Batumi Botanical Garden, located at the distance of 9 km from the center of Batumi, occupies the area of 108, 7 hectare of approximately 1 km stripe of Southern-Western section of the coastline located between the river Chakvistskali estuary and the Green Cape, being spread to the height of 0-220 meters from the sea level, which not long time ago was totally covered with Kolkheti type forest (beech, chestnut, linden) and evergreen sub-forest.
From 80s of XIX century significant introductory works of exotic plants were launched in the part of Batumi. Michael D'Alfonso, Veru, Solovtsev, Olinski, Diadusha, Porai-Koshitse, Stoianov, Triandafilis and other were considered as the persons introducing the plants at the Black Seaside of Tans Caucasus and cultivators of resort gardens. Geographer and traveler Pavel Tatarinov is also considered to be one of the initiators, having founded so called “Acclimatization Garden” on 10 hectare areas in 1892 on Batumi Coast, being currently known as “Upper Park”.
Foundation of Batumi Botanical garden is related to the name of Andrei Krasnov, a Professor, Geographer, Botanical and Traveler from Kharkov University. Batumi botanical Garden was opened on November 3, 1912. Georgian agronomist-decorator Iason Gordezian greatly contributed to its cultivation and decoration.
Florist richness of the garden is incorporated in 9 phyto-geographic departments and three parks.
The garden is distinguished by century-long parks, unique collections of subtropical flora, as well as succulents, palms, roses, camellias, citrus, bamboos, magnolia, Cyprus, pine-trees, nut, persimmon and maple tree collections. Visitors’ attention is attracted by 125-year-old large-flowery magnolias counting 125 years, eldest evergreen sequoias, he lane of vertiginous fragrant Osmanthus, the stall of flowery plants, secret Japanese gardens, romantic, cozy landscapes and panoramic views.
The garden collection is comprised of up to 1800 taxonomic units, with 90 of Caucasian origin.
The garden serves as a significant center for spreading agricultural and biological knowledge. It has established relationship with the Botanical Gardens of more than 140 countries, Universities and other scientific-research institutions in the form of signing the Memoranda of Cooperation.
Since 1998 Batumi Botanical Garden became a member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), being of significant value in view of mutual cooperation, sharing of scientific information and working on the joint strategy of Botanical Gardens.
The Botanical Garden is distinguished by its scientific library, herbarium, and seed foundation.
The Garden offers the visitors the following services: guide’s service, camping, picnic, marriage service, purchase of decorative plants, as well as seasonal-ticket system.

In 1958 Charles David Keeling set up a carbon dioxide testing station on Mauna Loa, on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Data has been collected there over the past 5 decades. Here's the web page for the CO2 program. The data can be found here. Remember that -99.99 means missing data.

The photo above shows part of a graph my 8th graders put together this year. The vertical scale of the graph paper ranges from 310 to 390 ppm CO2. Each class did a graph. Each group did one sheet. Each sheet held 4 years of data. I invite other teachers to do the same exercise!! Let me know how it went.
Each student graphed at least 2 years of data. Some did more for extra credit. Once they had finished their sheet, I had them cut off one end and we overlapped the other end to make this composite graph. Sadly, all got discarded at the end of the year except this one, and this one ranges only from 1958 to 1992. The rest of the classes went all the way to 3/08, and contained 4 more sheets.
So, what's the trend of CO2 in the atmosphere over the last 50 years?
The curvy line indicates the monthly data, with seasonal fluctuations. The red line is a student group's approximation of the general trend of the data. The data itself ranged from about 314 to 386 ppm, from 1958 to 2008, or an increase of approximately 70 ppm. Starting at 314, and increasing by 70 ppm is an increase of 22% .......
TWENTY TWO PERCENT INCREASE IN THE CO2 CONTENT OF THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE PAST 50 YEARS!! That's an increase by more than one fifth! And that was in 2008.
So what? Well let's ignore the global warming issue for a moment. One of the less-discussed results of CO2 in the atmosphere is that it dissolves into the oceans, and forms carbonic acid [a small amount of the CO2 combines with water to form a small amount of H2CO3 in the solution], so this trend in atmospheric CO2 also points toward acidification of the oceans. Scientists have been investigating how this might affect the marine ecosystems, especially the near-surface waters, where the atmospheric gas absorption occurs.
Well, guess what? One thing that an acid can do is dissolve things like calcium carbonate, or reduce the rate of calcification. Now, CaCO3 [thanks phyto] just happens to be the primary ingredient of the shells and casings of various marine organisms, such as clams, oysters, snails/gastropods, corals, and many planktonic organisms such as calcareous algaes. But see the first link in phyto's comment below that indicates some organisms are actually producing CaCO3 at an increasing rate. (see, for example, this article.) So, if some ecologically important organisms (what organisms aren't ecologically important?) find it progressively more difficult to form shells and casings, then what?
Maybe we're being forced to find out. Over the past few years events have occurred where oyster larvae in the Pacific Northwest were dying prematurely. The cause was ultimately traced to pH fluctuations. Now the oyster production process must be adjusted to accommodate these fluctuations -- an adaptation that will only be effective as long as the high pH periods are not too acidic.
When I wrote the title, I was thinking of the dead trees contrasting with all of the foreground vegetation. However, the main weed here seems to be that obnoxious yellow parsnip: not deadly exactly but not nice either.

There is an ongoing problem in many areas of Canada with persons being injured through contact with the Wild Parsnip weed. The prolific spread and dense growth of Wild Parsnip throughout Eastern Ontario in recent years is seriously escalating this health risk in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville.
Wild parsnip is of concern because humans develop a severe skin irritation from contact with sap from the plant. Wild Parsnip plants have chemicals called psoralens (more precisely, furocoumarins) that cause phyto-photodermatitis: an interaction between plants (phyto) and light (photo) that induce skin (derm) inflammation (itis). Once the furocoumarins are absorbed by the skin, they are energized by UV light on both sunny and cloudy days. They then bind to DNA and cell membranes, destroying cells and skin.
Wild Parsnip burns usually occur in streaks and elongated spots, reflecting where a damaged leaf or stem moved across the skin before exposure to sunlight. If the sap gets into the eyes, it may cause temporary or permanent blindness.
During much of July, August and early September wild parsnip is one of the most visible yellow-flowered weeds in roadside ditches, public recreation areas, around sports fields, fence rows, and along railroad tracks.
