Not a great specimen of the feathered bird variety.....but I liked the shadow.

Seen today in the parking lot at my local grocery store. They looked so pretty, I just had to stop to take a photo.

Pigeon ramier (Columba palumbus)

The common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) is a large species in the dove and pigeon family. It belongs to the Columba genus and, like all pigeons and doves, belongs to the family Columbidae.

I've watched the pigeons take off as a group, then fly en masse, then land together at another location. I decided to try to catch the mid flight. Not easy to get several in focus, especially in this darker season. Still, it will only get worse as winter approaches, so I can't really complain!

Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) A bird found on small islands and in coastal regions near the Philippines, the Nicobar Pigeon is the closest living relative of the extinct dodo.

A large pigeon, it has a grey head, with metallic green and copper colouring throughout, and red feet.

From the Cornell Lab: "The Pigeon Guillemot is an attractive auk that nests on rocky coastlines of the North Pacific. Its velvety, dark brown plumage is set off by a bright white patch in the upperwing and vivid scarlet feet. In winter, the black underparts are replaced with dingy white feathering. Unlike many other species of alcids (auks, murrelets, and puffins), which feed far out to sea, Pigeon Guillemots stay fairly close to shore where they forage along the seafloor for small fish, worms, and crustaceans."

Another installment in my seabird series, this one was strolling along a beach in Coastal Washington. First in comments below is a shot of this guy making new Pigeon Guillemots.

Many hopeful pigeons followed this stunning woman around St. James park hoping for anything like her treatment of that one lucky bird in her hand.

Oh mann, this place was disgusting. All this dirt you see is pigeon shit. Dozens of dead pigeons too. Man the smell of it all. Why not shoot a couple of waterscapes i sometimes ask myself.

Pigeons' homing talents continued to shape history during the 20th century. In both World Wars, rival nations had huge flocks of pigeon messengers. (America alone had 200,000 at its disposal in WWII.) By delivering critical updates, the avians saved thousands of human lives. One racing bird named Cher Ami completed a mission that led to the rescue of 194 stranded U.S. soldiers on October 4, 1918.

The pigeon here is a beautiful bird, of a delicate bronze colour, tinged with pink about the neck, and the wings marked with green and purple.
