Some of the many cattails along the last Vermilion Lake at sunset. The left shoulder of Mt. Rundle on the right.
Who knew (I didn't):
"No green plant produces more edible starch per acre than the Cat O’ Nine Tails; not potatoes, rice, taros or yams. Plans were underway to feed American soldiers with that starch when WWII stopped. One acre of cattails can produce 6,475 pounds of flour per year on average.
Cattails are the supermarket of the wilds. It is said that if a lost person has found cattails, they have three of the four things they need to survive: Water, food, shelter and a source of fuel for heat—the dry old stalks. The young cob-like tips of the plant are edible as is the white bottom of the stalk, spurs off the main roots and spaghetti like rootlets off the main roots. They have vitamins A, B,and C, potassium and phosphorus. The pollen can be used like flour." eattheweeds.com

This Yellow Chrysanthemum Plant is a symbol of friendship and cheerfulness!!
`Did you know??~
Chrysanthemum has been consumed in Asia for thousands of years, playing a vital role in Traditional Chinese Medicine and as a delicious and nourishing beverage.
It is believed that it was first cultivated in China in the 15th century BC where it was revered by poets and artists. Chrysanthemums were a symbol of nobility and integrity.
As a herbal tea, it was first brewed and popularized during the Song Dynasty (960 AD - 1279 AD) and for centuries it was used to treat respiratory issues, blood pressure irregularities and to calm the nerves.
Chrysanthemum is packed with vitamins A, B, C and K, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, sodium, zinc, amino acids, and glycosides.
This blend of components makes this beverage not only tasty, but delightfully good for you as well, and you may drink it to reap a number of benefits.

The name of this orchid is: Mini Phalaenopsis
Suitable place for cultivation: A half shade place (indirect shade) is recommended, as direct exposure to the sun can cause burns on its leaves. So, the best time is the morning sun.
Watering: once a week; always letting the water drain well, because the excess of it in its roots can help to kill it (rotting). The orchid, in general, resists the lack of water well, more than the excess. For this reason, gravel is placed in its vessels, Styrofoam, to have this easy flow.
Never place dishes or anything that could block the water from flowing out of the pot.
Flowering: from one to three times a year, this will depend on the adaptation to the place where you will stay.
Pruning: it is recommended to cut the stem of the orchid. One tip is to cut above the second little one, so you preserve the plant. This makes all the difference to help it bloom again, as they say that this pruning helps the plant not to send nutrients to the place that is already "dead", thus failing to nourish other healthy parts.
Fertilization: The famous 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 = NPK formula (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), should be applied biweekly or monthly. The proportion of fertilizer must be as indicated on the label. It is usually 1 teaspoon of coffee for every liter of water.
In the autumn and winter months, fertilization can be suspended.
If you do not want to stay with your orchid in the plastic vase in which it comes, you can easily fix it to tree trunks, wrapping your roots with coconut fiber or moss and fixing with a resistant band.
Coloring: different colors: white, yellow, burgundy, lilac, baby pink, greenish, pink, streaks and orange.

The May Flower in São Paulo, Brazil or the Christmas Cactus - common name of the species Schlumbergera truncata - is one of those plants that we tend to despise most of the year. It is, after all, a real botanical commonplace: since the days of grandma's gardens, it has been hanging around on any balcony or accommodated in cachepots on some furniture in the living room. It is also a champion of popularity in floras - ready to be pushed by sellers every time the consumer searches for a plant “for beginners”.
The May flower is a perennial species, that is, it does not die after giving flowers. Often, however, it cannot withstand the thud of its metabolic explosion: after so much effort, the stem buds become wilted and break easily. In the extreme, the plant dies from stress. To avoid this, it is necessary to redouble the care with nutrition. After flowering, increase the watering slightly and add a little earthworm humus or phosphorus-rich fertilizer (the “P” of the renowned NPK trio).
Last tip: take advantage of the loose buds to produce new seedlings. It's very easy, just fix a piece of them in moist soil.
at least not with certainty. If the specimen composition you send is about your fair usual average, I suggest that perhaps a couple of whales would be all you would want for the present. Not the largest kind, but simply good middling-sized whales :-)

In late afternoon light, especially during the winter months, the Painted Hills brighten and show off their variegated colors. Several elements contribute to these bands of compacted volcanic ash - Aluminum, Silicon, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Sodium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Titanium, Potassium, Oxygen, and Hydrogen. If in Oregon, the drive over the Ochoco Mountains to visit these ancient hills will reward you.
Personal and current note:
All my May flowers, I mean every possible color here, bloomed in May. The Christmas cactus are known in the northern hemisphere as the Christmas Cactus (late autumn or early winter), but in the state of São Paulo it has the popular name of the May flower, native to a mountain range in the state of Rio de Janeiro , overhangs trees. The rest of the country calls it the silk flower and it makes sense because of the transparency and delicacy of the flower petals.
It's a shame to be so perennial.
Once a year and for a maximum of 6 days or a maximum of seven days of flowering.
This orange May flower is tricolor. It has an orange inner part, a yellow to orange upper part and a pink stigma. It's very beautiful!

This is all true, yes. But, as I was able to feel myself this week, the fact that it is party rice does not eliminate the extraordinary value and the pleasure of having a May flower inside the house. And pleasure is precisely in the miracle that works, out of nowhere, in your metabolism. During most of the year, the May flower is a discreet little thing, with its branches formed by fragile and evergreen buds releasing at most new buds. Suddenly, sometime between the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, behold that dull plant explodes in buttons with extremely striking shapes and colors - mine, for example, pump out between May and July.
After flowering, it often withers, loses part of the buds and spends the rest of the year trying to recover from the excruciating effort of flowering.
The May flower is from the cactus family, but has no thorns. In its original habitat, the Atlantic Forest, it presents an epiphyte behavior. In other words: like orchids and many bromeliads, it uses tree trunks as a support. Thanks to horticultural improvement, the variety of colors available on the market today is immense. You can splurge, as you can see in this photo that illustrates this post, the very rare flower of May YELLOW.
Despite the fact that the May flower is a peaceful and favorable cultivation plant, some precautions are mandatory to avoid unpleasantness. Here is a basic guide to success:
1) SOIL - As it is a succulent, the may flower requires perfect drainage. She does, however, enjoy a lot of organic matter. So, plant it in pots with holes, filled with pebbles and sand at the bottom and the remaining two thirds completed with vegetable soil. Curiosity: if these conditions are met, the May flower can grow a lot and live for years in small pots.
2) WATERING - Do not overdo it and do not leave dishes filled with water under the pot, to avoid waterlogging and root rot. But also be sure to water frequently - two to four times a week, depending on the weather. She likes the slightly damp earth.
3) LUZ - This is, perhaps, the main catch. The May flower hates receiving direct sunlight, but enjoys well-lit environments. The right places for her, therefore, are balconies and bright interiors, but fresh. Or under the treetops.
4) FLOWERING - The May flower releases its buds when two variables combine: the nights become longer and the minimum temperatures are close to 10-15 degrees. And so it lives up to its name: in the Southeast of Brazil, these ideal conditions are usually registered between mid-May and the end of June.
5) POST-FLOWERING STRESS - May flower is a perennial species, that is, it does not die after giving flowers. Often, however, it cannot withstand the thud of its metabolic explosion: after so much effort, the stem buds become wilted and break easily. In the extreme, the plant dies from stress. from Wikipedia:
"A mineral lick (also known as a salt lick) is a place where animals can go to lick essential mineral nutrients from a deposit of salts and other minerals. Natural licks are common, and they provide essential elements such as phosphorus and the biometals (sodium, calcium, iron, zinc, and trace elements) required for bone, muscle and other growth in herbivorous mammals such as deer, moose, elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, tapirs, woodchucks, fox squirrels, mountain goats, porcupines, and frugivorous bats. Such licks are especially important in ecosystems such as tropical rainforests and grasslands with poor general availability of nutrients."
WITH LESS THAN 2000 still living in the wild according to the IUCN Red List the Grevy's Zebra is listed as ENDANGERED
It is the tallest of all zebras and of all living species of wild equids. Some of the distinctive features are well visible in this image:
A large and long head with huge ears that are round
Narrow and closely spaced stripes
No stripes on the belly
A tall and erect mane that extends into a black stripe on the top of the body

The photo shows a red capped Russula mushroom growing in moss on the forest floor.
Russula mushrooms are fairly common and have a worldwide distribution. They are invariably ectomycorrhizal in that they form an intricate and beneficial association with many diverse plants (including trees). Through a network of strands (mycelia) the fungus facilitates uptake of water and nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus to the plant host but requires energy (in the form of sugars) in return.

Feeding an ever-growing population without negative impacts on the environment is critical. Sustainable agricultural practices transform farming into an environmentally friendly operation while boosting yields and other benefits. One project I'm engaged in involves testing a recycled phosphate fertilizer called struvite on crop response. Struvite, a slow-release phosphorus fertilizer recycled from municipal waste and sewage sludge, doesn't rapidly release phosphorus into waterways like readily soluble fertilizers do. This innovative technology may help us save our water bodies from environmental problems such as eutrophication and algal blooming. This is the study site on a winter day.

Tithonia diversifolia is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae that is commonly known as the tree marigold, Mexican tournesol, Mexican sunflower, Japanese sunflower or Nitobe chrysanthemum. It is native to Mexico and Central America but has a nearly pantropical distribution as an introduced species. Depending on the area they may be either annual or perennial. It has shown great potential in raising the soil fertility in soils depleted in nutrients. Originating in Mexico; research has shown its potential in benefiting poor African farmers. This plant is a weed that grows quickly and has become an option as an affordable alternative to expensive synthetic fertilizers. It has shown to increase plant yields and the soil nutrients of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). 32207

A tree standing alone is only seemingly alone; its roots are interconnected with the rest of the forest and the surrounding nature. Plants can warn their neighbors of danger (such as pests) or coordinate their growth through these connections; they transmit electrical signals through their tissues in response to stimuli like touch or changes in light. This network allows the transfer of nutrients like sugars, nitrogen, and phosphorus, as well as hormones and genetic material, between plants... a wonderfully supportive world.

Sattal is an ecologically fragile mesotrophic group of lakes and under the impact of heavy environmental degradation. Extensive deforestation, dumping of non-biodegradable waste, uncontrolled urbanization of the catchments and nearby forest is harming the ecology of the area. This results in scanty rainfall, a decrease in the number of plant and animal species and rapid drying up of perennial springs. The lakes also suffer from a reduced oxygen content and high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Poaching has eliminated many wild animals. Khudariya Tal became Sukha Tal (Dry Lake) due the leakage of water from its western extremity. An extensive growth of invasive plants such as Lantana, Parthenium and Eichhornia is also endangering the ecological survival of the lakes.

Turbinellus kauffmanii is a large, vase-shaped mushroom that grows in forests across North America, especially under conifers such as fir, hemlock, and pine.
It’s an ectomycorrhizal fungus, meaning it forms a partnership with tree roots—helping the tree absorb nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen from the soil, while the tree provides the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis thereby benefiting both organisms.
The cap is tan to brown with firm, upturned scales and can grow up to 35 cm wide and 40 cm tall. Instead of true gills underneath, it has folded, veiny ridges that run down the stem.
This mushroom contains norcaperatic acid, a compound that can cause stomach issues if eaten, so it's not safe to consume. It usually appears from summer to autumn (and sometimes into early winter) in mature conifer forests.

Ramaria spp., commonly known as coral fungi, are a group of branched, coral-like fungi found mainly in forested areas, especially in temperate and boreal regions.
Most species are mycorrhizal, meaning they form beneficial relationships with trees. In this partnership, the fungus associates with the tree’s roots and receives sugars made by the tree through photosynthesis. In return, the fungus helps the tree absorb water and important nutrients such as phosphorus from the soil.

The Little Club Spur Bog Orchid (Platanthera clavellata) is native to eastern North America and is widely distributed throughout its range. It typically grows in bogs, swamps, fens, and wet meadows. It is a small orchid (4-8 inches height) that prefers cool, partly shaded habitats with stable hydrology and organic-rich soils.
This orchid relies on specific moths and flies for pollination — particularly those with proboscises (mouthparts) long enough to reach the nectar stored in narrow spurs attached to its small, inconspicuous flowers. Nectar is produced at the base of this spur and acts as a reward to attract insect pollinators, which in turn transfer the pollen between flowers.
Platanthera clavellata produces numerous tiny dust like seeds that are dispersed in the air. Like most orchids, it requires a symbiotic (beneficial) relationship with fungi (called mycorrhizae) for successful germination and seedling growth. These fungi colonize seedling roots and help provide water and mineral nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus essential for growth.

So, when I was a child, Alien was one of my favorite movie - and it still is.
When I saw these long patterns in the sand in Thailand, I just knew what kind of picture I would like to take about this mystic sight.
I hope you can feel that almost space-like atmosphere I tried to convey here.
There were fishing boats floating on the horizon and the whole sea was glowing a mysterious green color. Never seen anything like that before.

~ Careless ~ Poem by me ~ 12.02.16 - 12.22.16
I feel like I've been hurled
Into this mock-live topsy-turvy world.
What a pain it can be;
Am I supposed to feel carefree?
I assumed I'd unwind,
But I've come to find,
Somehow the tone's subtly wrong,
Drums of the same old song.

Union Pacific GP30s No. 802 and 842 lead the Park City Local through Peterson the morning of July 5, 1986. Along the way, the GP30s will drop off three box cars at Morgan and 12 covered hoppers at Devils Slide. The 802 and 842 will continue from Echo south to Phoston on the Park City Branch where the last 15 loads of phosphorus rock will retrieved on the Ontario Branch.

Who will Win the Nobel Peace Prize ?
We didn't know then and there was no shoo-in candidate in 2016;the only thing I knew was that there were air strikes in Aleppo and fighter jets and helicopters dropping barrel bombs, phosphorus and chlorine ; how ironic while awaiting the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize ...
My own humble Peace Prizes went to the "White Helmets",an all-volunteer team known as the Syrian Civil Defense on the front lines rescuing civilians caught up in the carnage of the country's five-year war.Daring their efforts, they have saved more than 60,000 people in Syria.
And,to the Aegean Islanders, the inhabitants of Greek islands who have rescued drowning refugees and helped those who reach the shore.Just ordinary people, with no order from above, respecting tradition and acting out of sheer hospitality and solidarity. What they did and do shows the best of humanity in the simplest way.
On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes, the Nobel Prizes. As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations and for the abolition or reduction of standing armies.
* Dedicated to :
"Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US,held on the third Monday of January. He won the Nobel Peace Prize 1964 ... In his acceptance speech he said that : "Peace is more Precious than Diamonds or Silver or Gold, sooner or later All the People of the World will have to discover a way to live together in Peace ... "
* And to Mankind's Struggle for a Lasting Peace.
*On December 10,anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, each year,Oslo City Hall hosts the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

Fifth image in my current Flower Series...
Captured in a neighbor's garden, then edited in my On1 editor.
There are well over 800 species of allium plants worldwide, the most common being onions, garlic, chives, and leeks.
About 250 to 300 species and cultivars are grown for their flowers only and not for food. Botanists have taken those showy species, bred them for the garden industry, and they have become popular in many a garden across the world.
These ornamental alliums do not taste very good, though, and are often bitter and too high in phosphorus to be healthy for human consumption. Just enjoy their pretty flowers :)

The Bessemer process is a steel production method that is no longer used today. It is named after its developer Henry Bessemer, who developed it in England and patented it in 1856.
In the so-called Bessemer bulb, a cylindrical refractory vessel, air is blown through the very carbon-rich pig iron melted in the blast furnace. The carbon and other elements burn to form carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other oxides. As a result, the temperature of the molten metal rises far above the melting temperature of the pig iron of 1,150 °C at least to that of the steel, which can be up to around 1,550 °C. When the carbon content in the iron has fallen below a certain value, steel has been produced from the pig iron. Experts can tell when the composition corresponds to the desired one by the color of the flame at the exit of the Bessemer bulb.
The Bessemer bulb is a so-called bottom-blowing converter. For the Bessemer method to work in the acidic process, the pig iron must be low in phosphorus and sulphur. Pig iron with this impurity was processed into steel in the Thomas bulb.
My intuition has always said No thx to me in eating fruits during the day, I have bought fruits, "because it's good for you" and I have thrown them away over and over again.
Mark has knowledge about all kinds of stuff and he eats another breakfast then I have ever done. So I became curious, and that's a good start for a change.
And at the same time I read that you should eat your fruits in the morning, like he does.
It all came into its place, now I understand why my intuition stopped me.
Usually people will only eat a fruit after dinner, to look at it as a dessert. But it's the worst time to eat them. Most of the nutrients are lost during digestion. This is thanks to the fermentation of the sugar content.
It is not a good idea to eat fruits when you want during the day either because they contain a substance called fructose that the body converts into glucose and energy. If you do not use it, it will be stored in your body as fat.
From a nutritional point of view, eating fruit in the evening will not help you with weight loss just as it does during the day.
This is because fruit helps speed up metabolism, but it only happens when you are active. If you lie on the couch or in the bed and sleep, your metabolism will always work slower.
Fruit provides:
Calcium
Phosphorus
Iron
Antioxidants
Sugar
Fat (in small quantities)
Carbohydrates
Vitamins
Fruits have a low fat content, so it's not a good idea to just limit yourself to these foods in the morning. Your body also needs carbohydrates, and especially fiber.
And that I learned from Mark too 💞
I love this breakfast.
My breakfast contains of a couple of different variety of fruits, maybe slicing them so I have them for a couple of days, home baked bread, egg and a drinking non-sweeted yogurt.
So, when you eat fruit for breakfast, it's a great way to start your day with a healthy dose of natural energy and you don't ruin it on the way through your body.
I bet my body is smiling all the way 😄🤔😊😂😅
Pollution has long been a problem in Lake Lugano. In the 1960s and 1970s it was officially forbidden to bathe in the lake. Despite the continued introduction of sewage treatment plants such as in Gandria, factors such as lake retention time and lack of oxygen and increasing phosphorus concentrations means it is unclear if the lake will recover.
Water hyacinth/ Aguapé – Eichhornia crassipes
.Scientific Name: Eichhornia crassipes
.Popular Names: Water hyacinth, Baroneza, Camalote, Water hyacinth, Murumuru, Mururé, Pareci, Peacock, Queen of the lakes
.Family: Pontederiaceae
.Category: Aquatic Plants, Floating Plants
.Climate: Equatorial, Subtropical, Tropical
.Origin: Central America, North America, South America
.Height: 0.1 to 0.3 meters
.Luminosity: Full Sun
.Life Cycle: Perennial
An aquatic and floating plant, the Water Hyacinth ( Aguapé) is very ornamental. However in some situations of overpopulation it can become a problem in lakes. With round, large and shiny leaves, the Water hyacinth multiplies quickly. Its inflorescence composed of beautiful purplish blue flowers resembles that of the hyacinth.
In landscaping, the Water hyacinth is used to populate lakes and water mirrors, favoring aquatic life, especially fish. It should be grown in full sun in naturally fertile, pH-corrected water.
The species originates from freshwater bodies in the warm tropical regions of South America, with a natural distribution in the Amazon and Rio de la Plata basins. It is used in phytoremediation and as a medicinal plant, soil fertilizer and ornamental plant, although it is considered a dangerous invasive species in tropical and subtropical regions.
It is considered one of the fastest growing plants known, in most cases reproducing vegetatively through stolons that are released from the mother plant. In Southeast Asia, cases were reported in which the population spread 2 to 5 m per day. There are data known to indicate that, in optimal situations, the number of plants doubles every two weeks. The invasive capacity of the species derives in large part from its ability to self-clone, producing large floating masses of plants all with the same genetic makeup.
The species tolerates air and water temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 35 °C, but does not grow below 12 °C or above 33-35 °C.
It is naturalized in vast areas of tropical and subtropical regions on all continents and is included in the list of the 100 most dangerous invasive alien species in the world published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Despite this, it can be used in phytoremediation operations, being one of the most studied species for this purpose due to its purifying characteristics and ease of proliferation. As the species obtains from the water all the nutrients it requires for its metabolism, as nitrogen and phosphorus, together with potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, ammonium, nitrite, sulfate, chlorine, phosphate and carbonate ions, which are the more important.
It has a root system, which may have associated microorganisms, which favors the purifying action of the plant.
In general, these plants are capable of retaining in their tissues a wide variety of heavy metals, including cadmium, mercury and arsenic. The mechanism of retention of these ions is based on the formation of complexes between the heavy metal and the amino acids present in the cells.
