Last night’s plan was to head to the city to take photos of the newly risen Strawberry Moon above the skyscrapers of Center City. So you’ve heard the other one about the best-laid plans, right? Yeah. Me and Murphy? We’re good friends. But I digress…

I decided to try a different spot rather than head to my tried and true spot on the South Street Bridge. So we made our way to behind the art museum and waited for the moon to rise above the art museum and skyscrapers. I figured I’d shoot a few shots of Boathouse Row at twilight while I waited for the moon to rise. It’s here that I realized my remote trigger shutter release was at home rather than in my bag, where I’d assumed I’d left it after my May 20th Philadelphia fountain shots. Turns out I actually did put it away and it was safely at home in my camera bag, which for me spelled disaster. My tripod is old and crappy, it was crappy when I bought it 9 yeas ago and crappy doesn’t age well, and my hands aren’t the most steady you’ve ever seen. So all of my nighttime and long exposure images require that simple, little, beautiful device. I tried all the tricks I’ve read about; setting the self timer, holding the tripod as still as possible, trying not to move too much myself and I did finally get a few photos out of last night’s excursion; they weren’t the ones I set out to take and I’m still a little disappointed about last night’s failure, but these few shots take some of the sting out of the disappointment.
