'Queen of the Night' (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) cactus family plants originate in South American rainforests and bloom once a year, each flower for about eight hours. Pollination is effected by gypsy moths (and other insects) seeking nectar by clambering over the multi-lobed stigma and anthers suitably positioned for contact. This occurs in almost total darkness hence the enticing and effusive perfume of the flowers
These were tiny flowers and it's so nice to see the so many bees busy doing their job .. We really need them!

Last image for Pollinator week. It may not really be the smallest pollinator but you can see pollen clumps on its one antenna and legs. This Lesser meadow katydid (Conocephalus spp.) is posed near the end of a calla lily petal and is perhaps 3/16" (5 mm) long, while its antennae are easily 3-4 times as long. Somehow I find it comical that its two antennae are pointed in opposite directions. If you are keeping track, my 90 mm macro lens came back good as ever. Whew.

I must confess that I am not a big fan of insects as a general rule. Dragonflies and bees make up the exception to the rule. Dragonflies are just so beautiful, especially their wings; and bees are so fluffy and furry.

This year throughout summer and autumn I have been delighted to see so many bees pollinating the flowers around Melbourne. There has been a big drive in Melbourne to establish hives for bees on city rooftops and in people's gardens. I hope this is the reason why I have seen so many this year. We need them so badly to enrich our world and brighten our lives!

One of my favourite flowers in the garden to photograph, akebia quintata, this is the white version, see first comment box for the darker version. It is often called the chocolate vine because of its scent which I managed to smell for the first time this year now that the plants are bigger and the flowers more numerous (I have a poor sense of smell) Also for the first time this plant has the larger female flowers so maybe I'll get fruit on both plants later in the year. One needs two versions to get cross pollination and hence fruit.

Allograpta obliqua is a common North American species of hoverfly, commonly known as oblique streaktail. The larvae are important predators of aphids while adults are pollinators.[1]
Description
Adults are 6–7 mm long, with yellow stripes on the thorax and cross banding on the abdomen with four longitudinal, yellow stripes or spots on the fourth and fifth tergite. The face is yellow and lacks a complete median stripe. Males have holoptic eyes and females have dichoptic eyes.[1]
Eggs are white, oval, and about 0.84 mm in length. Larvae reach 8–9 mm.[1] They are bumpy and slug-like.[2]
Life history
Adults of A. obliqua occur throughout the year in the southern part of their range. Eggs are laid on surfaces leaves or branches near aphids. Larvae hatch in two to eight days and feed on the aphids.[1]
Distribution
Found in most of the continental United States, New York State. Quebec in Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, and some parts of the Neotropical Americas, and the West Indies.[1] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allograpta_obliqua
