The statue busts are of Euripides, Sophocles and Aeschylus.

Philosophe au livre ouvert (Philosopher with an Open Book), by Dutch painter Salomon de Koninck, executed circa 1640–1650, on display in Salle 844 of the Richelieu Wing.

This oil on oak panel depicts a contemplative scholar seated in a vaulted interior, bathed in soft window light as he studies a large open book. A spiral staircase ascends dramatically to the left, lending spatial complexity and symbolic depth—perhaps representing the ascent of knowledge or spiritual enlightenment. Though long attributed to Rembrandt and conceived as a pendant to his Philosophe en contemplation (1632), now identified as INV. 1740, this painting is now recognized as a refined homage by Koninck, a follower of Rembrandt known for genre scenes featuring learned men. The Louvre’s version may have been enlarged to complement the Rembrandt work in the 18th century, when both hung in prominent French collections and were engraved as a pair. Acquired by Louis XVI in 1784 from the collection of the Comte de Vaudreuil, it entered the national collection at the founding of the Muséum in 1793.

The Louvre is the world’s most visited museum and one of its largest, housing over 35,000 works of art from prehistory to the 19th century. Originally built as a fortress under Philippe Auguste in the late 12th century, it was transformed into a royal palace and later into a public museum during the French Revolution in 1793. Its collections span eight departments, including Egyptian antiquities, Greek and Roman art, Islamic art, sculpture, decorative arts, paintings, prints, and drawings. The museum is organized across three wings—Denon, Sully, and Richelieu—surrounding the Cour Napoléon. The modern glass Pyramid entrance, designed by architect I. M. Pei and inaugurated in 1989, unifies the historic palace complex while serving as a symbol of the museum’s global identity.

The Bedroom Philosopher at The Toff In Town

Philosopher falls walk, Waratah, Tasmania

Is there anybody out there ...

TV remote - I don't watch too much tv, but I do like the Music Choice channels we have; the new Stephen King book - Duma Key - I haven't started reading it yet; and my knitting. This is a sweater sleeve in the Spring colorway of Philosopher's wool. I love how fast these knit up!

The Philosopher's Walk is a popular pedestrian path alongside a Kyoto canal lined with cherry trees. It is so-called because an influential 20th century philosopher named Nishida Kitaro is said to have used it for daily meditation. I was actually just about to discover the meaning of life when startled by this flashbulb back to square one.

Travel to NOLA - February 2024 - Krewe of Muses

Organized in 2000, the Krewe of Muses is named after the legendary daughters of Zeus. In Greek mythology, muses were patrons of the arts and sciences, as well as sources of inspiration for artists, poets, philosophers, and musicians.

The parade has become one of Mardi Gras' favorites, thanks to its humorous and biting parade themes. Each year, in addition to their year-long philanthropic works, the Muses host a design contest for students in the area. The winner rides as a guest of the krewe and his or her design is turned into a throw cup!

In addition to allowing students to design their throw cup logos, they also have had children design their masks. Now those duties have been passed along to adults, such as senior citizens and other adults in rehabilitative environments that may have not been able to participate in the parade as parade goers.

Year founded: 2000

Membership: 1118 female riders

Number of floats: 26 floats

Signature throw: hand decorated high-heeled shoes

Hey Peter, I listened and had fun with it.

Didn´t build anything this evening. Instead I went with my old high-school-buddy Leifur to Pipes of Scotland for an afterwork chat. He had the Belgian FORTE-ale (quadruppel) Three Philosophers...more wine than ale, I´d say!
