While 3C 273 is considered the closest quasar (QSO), PG 1634+706 is considered the most distant object in the Universe visible with an amateur telescope. This QSO, located in the constellation Draco, has a magnitude ranging from 14.2 to 14.7, making it comparable in brightness to Pluto.

This object's redshift z is 1.337, making it a medium-distance quasar. This means that PG 1634+706 is approximately 8.9 billion light-years away. Its light is twice the age of our solar system. The light has traveled for almost 9 billion years to reach us, but due to expansion, the object is now at a "comovent" distance of approximately 13.6 billion light-years.

The quasar's designation (PG) stands for Palomar Green (Bright Quasar Survey), but it is reported under many other names based on the catalogs, for example, QSO B1634+7037.

Photographically, there are much more distant objects (see, for example, other posts), but knowing that you can visually observe (under excellent sky conditions) such a distant object is astonishing. Alternatively, PG 1634+706 can be imaged with a few minutes of exposure, even with a good telephoto lens.
