Behramkale, also known as Assos, is a historically rich village in the Ayvacık district of the Çanakkale Province, Turkey.

After leaving the Platonic Academy in Athens, Aristotle (joined by Xenocrates) went to Assos, where he was welcomed by King Hermias, and opened an Academy in this city. Assos was founded from 1000 to 900 BC by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos, who specifically are said to have come from Methymna.

The German Architecture Museum (Deutsches Architekturmuseum) (DAM) is located on the Museumsufer in Frankfurt, Germany. Housed in an 18th-century building, the interior has been re-designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers in 1984 as a set of "elemental Platonic buildings within elemental Platonic buildings". It houses a permanent exhibition entitled "From Ancient Huts to Skyscrapers" which displays the history of architectural development in Germany.

The museum organises several temporary exhibitions every year, as well as conferences, symposia and lectures. It has a collection of ca. 180,000 architectural drawings and 600 models, including works by modern and contemporary classics like Erich Mendelsohn, Mies van der Rohe, Archigram and Frank O. Gehry. It also includes a reference library with approximately 25,000 books and magazines.

Our journeys into the heart of the mountains often reveal stories of platonic love, both grand and subtle. Here's one: two elderly lovers whispering secrets to each other.

Put your energy into your goals or meaningful, boundless, everlasting, loving friendships whether platonic or romantic.. instead of self hatred.

“The only obsession everyone wants: ‘love.’ People think that in falling in love they make themselves whole? The Platonic union of souls? I think otherwise. I think you’re whole before you begin. And the love fractures you. You’re whole, and then you’re cracked open. ”

~Philip Roth

Today I'm making it a little easier for myself, because the core of my wish for today's floral greeting is already contained in the motif of the photo.

It's about love in all its possible forms, such as romantic, passionate, hidden, platonic, young, long-lasting, and yearning.

Added to this are self-love and, of course, childlike or parental love, which lead us directly to the highest form of love: unconditional love.

I make no claim to have mentioned them all here. So if you can think of other forms, feel free to add them.

There are so many sources of love within and around us. I wish you from (and with) my heart that you will find, feel, and send as many of them as possible. And this, of course, not only, but especially in the coming week.

Macro Mondays this week falls on January 25, the birthday of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Normally this is a cause for celebration as Burns Night, with much music, dancing and whisky - but sadly not this year due to the COVID restrictions. But I wanted to try and incorporate Robbie Burns into my image for this week's theme 'Lockdown Song'.

Burns was a regular visitor to Edinburgh, and while there he had a platonic relationship with Mrs Agnes Maclehose. Burns wrote Ae Fond Kiss after their final meeting in 1791 before she departed Edinburgh to be with her estranged husband.

Ae Fond Kiss seems like a very suitable lockdown song, for those who have had to be away from family, friends and lovers due to the COVID restrictions on travel and meeting others. The first eight lines are as follows:

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;

Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!

Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,

Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!

Who shall say that Fortune grieves him

While the star of hope she leaves him?

Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me,

Dark despair around benights me.

It is Burns' most recorded love song, and a wonderful version was recorded by the late Andy M Stewart www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXWnuEbwlGA

As always when photographing snails, I set up the shot first, taking care to keep within the size limit and to do test shots to determine the most suitable exposure and depth of field in order to minimise the photoshoot time. The image shows bagpipe music for Ae Fond Kiss and the end of my Scottish smallpipe chanter.

Clearly, two snails were going to be required but getting two snails in adequate focus is difficult, but as I was using f9 (to ensure the title was in soft focus but still readable) I thought it could be done. I went to get the snails, and I found these two youngsters snuggled up together! When I placed them on the chanter, they immediately moved towards each other and displayed this behaviour - it's difficult to avoid anthropomorphising, but this might be interpreted as affection! In all my years as a student of snail behaviour, I have never seen this before, but it has been well described previously (Love, M.L. (2001) Proc. Natl. Acad. Gastropod Sci., Vol. 23, 37-42 ).

The day was fairly dull, but brightened up a little while later, so thought to try this again with better light - but the two snails must have satisfied their lust in the meantime and showed no interest in each other, in fact crawling off in opposite directions (we've all been there...).

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

I will leave the familiar world for a while........

HUGS AND STAY WELL MY FRIENDS!

The teachings of Zarathustra (Zoroaster) appeared in Persia at some point during the period 1700-1800 BCE.[6][7]

His wisdom became the basis of the religion Zoroastrianism, and generally influenced the development of the Iranian branch of Indo-Iranian philosophy. Zarathustra was the first who treated the problem of evil in philosophical terms.[7]

He is also believed to be one of the oldest monotheists in the history of religion.

He espoused an ethical philosophy based on the primacy of good thoughts (pendar-e-nik), good words (goftar-e-nik), and good deeds (kerdar-e-nik).

The works of Zoroaster and Zoroastrianism had a significant influence on Greek philosophy and Roman philosophy. Plato learnt of Zoroastrian philosophy through Eudoxus and incorporated much of it into his own Platonic realism.[8]

Zarathustra was known as a sage, magician and miracle-worker in post-Classical Western culture, though almost nothing was known of his ideas until the late eighteenth century. By this time his name was associated with lost ancient wisdom and was appropriated by Freemasons and other groups who claimed access to such knowledge.

In 2005, the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy ranked Zarathustra number two in the chronology of philosophical events. Zarathustra's impact lingers today due in part to the system of rational ethics he founded called Mazda-Yasna. The word Mazda-Yasna is avestan and is translated as "Worship of Wisdom" in English.

Starting another series of abstracts, all straight down on the floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston during the Texas Contemporary Art Fair. Lots of great stuff on the walls, but I made time to look at the floor as well.

You'l note that the overall style here is different than most of the recent abstracts. To the unaided eye the floor is quite uniformly dark grey, well polished but retaining detritus from the many previous events. There are a lot of blown-out reflections due to the many fluorescent lights high above in this vast open space.

Don't hate the vegetable; hate the vegetable patch.

Created for the "Award Tree" Group's "Blue Fudge 2" challenge. Utilizing an older SOOC shot from my archives for its intense blue.

Acknowledging, with hand on heart, my "Canadianness". There's an oblique nod here to one of my favourite Canadian artists, Lawren Harris and his work. One piece in particular. His colour scheme is quite different but it's the same kind of evergreen branches, laden with snow. You might say my image is night to his day.

Harris was a member of "The Group of Seven", a much loved and utterly Canadian assembly of painters the sought out and truly conveyed a sense of the unique Canadian landscape. His work stands out for it's lack of heavy texture ( impasto ) and it's ethereal, even mystical, atmosphere. There is always a light outside of the frame entering in from an unusual angle, as if it were divine.

Indeed, in his later years, Harris become deeply involved in Theosophy, a 19th century mystical moment that was somewhat Platonic or Neo-Platonic in its views. Utterly unlike, but sharing the same motivation, Harris, like Piet Mondrian, also a Theosophist, sought to convey something of a higher realm of ideal form through his work. His last paintings were purely abstract but if one looks long enough, one can still see references here and there to the Canadian landscape.

Yellow: Friendship, Joy, Get Well. ... Throughout history, yellow has been closely associated with the sun, making these roses excellent for cheering people up. The School of Athens (Italian: Scuola di Atene) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1509 and 1511 as a part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

The Stanza della Segnatura

The Stanza della Segnatura was the first of the rooms to be decorated, and The School of Athens, representing philosophy, was probably the third painting to be finished there, after La Disputa (Theology) on the opposite wall, and the Parnassus (Literature). The painting is notable for its accurate perspective projection, which Raphael learned from Leonardo da Vinci (who is the central figure of this painting, representing Plato). The rebirth of Ancient Greek Philosophy and culture in Europe (along with Raphael's work) were inspired by Leonardo's individual pursuits in theatre, engineering, optics, geometry, physiology, anatomy, history, architecture and art. This work has long been seen as "Raphael's masterpiece and the perfect embodiment of the classical spirit of the Renaissance.

Aspects of the fresco other than the identities of the figures have also been variously interpreted, but few such interpretations are unanimously accepted among scholars. That the rhetorical gestures of Plato and Aristotle are kinds of pointing (to the heavens, and down to earth) is popularly accepted as likely. However, Plato's Timaeus – which is the book Raphael places in his hand – was a sophisticated treatment of space, time, and change, including the Earth, which guided mathematical sciences for over a millennium. Aristotle, with his four-elements theory, held that all change on Earth was owing to motions of the heavens. In the painting Aristotle carries his Ethics, which he denied could be reduced to a mathematical science. It is not certain how much the young Raphael knew of ancient philosophy, what guidance he might have had from people such as Bramante and whether a detailed program was dictated by his sponsor, Pope Julius II.

Nevertheless, the fresco has even recently been interpreted as an exhortation to philosophy and, in a deeper way, as a visual representation of the role of Love in elevating people toward upper knowledge, largely in consonance with contemporary theories of Marsilio Ficino and other neo-Platonic thinkers linked to Raphael.
