Halo is the name for a family of optical phenomena produced by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.

Halos can have many forms, ranging from colored or white rings to arcs and spots in the sky. Many of these are near the Sun or Moon, but others occur elsewhere or even in the opposite part of the sky.

The ice crystals responsible for halos are typically suspended in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds high (5–10 km, or 3–6 miles) in the upper troposphere, but in cold weather they can also float near the ground, in which case they are referred to as diamond dust.

The particular shape and orientation of the crystals are responsible for the type of halo observed. Light is reflected and refracted by the ice crystals and may split up into colors because of dispersion. The crystals behave like prisms and mirrors, refracting and reflecting light between their faces, sending shafts of light in particular directions.

During summer in the northern part of the world, the sun is up all night long – the phenomenon is best known as midnight sun.

The aurora borealis (scientifically aurora borealis as northern lights in the northern hemisphere and aurora australis as southern lights in the southern hemisphere) is a luminous phenomenon caused by excited nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the high atmosphere, i.e. an electrometeor. Auroras are mostly seen in bands of about 3 to 6 degrees of latitude near the magnetic poles. They are caused by energetic charged particles interacting with the Earth's magnetic field. The glow in the sky is caused by these particles hitting the earth's atmosphere in the polar regions.

If auroras are seen, you can be woken up in the middle of the night on the ship if you want. The challenge is then to take pictures. Long exposure on a moving ship, with running engines causing vibrations.

While waiting for the sunset I've got into this curious phenomenon. The clouds were turning around and gathering on the summit of this mountain. The final effect was seeming an erupting volcano. Why not dedicate a shot to it. I love the clouds!

Diamond Fuji is a phenomenon in which the sun appears like a diamond when it overlaps the top of Mt. Fuji.

The fog phenomenon

During autumn and winter, parts of the northern Alpine valleys, as well as the villages and cities of the low areas of the Mittelland, experience a climatic phenomenon in the form of a lowland fog. This occurs when the stable, high-pressure weather conditions prevail over central Europe and the Alps and create cold air masses. This results in a blanket of fog that can cover the areas for days or even weeks.

Meanwhile, towns perched high up in the Alps get to enjoy warm weather due to an inversion. This occurs when the air above the fog line is warmer than the air below. For this reason, Switzerland’s high-altitude resorts are extremely popular destinations come wintertime. (this info was copied from EXPATICA )

On the whole, the "stau" (queue) from the South, that is the ascent of progressively wetter and colder currents from valley to mountain, which produced this elongated and curled cloud, never exceeded that position throughout the all day, leaving, to the North, the completely clear sky, in the consequential phase of the fall of these currents from the chain towards the Austrian valleys on the opposite side; that is the reverse phenomenon of the "stau", called "Foehn" (or a "sort of Foehn", that is the descent of increasingly drier and milder currents from mountain to valley, the end of the queue...).

The Fairy Pools are a natural waterfall phenomenon in Glen Brittle on the Isle of Skye. The vivid blues and greens of the pools suggest an unnatural origin. They are a popular place for wild swimmers.

The habitat of the Fairy Pools hosts a variety of animals, such as red deer, rabbits, and sheep. The area is also host to a large number of birds. Large flocks of crows, ravens, and gulls are present in the area, as well as such smaller birds as meadow pipits, turnstones, common ringed plovers, grey herons, dunlins, and curlews. The physical landscape is predominately rocky, with some boggy areas here and there. The water in the area is typically cold.

The Fairy Pools are a popular location for walkers. It is about a 20 minute walk to the Fairy Pools from the Glen Brittle car park.

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

According to Wikipedia, "glory is an optical phenomenon, resembling an iconic saint's halo around the shadow of the observer's head, caused by sunlight or (more rarely) moonlight interacting with the tiny water droplets that compose mist or clouds."

This strange phenomenon of frozen, snow covered trees occurs in winter when temperatures range from -40 degrees to -50 degrees Celsius usually seen at the top of the mountain.

I say mystical, but in all honesty, the only thing mystical about this tree is that a shepherds fence post became an international phenomenon. Perhaps the sheer beauty of the South Island of New Zealand contributed to the mystique.

The natural phenomenon - not a correction in PS

Saw this while walking my dog Kicks early in the evening a few weeks back. Very strange ...

An upside down rainbow which belongs to the halo family of weather optical phenomenon. It is made up of ice crystals on Cirrus clouds. There is lots of technical data that go with these, but I will let you look it all up!

As the sun rose, a light pillar appeared, a phenomenon created by the reflection of light from tiny ice crystals that were suspended in the atmosphere.

If you compare this with the last photo that I posted, "Carving In The Sky" (taken 14 minutes earlier), you shall see the sky looked completely different. The sweeping wind and rising sun constantly doing a great job to shape and reshape our early morning sky.

Note: The center of this photo was where my "signature" was in the last photo.

Wishing you a very happy Friday!!!

These sea urchins started popping up in Kalymnos around 2019.

Driving home this evening I noticed that we had some Sun dogs, an atmospheric optical phenomenon with bright rainbow spots on either side of the sun. When I got home I changed lens but wasn't able to get the sun dogs, but you can see the 22 degree halo around the sun that comes with the Sun dogs.

Now I see her, I see her as I saw the ghosts on the stairs escaping from the corner of my eyes....

Ok, so I was out by the edge of the woods taking some night shots when I heard this strange rustling buzzing sound.

What could that be ?.. So I put my Nikon onto the tripod and set it for 30 seconds.... . . . . . . . POW! all of these lights come streaming from within the deep woods and across my shot !!

Super bright and moving at lighting speed. Gone in a second.

Three of them came straight at me and the camera then turned.

They lit up the trees they had been in and came straight at me!!!!

....................

It would appear that I had disturbed some creatures which had been resting in the trees. I have no explanation ?????

OK - OK == I had set up a 30 second exposure shot of this forest and then for some strange reason in the middle of the 30 seconds turned the camera around 180* to set up for my next shot of a parking lot behind me. Voilà - when I downloaded my roll the aliens came in through my window and used lasers to warm up my tea.

The phenomenon used to be called "Beer Goggles" - the more you drink, the later it gets, the fewer choices you have, the lower your personal standards of what you will attempt . . .

Hessdalen in Norway is know for the many UFO-observations that have been made here over a long period of time. International researcers have been interested in the phenomenon, but have not yet found a good explanation for what is happening here.

I shot this video last year. This is a screenshot from my video. The sun was setting after a storm and I saw a beautiful rainbow that caught my eye. I didn't notice when I was recording, but there where some flying objects that were moving in speeds that I have never seen. They came to a stop as if they were admiring the beauty of what caught my eye. I saw them shooting across the clouds like shooting stars except they were changing their directions and stopping. There was a total of 9 that I counted in my video that I had to slow down to see them all.

I ran to my room to get my 600mm lens and camera, and by the time I got back they were gone. This wasn't my first encounter, and I believe it won't be my last. Just wanted to share this with whoever is interested in these kind of phenomenon. If you've had any experiences like this please share. I haven't looked into it, but I'm curious why they were watching the rainbow. I've heard that they use storms to recharge their aircrafts.

Here I am about 20 linear km north-east of Trieste and at an altitude of 870m on the Mount Vremščica ridge-plateau (the summit is 1026m a.s.l., while in front you can see the soft Slatina pre-peak, 929m a.s.l.),

Vremščica divides the Coastal Karst (Primorska in Slovenija and Trieste Karst in Italia) from the Internal Karst-Dinaric Region (Notranjska, Slovenija).

On this Karst moor (gmajna) it rained in the afternoon and now the weather is more stable.

With the sun hidden, isolated patches of fog form from saturation of the water vapor due to the cooling of the ground.

Radiation fog is an opposite phenomenon to the one that is developing (in the sky) in the direction of Ljubljana, where, unlike here, the previous sunshine has overheated the ground activating updrafts and the formation of towering clouds with a heavy thunderstorm forming.

I have never really seen a perihelion/ sun dog quite like this one, most seem to look like a wide angle lens flare effect, but this one has a very pronounced second sun, I guess caused by ice crystals formed in the clouds to the left : )

Reports of the abduction phenomenon have been made all around the world, but are most common in English-speaking countries, especially the United States.[3] The first alleged alien abduction claim to be widely publicized was the Betty and Barney Hill abduction in 1961.

We passed by Storvatnet lake on our way to Nusfjord on the Lofoten islands and noticed these utterly strange ice formations in the making which were light green of colour and wrapped like a beautiful veil. No idea what kind of weather or physical phenomenon can cause thise but I am sure I have never before seen anything like it. Any explanation anyone??

Another hard disk find:

In the afternoon we experienced very different clouds at the high Rainbow Point/Bryce Canyon.

Here and there a sunspot came through and grazed the landscape. The result was a few minutes in the distance, a light phenomenon: not the sun's rays led to beams but the reflection of the light from the illuminated rocks against the dark sky.
