“A runaway girl from an alien world, Bubastis rose from slavery to a position of power that she might bring destruction to her enemies.” [Prologue]

The name of the place is “Egupt,” not Egypt, and the weird spelling is maintained in the story. However, the central character, Bubastis, is a real place in Egypt. It was a major ancient Egyptian city in the Nile Delta, famous as the cult center for the cat goddess Bastet, a deity of home, fertility, and protection, leading to massive cat cemeteries and festivals there.

The lady on the cover with the “elephantine pointed ears” is Bubastis, a visitor to Earth from space, who is taken captive by men on camels.

“Yes, waken her,” Antioch said. “I want to question her about her origin and how she came by this strange shape that is a mixture of human and cat. As for those ears, I agree with your sister that they should be trimmed to more pleasing shape.” [From the story]

By the end of the story, Bubastis’ “lips parted in a smile of supreme contentment as she closed her eyes and yielded to the Pharoah’s embrace.”
