One of the three large 'waarden' in the western part of the Netherlands is the Alblasserwaard. A 'waard' or polder is a lower lying country surrounded by rivers. The Alblasserwaard is surrounded by serveral large rivers as the Noord, the Lek and the Merwede, and has several smaller rivers running through the landscape such as the Giessen or the Alblas. Kinderdijk is also situated in the waard.
The other large 'waard'-polders in the area are the Krimpenerwaard (in which I live) and the Lopikerwaard, which is in the province Utrecht.
This photo is taken near Molenaarsgraaf and the mill on the photo is Middelmolen.

In a modern polder landscape there are more wind turbines than trees. To me it feels a little bit over the top .....
Cheers!

If you turn your back on the coastline of Holland and set course inland, you will land in the exceedingly Dutch polder landscape of Hoeksche Waard, Alblasserwaard and Vijfheerenlanden.
The rough countryside of the Biesbosch and the historic city of Dordrecht are pure surprises which form an intermission in the peace and the space of this region. Zuid-Holland Zuid is simply the best of Holland!
This magnificent piece of the Netherlands, the southeastern part of the province Zuid-Holland, is within a stone's throw from Rotterdam.

On my way to work I drove through fog banks in the dutch polder landscape.
Near a dike I decided to stop to climb the dike, where my suspicions came true.....
Deze tiendweg was in zeer slechte staat en onbegaanbaar, nu is dit hersteld en kan je van over deze oude route naar Gouda lopen.

Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.
Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.
