The back road to Petra is unknown to most tourists.
Tras subir 800 peldaños excavados en la piedra se llega a la explanada donde se encuentra el llamado Monasterio (Deir), construido por los nabateos en el siglo I. Petra es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 1985.

Little Petra , al-batrā aṣ-ṣaġïra), also known as Siq al-Barid (Arabic: literally "the cold canyon") is an archaeological site located north of Petra and the town of Wadi Musa in the Ma'an Governorate of Jordan. Like Petra, it is a Nabataean site, with buildings carved into the walls of the sandstone canyons. As its name suggests, it is much smaller, consisting of three wider open areas connected by a 450-metre (1,480 ft) canyon. It is part of the Petra Archeological Park, though accessed separately, and included in Petra's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Like Petra, it was probably built during the height of Nabataean influence during the 1st century C.E. While the purpose of some of the buildings is not clear, archaeologists believe that the whole complex was a suburb of Petra, the Nabatean capital, meant to house visiting traders on the Silk Road. After the decline of the Nabataeans, it fell vacant, used only by Bedouin nomads, for centuries. From Wikipedia, the free.
It is generally accepted in research today that the monumental building known as the "Great Temple" did not serve religious worship, but was built as a representative royal reception hall. Discussions continue as to whether it could have been part of the royal palace, but the residential quarter right next to it is too small for that, and associated functional buildings (kitchen, stables, etc.) are missing. The previous designation "Great Temple" (origin of the name) is still in use, although now often in quotation marks or with the addition of "so-called". Occasionally, "South Building" (south of the Wadi Musa) may be found as well.
In the last quarter of the 1st century BC, as part of the monumental development of the center of Petra, the Nabataeans cut terraces deep into the bedrock of the Katute hill and laid out flat areas, traversed by channels for the drainage of rainwater. On this slope they constructed in several phases this largest freestanding architectural complex in Petra, a structure of 7560 m2 of floor space on three levels, the highest of which rises 25 m above the Colonnaded Street.

Petra By Night is a special occasion to experience the majesty of one of Jordan‘s crown jewels as lit by hundreds of luminaries after the sunset.
The event is run only a few nights a week and includes classic Bedouin folk music and storytelling. After winding down the Siq, with its hundred foot high cliffs and narrow passage, visitors emerge to a grand scene in front of the Treasury.

On the Way to Petra
Petra is a historic city in Jordan. Ancient Greek Πέτρα, "rock," was the name of the capital of the Nabataeans. The Nabataeans themselves called the city Raqmu "the red, the pink." The site is a World Heritage Site and is situated in a valley in the hills. It is best known for its rock-cut tombs. Almost all the buildings that once stood there are now ruins.
The heyday of the place is due to the frankincense trade route from Yemen , 1600 km further south, to Persia , Syria and the Greek and Roman empires. Petra was also a hub for other trade routes. The tax revenues from the traders made the rulers of Petra extremely wealthy and this can be seen in the luxurious buildings and grave monuments. An estimated 25,000 people lived in Petra around the beginning of the common era

Church of Petra Lesvos
"Church of Petra (Panagia Glykofiloussa: Sweetkissing Madonna) is built on a rock in the center of the picturesque village of Petra, and it needs 114 steps to reach. It is a marvel of architectural beauty, cultural significance, and spiritual importance. Built in the 18th century, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and it has been a beacon of hope and healing for locals and visitors alike for generations."

Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Petra, originally known to the Nabataeans as Raqmu, is a historical and archaeological city in southern Jordan. The city is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Arab Nabataeans. The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who took advantage of Petra's proximity to regional trade routes to establish it as a major trading hub. The Nabataeans are also known for their great ability in constructing efficient water-collecting methods in the barren deserts and their talent in carving structures into solid rocks. Petra lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.
