Phinéas & Joe [Custom by G&M]

Well , this is either Phineas or Phileas - I have seen him called both names, he stands on the bridgewalk of the King Harry Ferry , a chain ferry crossing the River Fal south of Truro where the crossing goes from the road by Trelissick Gardens over to the Roseland Peninsula. On the slipway his mate Fogg naps away the day keeping an eye on the ferry ( we may meet Fogg another day ). Our friend here though has been here for quite a few years .

He has been up here for many a year going back and forth from one side to the other of the River Fal , think he might be getting a bit weather worn judging by his jumper - and of course the cobwebs around his head !! ( look large and you will see ) .

If you check the first comment box you can see a front view of him up on the bridge-walk looking down on some of the vehicles on the ferry !!

(Gene observes): Phineas had soaked & brushed his hair for the occasion. This gave his head a sleek look, which was contradicted by the surprised, honest expression (that) he wore on his face. His ears, I had never noticed before, were fairly small & set close to his head, & combined with his plastered hair they now gave his bold nose & cheekbones the sharp look of a prow.

~ John Knowles, "A Separate Peace," p. 26.

The red of the Tricolore (fraternite) frames this capture--& underlies the theme running through the brief series on Gene, Phineas, & "A Separate Peace." Kieslowski's extraordinary meditation (Trilogie: Bleu, Blanc, Rouge) throws into broad relief the vast interconnectedness of all life--& the sometimes tragic circumstances of shared experience (A Separate Peace). Fraternite: All sentient life has inherent value & is interconnected.

Phineas is getting along pretty good, having a nice visit, finally settling down.

Great Great Uncle Phineas J. Peg and the crew of Marie Laveau's Revenge were the scourge of the Mississippi River between Vicksburg and New Orleans for over a decade. Phineas was reputed to be a smuggler of raw sugar cane, fresh medical cadavers and Pomeranian accessory canines.

After losing a leg to a cannon blast on Lake Pontchartrain, Phineas stole a table leg from a Gonzales Tavern to fashion into a peg leg. He coated the new appendage with carpet nails and fish hooks. He was known to remove the leg and brandish it at approaching vessels on the water.

New Orleans court records show that Phineas J. Peg was sentenced to death by hanging along with the rest of the Marie Laveau's Revenge crew in 1891. The official charge was piracy. Escape was unlikely, but strangely there are no records of the actual hanging, and a marriage certificate circa 1893 from San Antonio Texas shows a Phineas J Peg and a Maggie Ruth Goldhirsch tying the knot.

Phineas G Gruffin

Phineas G Gruffin disguised himself as a sheepherder on the Scottish Moors. He sang these awful songs in a loud booming voice When there was a fog his awful voice would actually sound better the closer he was approached. He sang to cover up the sound of the shoveling as he dug for “scumpers”, small mole-like animals who cultivated golden truffles. The golden truffles were a delicacy he could not resist.

**Update, July 2016. Phineas has left the building! On June 23, 2016 we took Phineas Gage to the Warren Anatomical museum in Boston where he will be reunited with his skull and tamping iron. Although we have enjoyed our 40+ years as his custodians we believe he is so important to the history of medicine that he is better in their care.

December 2009 - The January issue of the Smithsonian Magazine has an article on our Gage daguerreotype.

Thank you, Michael Spurlock for looking at an image that has been looked at by many, many people and seeing the possibilities that no one else saw! Thank you also for the comment you posted in December, 2008. It continues to be an exciting journey.

* Note that I have added a statement at the end of this description about usage.

The daguerreotype above is making a return visit to flickr after an absence of more than six months. It was first posted in December 2007 when I was a new flickr user. The title then was "Daguerreotype - One Eyed Man with Harpoon" which was what we thought it was when we acquired it over 30 years ago. There was some discussion with members of the Whaling group about the identification of the rod he is holding. It was decided that it was not likely a harpoon. What was it?

In December 2008 there was a post that sent us off in a new direction. A flickr member posted a comment "maybe you found a photo of Phineas Gage? If so, it would be the only one known." A quick Google introduced us to the bizarre life of Phineas Gage and we were hooked.

Over the last six months we have read, researched, made road trips, and contacts we never dreamed of. We have been to the Warren Anatomical Museum at the Harvard Medical School in Boston to see Gage's life mask, skull, and tamping iron. We have been to Cavendish, VT where Gage met with his fateful accident. We have corresponded and collaborated with the world's leading authority on Gage. Amazingly we have also written an article that will be published in the Journal of the History of the Neurosciences in August, 2009. We also have posted a web site Meet Phineas Gage.

If you do not know the story of Gage, his accident, and his place in medical history, we suggest to Google his name or check out the links page on our site.

We are amazed at the ability of the internet to share information. If we had not posted this image on flickr for a sharp eyed member to see, we would still be calling this "The Whaler" holding a harpoon. Thanks to flickr and to Michael Spurlock.

He found a red leaf in the gardens at Borde Hill this afternoon and was quite taken with the colour. Luckily, there was no-one around when I took this because Phineas is easily embarrassed. Er, that goes for me too ... although, doesn't everyone my age take photos of miniature robots in public places? :)

Finally! I've wanted to make this set of five back in July, but I decided to wait until the launch of Candace Against the Universe on Disney+ in August. Of course, I had to delay them due to a rush of life-related things, but they're finally done! Now then, Phineas and Ferb is a show I've grown up, so when I learned about this new movie, I thought it would be a good opportunity to make the main cast in LEGO form!

Theme Song!

"There's thirty-one days of the Iron Builder

Till Nannan and Guy come to end it

So the monthly problem, for our generation

Is findin' a good way to win it

LIKE MAYBE!

Building a platter or fighting a monster

Or climbing lady liberty

Discovering something that doesn't exist

Or giving Oscar a shower!

Surfing tidal waves, creating sushi-bots

n'Locamoting to the West Wing ("It's over here!")

Finding some mini food, painting a tribal man

Or driving the brothers insane

As you can see, there's a whole lot of stuff to build

Before we end this fall ("Come on Perry")

So stick with us 'cuz Siercon and Coral are gonna win it all

So stick with us 'cuz Siercon and Coral are gonna win it all

("Ericksons!")

MO~M! Siercon and Coral are getting an IB title sequel!"

This build was made for the Iron Builder against the Erickson brothers, and used the green spike as grass in most of the lawn and as Ferb's hair

It is the Age of Steam - Since the "incident" Apple Pie has not tasted quite so sweet.

Phineas.Taylor. Barnum (Center)

Showman, Confidence Trickster and now Gun for Hire. Following the incident He's taken the remnants of his crew and hit the trail. Travelling across the Weird West in his Bullet Train Locomotive, The Carmevil act as troubleshooters (literally) working jobs for the highest bidders. His disarming smile and pleasant nature belie the black soul that lurks within him.

Here we see him pictured with his most trusted lieutenants.

Mental Ben

The former dancing bear. After the incident he would no longer dance and became subject to fits of rage. His restraining collar works (most of the time) but if not Ernie is on hand to point his anger in the right direction.

Ernie the Bear Wrangler

In happier times Ernie used to collect money in his cap as his bear and best friend Ben danced and frolicked. Since the "incident" Ernie now just directs "Mental Ben's" rage as Mr Barnum directs him. It's not an entirely safe job hence his barbed staff and protective glove. It pains him to hurt Ben but it's for his own good (as if he doesn't do as he is told neither of them will eat).

The Great Zybsko

The Carnival's Strong Man. As well as being a first rate entertainer Zybsko would also be responsible for pulling up and taking down the Big Top. Now with the tent a burnt mass of canvas and twisted poles, Zybsko tears apart people instead. His massive weights are a deadly club and his hands wreak terrible destruction on feeble flesh and bone.

Mr Sparkles The Clown

Previously Mr Sparkles was part of a world famous double act.The death of Rainbow his twin was almost too much to bear for him. The day Rainbow died in "the incident" Mr Sparkles lost his sparkle. He threw down his red nose and swapped his jolly green and bright blue grease paint for the drab black and white of the mime. His tears have left it smudged and cracked.

Here you can see him wielding a custard pie in one hand and is that Jam on his knife?

There's nothing funny about this clown...

The Real Phineas Taylor Barnum was quite a character. take a minute to read up on him!

As a side note I'm hoping to build the "Bullet Train" with some expert guidance from Mr Michael Gale. Check out his uber realistic and detailed lego trains here;

www.flickr.com/photos/michaelgale/ He's a top fella with some top notch trainhead skills.

Well, at least displeased.
