My small efforts for giving pets a park they need – An initiative to give pets an enjoyable place they deserve
In India there are very few places where we can take our pets and they can have unrestricted access and a place to play and enjoy themselves. We wanted to create a space which would provide a good space, proper facilities and which was also properly maintained.
Challenge 1: Finding an open space where no one gets disturbed by the barking of the dogs
Unfortunately despite many repeated attempts it took us ages to finalise a spot. We reviewed party plots, roadside eateries and even dance plots out of desperation, but finally we stumbled upon something interesting. One of my contacts sent me the location; it was a big party plot. I went there but I felt that it was in desperate need of a makeover.
Challenge 2: Need of money and revamping the place to make it pet friendly
We got together and started working on revamping the place. We required a bridge, an A-frame tunnel, a close tunnel and ride, but none of the industrial manufacturers we contacted were ready to help us out. All my finances were locked into this place and I had borrowed money from many of my contacts, so we all decided to work on building up the place by ourselves and somehow at the end of four days completed it.
Challenge 3: Spreading the word
I began with organising dog meets at the place, but they were unsuccessful as in the beginning only 1 or 2 people attended the events. Over a period of time through word of mouth publicity, we finally managed to hold successful events with a high attendance rate.
Success!!!! Today we run a successful dog lovers club in Ahmedabad and also have an awareness program that focuses basically on young children. We feed many strays given the current situation and have an active adoption centre where abandoned dogs find loving homes. I am extremely happy with the decision I took back then because of which today I am able to help our furry friends all over the place.
