‘It is extremely difficult to explain in words or in writing the exact fascination exerted by a large, fast car such as the one so skilfully represented by the Bentley Speed model.’ The Autocar on the Bentley Speed Six, 5 September 1930. The Bentley Speed Six Le Mans is undoubtedly one of the greatest cars of its era. Originally designed as a touring car to compete with the Rolls-Royce New Phantom, the Speed Six proved to be an incredible racing car: in 1929, Barnato/Birkin’s Speed Six won the 24 Hours of Le Mans... ahead of a trio of Bentley 4 ½ Litres, and Barnato/Kidston repeated the feat the following year...

 

Based in a small village in the heart of the Devon countryside in south-west England, Petersen Engineering has built a reputation both nationally and internationally for restoring, rebuilding and recreating Bentleys. The car featured on these pages was built around thirty years ago using parts sourced from Petersen’s production line. It uses a modified Bentley R-Type chassis and a 4.9-litre S1 engine. With its very light Le Mans-inspired body and ‘modern’ running gear, it offers incredible driving pleasure for a car with the look of the iconic 1920s Bentley...

 

Its current owner, who has owned it for over 20 years, has taken part in a large number of rallies at the wheel, not hesitating to set off on journeys of several thousand kilometres ‘by road’. Kuala Lumpur – Hanoi, Liège – Rome, Tour of the Baltic and Tour of Sicily: the car has never encountered the slightest problem, always bringing its crew safely to their destination, under the supervision of the renowned Dutch Bentley specialist Belrose. A car ready to take on the most gruelling and difficult rallies of its kind, including Beijing-Paris...
