Not the most obvious colour to paint your Mustang perhaps, but it's certainly eye-catching!

This P-51D was originally built for the USAAF in 1944 as 44-74423, and also served post-war with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Since 1964, the aircraft had an extensive air racing career flown by Clay Lacy, including winning the Gold Race at Reno in 1970.

The Mustang was purchased by Reno racer Vicky Benzing in 2019, and underwent a four year rebuild, keeping its race number, the registration N64CL and the iconic color. The origin of the colour is apparently due to 1500 gallons of custom purple paint being delivered back in 1964, instead of the 150 gallons intended for stripes!
