must do justice to my half of this duet else our song will not be balanced. When I first began to hear my song, I was startled. It was sublime with a clarity and perfection that made me weep that it was mine. I understood my adulation and recognized the capacity of my audience for I, too, had become audience. When my song was in me and of me, it emanated through the pores. It was humble and enfolded when embraced. It required no audience but when acknowledged, it enfolded if embraced. Its acceptance was its significance. It had no other. It simply was, without patronizing or pandering. It simply was. It was my song, and it was my voice and my soul, and little did I know that through fame my flaying had begun. I had recognized my audience and by so doing acknowledged its power over me. My flaying had begun. A confusion between what I was and who I was began to occur. My very arrival at the dionysia sent multitudes of celebrants into a frenzy. They cheered and whistled causing noise to infuscate the brilliant clarity of my song. Though first annoyed by this interference, I came to see it as acclaim. I not only accepted it but began to expect it and to anticipate the pleasure of tribute to my greatness and artistry. I was a god. Poor Marsyas! What a fool I was. My hunger for fame had led me into the barren contradictions of celebrity. My song, the skin of me, became poreless and opaque. Still, the flaying continued. The blade cut deeper. My pleasure was unsubdued. I was adored. I was worshiped. I was the most celebrated of every celebration. Celebrity of celebrities, I was Marsyas whose song rivaled the harp of Apollo. As my song receded into the anthem of celebrity, my voice was called forth in exploitation. I began to view myself as an artist rather than a mere crafter of song. Other forms of expression began to present themselves. Painting and sculpture were my next fields to cultivate and from these, too, I harvested applause. No matter what the endeavor, my celebrity guaranteed the expansion of fame. My voice was heard and cheered and celebrated while others were relegated to a dimmer light of accomplishment. My power was unsurpassed. I was without peer. There was nothing I could not do—except fail. Voices of resentment grew louder but they, too, were drowned out by the anthem of celebrity. My voice was suspended and carried forth on the surge of the multitude. I had no peer. People fought to stand by me hoping that my glow would burnish their image. These were my strongest supporters. They shielded me from the voices of detraction. I became deafened by fame and could no longer hear my voice. I began to mouth words and still the cheers increased. Numbed and muted, shorn of voice; and stripped of song, the flaying continued. I was cut to the soul. Too late. Too late I realized why the multitudes cheered, why they clapped their hands. It is the noise. It was the noise that stole my song. They were afraid. They fear the silence. And as I admitted their noise, my soul was bared by it. It was I who flayed Marsyas."
Zodiac Signs Makeup - ⛎ Pisces 12/12 ⛎

A little bit more than a year ago I attempted to make it to the NYX Face Awards Top 30 with a Pisces makeup. I did not make it 😅. But my pisces makeup was the first of a 12 months makeup series inspired by Zodiac Signs, planets, mythology & other magical things !
It took me a long time to create this second edition of Pisces, partly because the end of something is always a bit sad (although it's also the start of something new 👍😌!) but mostly because I needed to make props with worbla for this makeup, and I'd never used worbla before!! So I was fucking scared, to tell you the truth . My props are not perfect, far from it 😑... but there's a first to everything and I only had a few hours yesterday afternoon to make them ! Worbla is so awesome. I'm going to make a Link sword !!! and a shit ton of crows and tiaras.... but anyway !! I hope you like this last zodiac makeup, I'll let my brain rest for a while (like a couple hours 😂) and I'll pick a new series for the next 12 months!!

🌱Spring always makes my heart sing. There's the first flights of cranes, caressing our rooftops in a V formation... Fascinating spectacle ! There's the first flowers, piercing through the snow and sparkling the sleepy ground with yellow, white, pink and purple. But my favorite are plum, peach and cherry blossoms... trees put on their most beautiful outfit and are ready for the ball !🌱

I used to say "Pokemon?!! I'll never watch this ! It looks so dumb and childish..." But there's a French proverb that says "only idiots won't change their mind" so I guess I'm smart after all! My husband MADE me watch my first Pokemon movie a few months ago and I just couldn't resist the cuteness of it. Since then I've finished AAAALL of the tv shows and movies on netflix =(... even bought the game for the switch.... and ended up doing this Pikachu bodypaint. With a twist, all right.

A simple way to distinguish Yabbies (Cherax species) from burrowing crayfish (Engaeus species) is by the way they hold their claws. Superficially many species in the two genera can look similar, however Yabbies hold the claws flat, therefore able to see both fingers of the claw from above. Where as burrowing crayfish (Engaeus) hold the claws vertically. Left: Yabby (Cherax destructor). Right: Poreless burrowing crayfish (Engaeus nulloporius). Reedy Marsh, Tasmania.

NT$1900/US$57.55. (Amazon has it for US$40 if you lived in the States. Stupid overpriced everything in Taiwan. Good thing I don't have to pay retail for these types of stuff.)
Having friends and family in the cosmetics industry means I get to try a lot of products. This is one of the best I've tried. Its marketing claims: With just one application of Idealist Micro-D, the radiant skin you want is revealed. Feel it: smooth and polished. See it: clearer, less visibly lined and virtually poreless.
And I'll be damned, it's exactly as it says! I don't want to sound like an advertisement but my face feels super smooth and polished and, yes, looks visibly radiant after use.
It's the first time a product actually produces noticeable results on my face after just one use. Amazing.
I've already gone through one tube and I'm on my second.
Good stuff. I would even pay retail for this if I didn't have connections.

'Day 18: Real. Live. Nude. Girl.' On Black
I cut my own hair today (tryin' to save money for the holidays) so that was kinda the idea for the set up of this one. I did it right after I got out of the shower. No make up, no nothing, just naked face. It's sorta my answer to all these portraits you see here on flickr (not to mention the magazines in the grocery stores) of women with poreless skin who look like they're made of plastic. Nope, that's not me. Not at all. I'm real.
This was a lucky shot. The framing turned out perfect. I didn't have to do anything to it other than change it to black and white. I really like the lines of shadows and hair.
It sorta reminds me of when I was doing a lot of drawing and painting in my younger days. Since my favorite subject is people and I didn't always have many people around willing to model for me I ended up doing a lot of self portraits. Best way to learn! Although I don't know if I would recommend it to teenage girls. Staring at your face for hours on end when it's all too easy to measure yourself by impossible beauty standards! But I did get to know my face really well. The particular curve of my jawline for example. It's not straight there's a little dip in there around the chin on both sides --see it? And how the light hits the eye: there's the actual reflection on one side but if you look closely the iris itself, it's actually lighter on the other side of the reflection than it is on that side. Interesting, huh? I think it's pretty cool.
Anyway this one's very up close and personal. Wanna get closer?
Tokidoki. That's "sometimes" in Japanese.
Majide. That's "seriously" in Japanese.
Let me use them together- Tokidoki, majide?!?!
Anyways, I was gifted quite a few dessert scented body products for my birthday. Now, I LOVE love LOVE dessert, but I do not like beauty products that smell like dessert. I hope no one is offended when they read this and understand that I returned everything to get things I really wanted. And I am really happy with my purchases.
Item #1 - Urban Decay Urban Defense Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 20
I use Kiehl's Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 15, daily. I only wear actual foundation (full on makeup) for special occassions. Those are rare these days. I'm glad life has slowed down. Nordstrom used to carry Kiehl's but they don't anymore. I have to go to Neiman Marcus or order online. Inconvenient. I've been looking for a more accessible replacement so we'll see how Urban Decay works out.
**EDIT: I'm returning this. It's a little bit too dry. I believe I will stick with Kiehl's forever. There's a reason why it's been around since 1851 - it's great stuff!**
Item #2 - Two Faced Primed and Poreless Face Primer
A small sample of this came in a kit that Anh gave me for my birthday. I like. I think this one will work out as well. It goes on smooth. I can't exactly use this alone like it says you can, without makeup and definitely not without concealer, because my age spots/sunspots/freckles are dark. I should've invested in a cream that reduces the discoloration.....next time.
**EDIT: I will exchange this for Smashbox's Primer, which I like better. I was told to try the green color correcting one.**
Item #3 - Nars Blush in Orgasm
I know everyone and their mama has used this blush, but this is my first time. It's their best seller and everyone refers it, but I never got around to trying it. It seems darker than I'd like on the back of my hand, but we'll give it a shot.
**EDIT: I really like this. Good color - not too strong, not too faint.**
Item #4 - Tokidoki Heart and Crossbones sterling silver necklace
I returned the Korres tinted moisturizer (SPF 30 but too dry) without the receipt so I had store credit. I returned the dessert scented beauty products today so I had store credit. I had a $30 gift card (Thanks, Mrs. Tu!). All of that allowed me to spend more than $75 to get the Tokidoki necklace for free because I am a Sephora V.I.B. I will get a $20 gift certificate this Christmas instead of the $15 gift certificate you peasant Beauty Insiders will receive. I spent $3.02 on everything. I wonder if the total amount counts towards my reward card, or if only $3 counts.....I have to spend $350 by December in order to keep my status as a V.I.B., or I revert back to a Beauty Insider peasant!!
Either way, I love Sephora all the time, not tokidoki. I could spend hours in there playing with everything. I don't care how "contaminated" the testing products are. It helps me build immunity, and it's fun. Majide.
Tokidoki you feel like a nut. Tokidoki you don't.

I tried two new things today, and I am going to share them both with you....
First I was using stumbleupon (www.stumbleupon.com) at work today, ( I dont know if any of you stumble, but this is my current addiction). Anyhow I was stumbling and I ran across this skin refinishing tutorial, and was pretty impressed. Most tutorials involve a gaussian blur with leaves the skin looking plastic and poreless, not real attractive. This tutorial was very simple and I loved the results. I followed that tutorial for this picture above. I really liked it..... here is the link....
abduzeedo.com/perfect-lie-photoshop-2
And my second new trick I used I got the lighting idea from that tutorial. I dont have a softbox but I love that blown out white background look. So I put my light behind me and used a white sheet hung in front of it and poof, i had a blown out white background, woohoo!!
I put the original photo in the comments so you can see the skin difference.
Here is the original...www.flickr.com/photos/lutman123/5076354529/in/photostream/
This Oil-Control Foundation and Transparent Matte Powder Set is perfect for creating a “no makeup” look! Light-weight and easily blended, these products create a poreless complexion while reducing redness and shine – without feeling like a heavy mask. Perfect for acne prone skin types who react to traditional foundation by getting breakouts and clogged pores.
Conceal-Zit Concealer can be applied before or after Mattify Tinted Powder Foundation. After applying foundation, use a fluffy powder brush to apply Mattify ULTRA Transparent Powder. This sets makeup in place and provides additional oil control. Mattify Cosmetics Makeup is Vegan, Silicone-Free, and Talc-Free. Does not contain any fillers, waxes, or mica.

I had made a fake hair prop for this makeup, in different shades of blues and whites, that symbolized the water and the wind... The piece was fine but when I finished painting myself and tried on the hair thingy it just looked... TOO blue and it kinda ruined the nice warm colors of the look 😒, so I thanked the headdress for its loyal and short service and put it in the trash 😅. Sometimes makeups don't turn out the way you had them envisioned ! And it's ok. 😌 I decided to comb my hair instead and make it so straight it'd look like some water cascading from my head... and I thought it was sense with the water flowing out of the pot (which is cardboard btw 😏) Anyway, here's the little story behind the makeup 😬 I hope you like the finished look, I'm now going to start making my props for the last one : Pisces!

This light weight oil-control foundation blends seamlessly for a poreless look, while minimizing redness, concealing acne blemishes, and evening out skin tone. Perfect makeup for a “no makeup” look.
Oily and Acne prone skin types often have trouble wearing heavy liquid foundation. Not only does it clog pores, but it also doesn’t keep a fresh matte finish for more than a few hours. Mattify Tinted Powder Foundation is feather light and perfect for acne prone skin types. The formula controls oil for hours and does not settle into pores – leaving you with a fresh, clean finish.
Mattify Tinted Powder can also be worn over liquid foundation, for additional coverage and oil control.
Mattify Cosmetics Makeup is Vegan, Silicone-Free, and Talc-Free. Does not contain any fillers, waxes, or mica.
How to bake your makeup like a pro with Mattify's ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin. This transparent oil-control matte face powder to cook your makeup will leave you with a poreless airbrushed look. It sets makeup in place for all day wear, without shine. ULTRA Powder is perfect for oily, acne prone skin types, as it does NOT contain talc, mica, silicone, waxes, or bismuth. Mattify Cosmetics are vegan and cruelty-free.
the other week I saw an ad for "not flawless, PORELESS" makeup. right because pores are evil. I can just imagine the marekting room "what can we make people self concious about thats so small that they will have to be up close to see it and that everybody has?"
