Almondtrees now are flowering in pink and white along our winestreet, this is soooo wonderful!

Most azaleas we are familiar with today are descended from Asian shrubs, and were originally cultivated by monks of the Buddhist monasteries. When seeds of the Rhododendron luteum were sent to England from the shores of the Black Sea, it became parent to many azalea hybrids.

Azaleas have been hybridized for hundreds of years. Over 10,000 different azalea plants have been registered or named.

For dramatic spreads of colour, dahlias are hard to beat. Named after the Swedish botanist, Anders Dahl, these wonderful flowers originated in the mountain ranges of Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia, before becoming popular throughout the world.

#Macro #MacroMondays #PickTwo #PinkFlower

Some of the most spectacular dahlias are cactus and semi-cactus types. With their spiky petals, they can trace their lineage back to a single surviving plant grown from a crate of tubers imported into The Netherlands in 1872.

Their star-like form means they stand up well to inclement weather, because they're less prone to being weighed down by heavy rain, or blown about by wind, than other dahlia types.

Nadia Ruth is an outstanding Cactus dahlia, it produces very pretty soft, pastel pink ruffled flowers.

Because it reached its highest development as an ornamental plant in China, and as most early cultivars were collected there and shipped to Europe, the species was given its name rosa-sinensis or Rose of China (China Rose). Today there is almost unlimited variation in shades of colour.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Rose of China / San Joaquín)

The hibiscus plant commonly seen in parks or garden is likely to be Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Rose of China).

The male part (stamen) of the flower consists of stem-like filaments and each filament ends with the pollen-producing anther. The base of the filament is attached to a cylinder-like stem, known as a staminal column or stamen tube.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has a genetic characteristic known as polyploidy, in which there are more than two sets of chromosomes. Due to this genetic characteristic, the offspring may be quite different from the parent. Plant breeders have used this characteristic to produce a wide variety of hibiscus plants with different flower colours and shapes.
