Physalis alkekengi is grown mainly for ornamental use but the red berry inside the skeletal "cage" is actually edible. The rest of the plant is poisonous, a trait it shares with the tomato which also has poisonous leaves and stalks but is rich in vitamin C. The Physalis berry is even richer in vitamin C than the tomato, the orange and the lemon.
