Un zèbre en bonne condition physique a plusieurs moyens de défense contre ses prédateurs : il possède une très bonne vue diurne, une ouïe excellente, un bon odorat et court très vite,en cas de danger à 60 km/h en moyenne et peut faire des pointes à 80 km/h Il peut maintenir cette allure sur plusieurs centaines de mètres. Ils peuvent aussi tenir une vitesse inférieure (40 km/h) mais sur une plus longue distance.
Pour se défendre, ils peuvent aussi mordre et d'un coup de sabot, briser la mâchoire d'une lionne. Il mesure entre 1,10 et 1,40 m de haut à l'épaule pour les zèbres des plaines et de 1,30 à 1,60 mètres de haut à l'épaule pour les zèbres de Grévy. Ils pèsent de 150 kg à 300 kg pour les zèbres communs, les zèbres de Grévy pèsent de 250 à 400 kg.

Para defenderse, también pueden morder y romper las mandíbulas de una leona con una patada de sus pezuñas. Miden entre 1,10 y 1,40 metros de altura en el hombro en el caso de las cebras de llanura y entre 1,30 y 1,60 metros en el caso de las cebras de Grevy. Las cebras comunes pesan entre 150 kg y 300 kg, mientras que las cebras de Grevy pesan entre 250 kg y 400 kg.
