I was responsible for developing the basic elements of the Pick n Pay brand. This included the brandmark, corporate typeface selection, photographic concept and the window graphic but not the idea for the window graphic to interact with the subject matter.

Fall is a great time of year. My father particularly loved this season because for him it meant mushroom picking. As a kid he would take us out and teach us where to look, how to pick and which wild mushrooms were edible. It was a day that involved hiking in the woods-often on a local farmers property he befriended and got permission to wander over. We'd brush back leaves searching for a bed of 'shaggy manes' or ' buttons'. It was the type of search that seemed fruitless until you were able to spot the first one, then all of a sudden you saw them 'all'. What started out as tedious and impossible task suddenly became fun. We would return home with bushel baskets full of them and sit at the kitchen table cleaning and packaging them for the freezer to eat at future meals. I even recall tasting my first sip of beer (Pabst) on one of these late afternoons around the table cleaning mushrooms. Every time I see a wild mushroom, the good ones and the poisonous ones, I think of my Dad.
Out of all the shrooms I've seen I never came across a tree like this one. It had several limbs that were cut and in each remaining orifice a mushroom sprouted. I focused on only one for this shot but there were several growing out of very unusual looking spaces.
I made this by putting a cd in the microwave for 20 seconds. I then heated up a needle and punched holes in numerous guitar picks and strung it all together using fishing line.
