And finally the train arrives and swings into the glorious afternoon light at Petersen. The Chugach Mountains really stand out at this location and as I said in the first post is worth a visit from all visiting Railfans.
The same train pictured in my last post just a few miles up the road at Petersen. This is a first time for me catching Geeps at this location.
Built 1969 in Wiltshire England (powered by a mid-mounted Austin 1800 engine), the Adams Brothers Probe-16 was featured in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange.
Renewal. The Schwanenstein is a remarkable triangular glacial sculpture. This stone lies on the northern shore of the Jasmund peninsula (Germany) about 20 metres off the beach in the Baltic Sea. Like many other glacial erratics, the Schwanenstein is linked to several legends and stories. With the ice on the stone it easily reminds of a sad incident which occurred on 13 February 1956, when some children were playing near the shore on the frozen Sea. The weather changed suddenly, a storm whipped up and broke the ice. Three boys saved themselves on the Schwanenstein. As the wind increased in strength, becoming a hurricane, a frantic rescue operation was launched. Local fishermen, a fishing boat from Sassnitz and border guards tried to save the children, but storm surge wrecked all their efforts. Rescue teams from outside, for example, an engineer platoon of the Volkspolizei from Prora, got stuck in the metre-high snowdrifts. Only the next morning, when the weather had calmed, could the bodies of the three boys, Helmut Petersen, Uwe Wassilowsky and Manfred Prewitz, be recovered from the Schwanenstein.

I have shot this location a number of times. I usually prefer to shoot from higher ground to show the train, however with all of the Hooligan fisherman lining the highway I opted to shoot a bit lower to try to eliminate as many cars as possible. Couldn't get them all but most of them. The Whittier freight is northbound at Petersen.

This vicla was built by Donald Montoya and Mark Lujan at their Albuquerque shop, La Vida Customs. The motorcycle is raked from head to tail, with elevated beach-cruiser handlebars, a headlight from a 1938 Chevrolet car, and a front wheel that fits up in the headlamp shell. Montoya describes his customizing as “rasquache”—a Chicano art philosophy based on using any available materials. The mural of La Virgen de Guadalupe by El Moises puts a lowrider spin on traditional Catholic imagery with Cholo angels and blue roses. (Source: Petersen Automotive Museum)

Car owned by the Keller Collection (mostly Alfas), which is part of a Northern California Winery. The collection is housed in a Museum at the winery but unfortunately the public isn't allowed in to see the cars except under special circumstances. However the owner does occasionally allow one car to be displayed on the winery tour.
Other factoids about Keller include this little gem: No cameras are allowed!
So how did I get my shots? It was on loan to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and the Pete has a little more liberal view of photography rules.

As a nod to the past for the Alaska Railroad's Centennial Celebration the Alaska Railroad wrapped SD70MAC 4328 in a special scheme. Reminiscent of a 1950s scheme with a few modifications for the Centennial. All in all this unit has been a big hit and adds Alaska Railroad to railroads with special schemes. After returning from the celebration the 4328 was assigned to the Coastal Classic between Anchorage & Seward. Seen here at Petersen in the Vertical format.

Located in Oak Park, Illinois, Petersen's Ice Cream Parlor and Sweet Shoppe has been a fixture since 1919 selling ice cream in a dozen or so forms, including cones, sundaes, malts, shakes, floats, cakes and pies, both over the counter and catered. Decided to do a stylized version of their outdoor sign :-)
