One of several police dogs deployed on Friday 24 March 2023, as hundreds gathered in central London to protest the rolling out of a red carpet at Number 10 Downing Street for Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli liberals, angry at Netanyahu's attempt to crush the independence of the judiciary and protect himself from a corruption indictment, joined Palestinian and other activists infuriated by 56 years of Apartheid, since Israel's occupation of the West Bank in 1967.

Netanyahu is still on trial for corruption in three separate cases. In 2019 he had already been officially indicted for breach of trust, accepting bribes and fraud, and, as a consequence, he lost the support of his coalition partners in parliament. However, last November, he returned to power in coalition with the ultra-orthodox and ultra nationalist factions, forming what almost all commentators agree is the most right wing government Israel has witnessed since its independence in 1948.

Israel has been rocked by massive protests and strikes ever since Netanyahu's justice minister, Yariv Levin, revealed the government's plan to overhaul the country's justice system in January. Activists pointed out that its intent was clear. To weaken judicial independence and to shield Netanyahu from corruption charges.

Resistance to the government's proposals escalated even further two days after this photograph was taken when Netanyahu returned to Israel and fired his defence minister, Yoav Gallant. Within an hour tens of thousands had taken to the streets in central Jerusalem and also surrounded Netanyahu's home.

Returning to Friday morning in London when this photo was taken, protesters waiting peacefully on the pavement opposite 10 Downing Street were doubtless surprised at the huge number of police, including dogs, deployed on Whitehall. Later, and despite heavy rain, around a hundred protesters made their way to the Savoy Hotel where Netanyahu was rumoured to be staying, where the police presence was far more low key.

Many activists carried placards such as "democracy and occupation cannot coexist" and "Free Palestine = Free Israel." They pointed out that Palestinians live in what both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have concluded is an Apartheid state, many without any access to clean water or electricity, many fearing the demolition of their homes and others the detention for lengthy periods of their relatives and children for protesting the continuing occupation. Meanwhile, Britain's ongoing military and diplomatic support for Israel make us complicit in the continued oppression of the Palestinian people.

Would cheese have the same smell and taste as drugs , think i would have the best policedog in the world.

Thanks for the visit have a nice day

A little while ago we uploaded this image our latest four-legged recruit, on his first day with GMP. Several people have pointed out that they prefer this – somewhat cheeky – image of Mo poking his tongue out. We thought we would share it with you.

Each of our police dogs is assigned its own handler who will accompany them throughout their service. They are involved in important operational duties such as tracking, building searches and other criminal work across Greater Manchester.

The majority of general-purpose police dogs are German Shepherds but other breeds are considered including Rottweilers, Belgium Shepherds and Giant Schnauzers. They can work for up to seven years with the Force and them most go on to spend a happy retirement with their handler.

For more image of our dogs at work and play, please visit our Dog Unit set.

You should call 101, the new national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.

Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.

You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

Everyone deserves to ride safely and comfortably in a Volvo - police dogs too. The Duett was Volvo's first estate car and the first to be adapted for police dogs (you can see one looking out the window at the back). The car features an extra partition in the cargo area, allowing the dog and other equipment to be unloaded separately.

This Duett from 1967 served as a police car in Karlshamn, Blekinge. As extra equipment it includes a flashlight mounted under the hood. The car is a part of an exhibition at the "World of Volvo".

One part of the building "World of Volvo" is a museum - the Volvo history of cars, trucks and buses since the very first Volvo left the factory in Gothenburg in 1927. Another part is a big exhibition about the present and the future, with funny activities in connection with Volvo, to do for the whole family. There is also a restaurant and a café. The building opened to the public in 2024.

Police Dog: Sniff sniff...

Classic Police: Hey hey hey, I should be the star of today!

This was my first visit to Crufts. The show takes over 5 Halls of the National Exhibition Centre and uses the Arena. The highlight for the family was the West Midlands Police Dog show. Excellent demonstration showing how the police dogs are used so effectively to fight crime.

Time for another archive photo, this Volvo V70 T5 was a dedicated Dog Response Vehicle for the Traffic division for a few years, after which it was just used as a normal Traffic Car and the lettering was removed.

The idea was that it would be a rapid response dog unit, used by Traffic Officers/Dog Handlers, which could be used to get a dog to a pursuit quicker but the idea was short lived, with it spending most of its time doing Traffic patrols. It is seen here in 2004 outside the Operations Division at Aykley Heads HQ, which was the main base at the time.
